Heating issue prevelant as ever

Heating issue prevelant as ever

Hey guys
I took the 3B for an OTR on the 16th. And though the vehicle's performance was great the heating issue raised its ugly head once again.
The issue was not so big earlier but I got the rings changed in the engine and since that day its a mystery that where does all the water disappear.
I have a 5 liter can of water in my jeep and I had to fill it up 3 to 4 times.
So on Sunday I have given the 3B at a workshop in Noida. This is owned by Jasvinder Singh(Jas). The Delhi jeepers know him and the workshop specialises only in petrol engines especially Hurricane's.

I had gone there with the intention of doing the complete engine overhaul, but Jas's mechanic said that the engine is in a good shape and does not need an overhaul. He however was not very happy with the radiator said that it was local and need's to be changed. He also observed that the the timing was out that along with the valves are needed to be dealt with.
For me all this is rocket science .
After all this is done then Jas with drive the vehicle around for a couple of days and when satisfied I will take the delivery.

I had a talk with Jasvinder and the following work is done
  • The radiator has been changed. The old one was leaking from the bottom
  • The head gasket was leaking and water was seeping in the 2nd and 3rd chamber. So this has been replaced. Strangely the headgasket was replaced at Mayapuri thrice , but I believe that those gaskets must have been local and were giving way under preassure.
  • The Carburetor has been serviced. There was lot of dirt in it. This too was serviced in Mayapuri.
  • I had an issue of the 4x4 High-Low lever was slipping into netutal from the high ratio. So the transfer along with the gearbox has been overhauled and one of the gears/ rotors was completely worn out and since been changed.
  • The engine has been tuned. tapets & valves have been set. ( Now to me all this is rocket science) I have just heard and reproducing it)
The work on the vehicle is now complete. Jasvinder will drive it around for next couple of days and if satisfied, I will take delivery by Saturday/ Sunday.

Sounds as if Jas has managed to get to the bottom of the overheating problem.

I guess Mayapuri is a not too great for work then. Hate to say this but their are a lot of scoundrels in Mayapuri.

When my dad came to Delhi for the XD3P head with our mechanic, they saw an engine which looked excellent and the guy let the mechanic remove and inspect the head. They thought they had found a bargain in a complete XD3P engine and thought we might as well get the fuel pump checked as well. One of the chotus was to accompany the mechanic to the local place to get the pump inspected but the owner then decided to go. Big mistake, he obviously knew the fuel pump guy who passed the pump with flying colours. They got everything back to Hisar and the fuel pump was useless. Got it refurbed locally quite cheap but taught us lesson not to place too much trust in Mayapuri traders.

Continuing from where I left last

The work on the CJ3B is now complete. I told Jasvinder to drive around the vehicle for a couple of days and see whether the vehicle is as per his and his uncles liking. I was certainly in no hurry. Also as there was an OTR coming up on Sunday the 31st May, 09, Jasvinder me me agreed that he will get the vehicle to the OTR venue and drive it around to see if any more issues remained to be resolved. This way I could drive around in the 550, which I was very eager, and my 3B could also be tested. Further by doing it this way, I was saved the effort of first getting the vehicle from Noida to my home, then driving it to the OTR and god forbid any issue crops up again taking it back to Noida. So this was the best way out.

OTR Day
31st May 2009

Well I would say the the performance of my 3B couldn't be better at the OTR. No heating, no stalling. Nothinig!!!
Jasvinder drove the vehicle from Noida to Gorgaon, did the OTR and the terrain was sand, rock etc, so driving was mostly in 4x4 many times needing the low ratio too. No heating NOTHING!!!
I couldn't be happier. After a long time I truly enjoyed my vehicles. The performance of the 550 was great and the 3B was also very well behaved. In fact Jasvinder told be that they filled up the radiator with coolant 3 days back and drove it in Noida for 30-40 kms, then from Noida to Gurgaon, did the OTR and then back to Noida. He din't add a drop of water in it. I was surprised as it was too good to true, but luckily it was.
The 4x4 slippage was finished, the sound of the engine, What sound the sound had vanished and I could simply hear the sound of the fan. Good job accomplished. Now I think why I din't go there earlier. Had I did, I would have saved if not money but at least lots of time and effort. But now I know where to take my 1963 WILLYS LHD. Yes I have another one

I brought the vehicle from Noida yesterday back home and was driving at speeds of 70-75km/hr and no heating. Infact the temperature refuses to go above 60. It actually stays between 40-60 and in crawling traffic too, is between 60-80 degrees. Now I think that I need a thermostat as the optimum temperature the engine should run is around 80 degrees or so. But let me enjoy this new found luxury for some days.
HAHAHA
Total bill at the workshop Rs.11,000/- which included the radiator for 4,000 bucks and 2500 for the gearbox and transfer case overhaul. All in all I would rate the job satisfaction 100 out of 100. Infact 110 out of 100.

