re: All Team-BHP 4x4 Jeep Pics!

I took this pic last winter before the virus lockdowns. This is a village/hydroelectric road between Dharamsala and Palampur H.P, starring my pretty good late 2018 Thar with Bimbra hardtop (very good so far). It's good just to be up high in the mountains breathing the air. Millions of pine trees produce pure oxygen and the winter air is clear, dry, about 7 degrees this day. There is a proposed business venture by a Delhi firm to import air from H.P. but H.P. folk "got wind" of it and are now hoarding air here and arming themselves. The fear is that Delhi types will try to swap H.P. air for the industrial sludge that Delhi-ites breathe. (My sympathies, Delhi-ites)

This Thar is a pretty good value-for-money mountain bad-roader and the very slight engine mods via Dhanushs get it up and down the slopes with decent performance. Probably unacceptable for pure off-roading, Thar's rack and pinion steering are just the ticket for bad-roading in the Big Hills. Fun!

re: All Team-BHP 4x4 Jeep Pics!

Years ago I walked away from the rat race. Mystic India, tough minded sadhus (Indian and Tibetan) and the glorious mountains beckoned to me since I was a small boy. So here I am. I took quarters in Dharamsala, H.P. with this literally over my N.E. fence. The big boy just to the left of the tower is "Moonpeak", 15,222 feet and just a foothill to what lies beyond. My 2018 Thar gets me up there better and safer than an Alto, for sure. Old village roads, goat paths, hydro-electric roads go up and up. Access is limited. Much of the terrain is too rugged for roads or too dangerous. I do bad roading, not off roading. I don't take chances, I want to get back to the Dhaba in one piece, not needing spares and repairs to me or Thar. The second pic is my friend and excellent co-driver Ramesh. He is holding my inclinometer. It's a handy instrument to have and I make my own. I don't go way up there alone or unprepared. This is my second Thar and I and the mountains are getting along nicely. Maybe 5 degrees up there this day. Thar has a pretty good heater, no small thing here. Serious wool jacket and knit cap augment the Thar.

Monsoon breaking up but, not broken September of 2020. Even so, it's nice to be up there breathing mountain air.

The Palampur-Dharmashala road is in excellent condition, isn't it. Just went for a quick short visit in Jan 2020 to Dharamshala from my place near Bir with some friends who were visiting me from Chandigarh.

re: All Team-BHP 4x4 Jeep Pics!

My 2018 Thar with 22,000km on it has had exactly one sticky door lock that needed attention so far. That is the only repair. I also have a 2013 Thar with 135,000km on it. So far:

1.) Whole new clutch
2.) Wheel bearings
3.) Rebuilt starter motor
4.) Rebuilt alternator
5.) New water pump (Leaking badly)
6.) New tie rod ends twice.
7.) Brake pads twice
8.) Patched radiator
9.) Two U-joints on the driveshafts
10.) Windshield wiper motor

These are more repairs than I wanted but not bad considering the heavy usage it still gets. Motor is like new, burns no oil at all. New paint is going to happen soon.

The following pics are my 2018 Thar, Himalayan gorges that have hydroelectic powerhouses in them and therefore have some decent maintenance roads that get you a ways up there without undue risk. These pics are just East and West of Palampur, H.P. I am guessing I am at about 6700 feet and some of the mountains soar up to 18,000 feet in the area just northeast of Palampur. These roads are not dangerous if you are mildly awake, eyes open.

re: All Team-BHP 4x4 Jeep Pics!

View from a ridge looking north toward the front range. Not far from Nagrota, H.P. Look in the upper left corner amongst the clouds for the mountains. No snow upstairs yet. Unusual for mid-October. Sun and cool dry mountain air making even the lowly Mahindra paint take on a vibrance.

re: All Team-BHP 4x4 Jeep Pics!

Some pics on the road to Keylong after going thru the new Atal Tunnel. Camera just doesn't capture the size of these mountains. Human eye has trouble with it, too. Ah, well. I hope you all get a chance to get deep into the Himalayas sometime. By 4X4 or Yak caravan. First pic, the road is at about 10,000 feet. Those mountains in the center are still a ways away. There is a river between the road and these mountains. The rightmost one is maybe 15-16,000 feet and is taller than the darker one over the jeep.

re: All Team-BHP 4x4 Jeep Pics!

First big snow of this season, long overdue, dressing up Moonpeak in the middle of the picture. I took this about 14km S.E. of Dharamsala. The ridge to the left is a bit over 14,000 feet. Moonpeak, so called because the full moon comes up over it from the perspective of Dharamsala, is 15,222 feet and actually a little further North, center top.

Just changed my oil (Synthetic) and checked my intake. No problems after 12,000km with my air mass sensor unplugged and my EGR hard-plugged with a sheet metal stopper. No oil leaking from the oil separator. This is my 2018 Thar with 24,000km on it, running like a simian whose modesty has been molested.

re: All Team-BHP 4x4 Jeep Pics!

Due North lie the Himalayas, today with a fresh coat of snow. If ever there was a place where a 4X4 earns its value, it's here.
