My car is a 2009 make, and except for the probable tinkering done to meet emission norms, the current version of the car is identical to it.

I'd say the only problem with the carb version would be the brakes, if these aren't boosted. And other extreme things like issues above 10,000 feet that are largely theoretical for most people.

But if it has boosted brakes, with discs in front, a good used version is the way to go for the kind of use you seem to have planned for it. Use the money saved to take the wife for a deluxe holiday!

Forget the Gypsy, I myself might fly the coop if I have to go up to 10k feet above MSL.

The second highest peak in South India (Doddabetta) in Ooty is 8500 odd feet above sea level and I've gone up there in my old hardtop 970 cc carb gypsy. No worries.

Sadly this one ain't got them boosted brakes. And the BHP is lower than the MPFi.
I really don't see myself waddling off to Leh Ladakh in the Gypsy. Or the Himalayas. Driving All the way from Bangalore I mean.

If Ever I do that type of road trip, the chances are, I will take my Yeti.

Yes, this Deluxe holiday thingy is what I have been doing these last several years, perhaps even more than one such, each year. That's why this time I thought of a Gypsy indulgence for my early middle age / mid life crisis years instead...

A brake booster can be fitted without much fuss is what I understand, and the cost would be < 10K including labor.

Not really, some people do visit 15000 feet often with an unchanged carb setting

I have no experience of after market brake booster fitment; the only advice I can think of is to be sure that it is done by someone that you are very sure knows what he is doing.

Do let me know if you need any more clarification.

I will be reinstalling brake booster assembly in my 5 Speed 800 next month. Total cost incurred will be approximately 7k. A bit more than usual as I will change many parts so that the fitting is OEM. One can always do a short cut by tapping vacuum using a T-Joint.

For me the decision is about the controlled yet powerful hiss of an mpfi with the added 20BHP and brake boosters factory fitted or the 1.3 carb with that growly double downdraft mikuni...

The big decision here is whether I buy brand new or go used...

Will take a while more to make that final decision...

Blame it on your English or the charm of the gypsy, your posts over last few weeks have been giving me sleepless nights.

Now my dilemma is worse.
What I have now:
1. An old marshal jeep- exclusively used by my father for his random once a week joyrides. he get chauffeured rest of the time. he won't let me touch it.
2. Ecosport- the family workhorse- driven by chauffeur, used by father, mom and wife. Its used within city and upto all trips 150-200 kms( once every 10 days)
3. Innova - used for long trips 400 kms+ once every 4-5 months. rest by me
4. i10- only me

My driving needs- 4-5 kms total daily.( almost no traffic and time, I often forget to switch on AC and ICE).
maybe 20 kms on weekends- random loitering around to kill time. rarely more than 2 people in the car.
Now Innova and i10 are only for my use and keep alternating just to keep them running.
Diesel is free for me , Petrol I need to buy- don't ask why
Dilemma:
1 I can't sell anything for now. Innova won't be sold for like 10 years. i10 maybe in 2 years, ecosport 2020.
2 The only car i like from existing is the ecosport, but i rarely get to drive it. It is used by all for its compact size and diesel advantage ( and is also the newest)
3. I was itching for a a bike(RX100/RX135/himalayan) but not allowed
4. I had planned to get the upcoming Jimny to replace the i10 two years later. That holds true if I don't get gypsy now
5. Other new cars on my wishlist few years down the line- Grand vitara and Scross- to replace ecosport. Not possible before 2020


But reading all these posts ( Mr. Cool Dube's as well) has done you know what.
Now my questions:
1. I'll only buy used, any rough prices will be helpful. I would prefer a MPFI version.
2. I see a lot of MPFI gypsies in my state- government and large company owned. Is it a good idea to source from them? some politicians too seem to have nice private gypsies used as escort cars( clean and shiny).
3. I have driven the gypsy few times- didn't understand 4X4 or anything then. I was thrilled as I loved it's looks ( still do). I am not going to do any offloading, there are hills all around which have been tackled easily with Boleros. I don't drive above 100 in any car.
4. Is there any diesel jeep that'll be equally loveable, given that diesel is particularly beneficial in my case? Should I look around for the mahindra classic, what should be prices compared to gypsy?
5. I don't intend to spend too much on buying and upgrading. Had spent too much time and money doing up my w124 and drove it very little. No TLC this time which will only benefit the next owner- keep it simple.
6. What do I really want? feel good - I haven't got anything nice for only myself since the w124. Can't get anything flashy or expensive ( or it would have been a w123 or pajero sfx).

The idea is to hang on to it for around 4-5'years...

I have a budget max 2.5...
And I KNOW I will get one within that price band.

But if all efforts fail, then Im thinking brand new...and will look at hanging on to that at least for 7-8 years.

Guys,i own a 97 gypsy king mg413 carb. I work in an NGO along with the forest dept. The problem now is, the 4wd shifter is not engaging to 2H., it can either be shifted to 4L or 4H..if the shifter is positioned to 2H, vehicle doesn't move. But the fact is, my front wheels are not spinning atall..its actually in 2WD, i tested it in slush and mud terrains. What can be wrong? A help will be much appreciated.

These are Nylon tyres with tubes. I would suggest a swap with AT Tubeless 215/75 R15. My experience with Yoko Geo has been good (more on-road / very less off-road).

You should be able to buy them in any automobile shop. These are easily available.