All comments and suggestions are most welcome.

dear harjeev,as far as i remember this workshop was my brain child and which started with my tools and my vision with my hard earned money and my uncle who is doing hurricanes and go devils. Its been only a year for him in petrol jeeps,i still remember he wanted a "ARMY SPEC JEEP" and a diesel one,its only when he met and i made him understand what a hurricane is all about.Infact i sent insisted you also to buy 3bs,which you did later, but putting him forward as a through n through hurricane guy is not justified. The point is that you knew everything and i felt offended on what you have mentioned in your post.

I need to install a temperature gauge on my CJ3B , it does not have one. Can this be done easily ? My radiator doesn't leak, so I too will experiment with filling it up with coolant instead of water. Should do a lot of good to the engine.

hi shahid mandeep this side, yes a temerature gauge can easily be installed on your 3b and coolant is always the best for engine blocks as it is less corrosive.since you would be getting a temp gauge, try to get a vacuum gauge also,it helps in tuning the carb incase of long distance travel or on high altitudes, you can do it yourself, the gauge takes an intake from the engine vacuum,i tried this on 3b and it worked brilliantly.

Hi Mandeep,

You told Harjeev what a Hurricane is all about, and insisted he buy a Petrol CJ3B.

What did you tell Kandisa, he had a MM440 with a Original Hurricane engine, why, or did you convince him that the Hurricane has a replacement?

Regards,

Arka

PS - The only thorough "Hurricane" guy I know is Jammy (MM440)

ARKA it was purely kandisa's decision as he mentioned me the kind of travel he would be doing.we have kept the engine and trans as we would be installing it back into the jeep after 2-3 years as his work place(beyond greater noida)would be shifting back to delhi or noida, which would be quite near to his residence, the thing is when kandisa's jeep was getting done, there were no suitable workshops were around in del for hurricanes,i myself used to tow my jeeps to punjab at my uncle's workshop to get them tuned, over the years i have tried everyone around in delhi and was not satisfied with the kind of workmanship is required for hurricanes, when kandisa's jeep project was started,i got fed up of getting the jeep done from here and there so ventured into opening up my own and got my uncle from punjab. In the end,it was purely his decision as i gave him the option,in my point of view if one has to drive atleast 50-70 kms everyday and to a place where you dont get anything, forget about a mechanic, and a person who is a novice in jeeps,i would still vouch for what i suggested kandisa,i got hurricanes and isuzu's also,so i know the difference,"I DIDNT TELL KANDISA", i suggested, there is a difference..

My 3B has a temperature gauge and is now running on a mixture of coolant and water. (I think that's how its suppose to be)
You can talk to Mandeep and his mobile number should be on the NIOC database section. If you do not get it do let me know I will pm it to you.

I clearly remember that when the jeep bug bit me in December, I wasn't able to decide what to buy a 550 or a CJ3B. My heart was set on a 550 but when I met Mandeep at his workshop he was one of the very few guys that I came in touch with who told me to buy a 3B. Though I din't listen to him initially but at the back of my mind aI kept thinking, "Man why can't I have both of them. There's no rule against that." The hardest part was to break the new to my family after I bought the jeep.

I am quoting from my 1st post in this thread.

Now when I look back at my decision I am glad I went ahead and bought this jeep. My 550 is a great preformer too, but the 3B is a different affair altogether. Thanks buddy

Arka, these were exactly my thoughts when I read that Kandisa was putting in a Isuzu engine/5speed trooper gearbox into a rare 440 which had a Hurricane with a 4 speed gearbox.

@Kandisa: Please keep the Hurricane engine safe and more importantly the 4 speed gearbox and bell housing.

I agree with that statement. Many Jeepers including myself can vouch for that. Jammy is a big fan of the Hurricane engine and always educates and encourages newbies to go in for Petrol Jeeps.

To each his own. He is a very practical chap. He explained to me the economics of running jeep on lpg and even if you add rebuild costs, it still made sense.

It was not my decision to part with the hurricane, kandisa is very new to the jeep world and has started driving lately only,he is not too much into offroading, but would like a vehicle with 4x4 and reliability for long distance travel, and he would be using the jeep everyday for office use also, after all these inputs,i suggested him to go for an isuzu setup rather than hurricane,it would have been much more easeir for me to restore the jeep with hurricane in it and would have been done much faster. So in the end i will still say that dont rule out statements on me,i drive hurricane too and have always pushed people to opt for one,all the hurricane jeeps in NIOC apart from 2 or 3,have been suggested by me,harjeev bought two, sanjeev, prabh bought one each.Everyone has his/her liking and has the right of choice,so it was kandisa's choice,i cant argue with that,i just gave pros and cons and whatever suited him he opted for it.

cheers mate
