Update on the restoration

Status on the restoration

I went to the workshop yesterday. The vehicle has been completely stripped. The engine, gearbox, Transfer case opened up. There was water in the gearbox when it was opened up. The front and rear differentials will be opened in a couple of days time.
  • The engine head is in a good shape. The vehicle was overhauled in May2006 and the a new engine head was added new back then. Will be adding new pistons & sleeves.
  • The fuel pump has been sent to the company for service & repair if any.
  • The gearbox has been opened up and all parts that even appear to be faulty or worn will be bought new and replaced.
  • The complete wiring will be changed.
  • I have decided to keep the leaf spring suspension as of now. Will be changing all the shocks absorbers.
  • Will not be getting it re-painted at present but would just put a cheap single coat of dark green paint to hide the army markings. A year or so later I would be getting a good paint job. As the body shell has been removed I would be getting anti rust treatment for the entire under body shell.
  • The chassis has small small cracks at two places. This is where the engine is mounted. The chassis will be washed with diesel and whatever the fault it will be repaired and reinforced.
  • Power steering and maybe a tilt steering if we find one. The rubicon copy at the workshop has a tilt steering in it.
  • Conversion of rear axles to full floating and LSD in the front. these will be bought from mayapuri and we might get it cheap.
In about a week, my cousin will be able to give a a final estimate on the mechanical costs of the vehicle. Once I have that then I would start working on the cosmetic job for the XD.

Will keep this thread updated on the restoration.

Hi Harjeev,

Good to see that your jeep work is going on in full swing.

There's a jeep which has willy's on the grill in one of your pics, was that a cj3B and now modified into an AM151A2? If it was then the guys has done a real good job modifying it.

Here are a pics of an original AM151A2.

Keep us post on the progress.

Cheers !!!!!

Hi Harjeev,

nice to know the work in progress...

Any plan of lifting ? Why don't do a SOA (Spring Over Axle) lifting. It will looks the jeep more muscular and will get more ground clearance

Hi Randeep,

A same model jeep AM151A2 was lying on the road side here in Riyadh near to my flat for almost an year with some mods like Alloy wheels and steel roll over cage, etc. It has got an indepentent coil sprint suspenstion (stock).

Also I has seen an ad of the same kind of jeep (5 pieces) on sale in Saudi's Tabuk military base. That means the Saudi Military is still using the same jeep!

Sali,

I guess they could have been using those jeeps as even in the U.S the AM151A2 was replaced only when the Hummer H1 was introduced.

If i'm not mistaken the AM151A2 has independent suspension in the front and rear.

A very good jeep indeed.

@randeep
That is not a CJ3B but a 1940's WILLYS. I would have to confirm the year, but its definitely not a CJ3B and yes the complete modification and fabrication of the vehicle has been done at my cousins workshop.

Next time I will be going there would definitely let you know and we can then plan together.
please also PM me your email id. I will send you the link that we talked about.

Hi Salikt.
I am not doing the SOA currently as it would cost a lot. Also I think that putting springs it would not increase the ground clearance GC. the ride quality would certainly get better, but I think that as the springs are put between the chassis and the axels the level of the axels/ diffs from the ground remains the same. The simplest ways of increasing the GC would be to buy taller tyres.

P.S. I am just a novice here and whatever I say is to the best of my limited knowledge. Maybe the experienced gurus can comment better here. If i am wrong think of it as a novice mistake and correct me

This is just a rough idea maybe it will help

PS.I found a Hatari jeep tucked away in a Ford showroom in Indore. Will paste the photo subsequently.
@sunny - Where are you putting up in Noida? I ask you because I have bases in 29(in-laws) and 37(fathers) sectors.

There is this kansa village in GNoida. From the big round about at the end of Noida-->GNoida expressway take a right turn and about 8-10 Kms on that road.
I will be heading there tomm or day after to check on the progress. They will be assembling the gearbox.

You are right. Its not a MUTT. It was originally a LHD Willys owned by my cousin.
The parts (bonnet, fender, grill, etc) have been fabricated at his workshop only. Also the conversion from LHD to RHD was donw by him.

Update on the restoration "Gearbox, transfercase and 4x4 put together"

Hey guys
I was at the workshop yesterday and the assembly of the Gearbox, Transfer Case & 4x4 is complete.
Please excuse me if I wrongly name any parts as I am only a novice and learning

All faulty were replaced with new ones.
Old parts were cleaned with diesel and then assembled.
The entire process took about 6 hours to complete.

The gear lever was faulty and just put on top when I bought the jeep, as a result when we tried to put it back, it dint fit. We tried using a another lever from a 540, which fit perfectly. Also discovered that the gearbox cover (which is visible from the inside) is not a part of the original assembly as it is different in color. This is the reason, I think, that there was water in the gearbox. Dint add oil but the gears were moving perfectly and had a good feel to it. The 4x4 lever was a little tight and not smooth while taking from 2H-->N-->4L or if I am wrong about the gears its RIGHT to LEFT and then UP. Pointed this out and he( the head mechanic) said that there is some bearing which is faulty and were not able to get it and will be added later and once this is done and oil is added it would become perfect.

All in all I am getting a good feeling the way the job is being done, but ultimately time will tell how good the job has actually been done.

I go on with blah blah blah and here are the pics
