Hi Feroz,

Congrats and happy to know that the work has been started!

From which garage you are doing the work? Is it in Calicut city or in your home place?

sadiq.

hi sadiq,

one of my relatives has a 90 model 540 4WD. He has a regular mechanic in calicut city who takes care of his jeep. Mine is also with him. I dont even know his name, but trust my relative. So it is in calicut city itself.

thx for all support.

FK, Happy overhauling. Hope you are keeping track of the other 550 restoration threads.

The forum is just being flooded with Ex Army 550s, I have lost track how many in the last 2-3 months.

I swear if I see one more thread on a 550 or 540 acquisition, I would not want to come back to the Off-Roading section for sometime. <Envy>

Feroz, good to see that your work is progressing well.

Though I am no expert, but am gaining a little experience on restoration. Please feel free to contact for any info/discussion and I will do the same.

Hi Feroz,
Its great feeling when your Jeep is under restoration and you feel like you are creating your own piece of art . I feel in the same way as my jeep is also under restoration.

more updates..

The job on the vehicle is progressing well now. Jobs done so far are

1. The entire chassis has been cleaned, scrubbed and tinkered. A base layer of green has then been applied.
2. All leafs have been recambered (if that is the right word) and sprung back up again.
3. All bolts are being changed and being replaced with new ones.
4. As you can see from the pictures, they have been put back to its place.

The work going on now are

1. The engine is currently being overhauled.
2. The tub is being checked for rust, patchwork and necessary jobs being done. After which a rust proof coating will be applied.
3. The brakes are being serviced and will be fixed soon.

The only parts not yet touched on the vehicle are the transmissions and the gearbox. Will be doing those soon.

Now let the pictures do the talking.

Hi FK,

Good improvement on the work!

Are you planning for a sand blast on body tub? Did you inquire that service is available around calicut?

sadiq..

Nice Restoration. You might want to take the Leaf Spring Limit Stops off, and get the paint off, as they will crack as they do not react well for thinner. Also polyurethene bushes in the leaf spring hangers will work well in our tropical weather. My 2cents.

Cheers

Hi Sadiq,

no plans to get the painting done as of now. So I have not enquired about the sand balsting. The painting will be done only in July when I go back to calicut.

BTW I was thinking of getting some kind of aluminium lining for the entire body. or maybe even get a permanent rubber lining. I dont have any pictures for this. Has anyone seen this? Any inputs regarding these types of aluminum or rubber lining so that the inside of the tub, the standing/ seating area is completely covered.

Is there any problems with this? I can only think of water seeping in and hence rust forming.

I would appreciate all your inputs on this matter.

Why not just get some aluminium flexi chequer plate or aluminium chequer plate footwell mats. I have seen a few land rover defenders with this stuff. I suppose if you really want to splash out you could get a large sheet and cover all the floor area of the tub. Remember aluminium can corrode as well. If done properly it smartens up the floor area but and I have seen people just run a water hose over it to clean it and then dry it properly using a cloth.

I take it you mean this type of :

Land Rover Series Chequer Plate - Floor Plate - NEARSIDE

They also put it on the exterior all though I have never seen the point apart from hiding rust.

hi all,

there has been significant progress in the vehicle rebuild. the work is coming along nicely.

Work done so far are since last update:

1. The entire chassis has been repainted.
2. New shocks installed.
3. All brakes serviced and fixed.
4. Engine overhauled and placed, but not yet started
5. Diesel tank fixed.
6. All transmissions checked and fixed
7. Gear box fixed. There was water in the gearbox!!!!
8. The underside of the tub has been rust proofed and painted.

in the next week, the tub will be mounted and the engine will be started, once the radiator is fixed.

i have had a smooth run so far, so i had to hit a snag. And i have. REGISTRATION!!!! i am having problems with registration, but i am getting it sorted out without any under table dealings. So its going to be a bit lengthy process.

Now pictures
