I learned this the hard way today. And even the local upholsterer said not to waste my time on this.

That is a standard fare with the Gypsy as well as any leaf spring based Jeep. Quite straightforward to fix - get the set re-cambered or get a new one, if worn out.

Yes I intend getting these recambered completely. Both sides. And if required and if recommended by the mechanic, I ll get new Shock Absorbers too.

Omni's should be a straight fit.

I will check this and seek the mechanic's advice too. The existing seatbelts work. But Im just thinking it might be nice to change them.

Are the OE covers completely gone?

No on the contrary they are in great shape after their recent shampoo bath. However, for ease of maintenance and avoidance of dust permeation, Im thinking of the seat covers (tailored and fitted for the Gypsy by a local upholsterer who works just behind my house and does a pretty fair decent job)

Great. I lined mine with 3M mats all over, since my intended usage is different than yours.

No. I ve been recommended to a Workshop near HSR called Car Mechs. The owner Babu was an early Gypsy rally driver and used to race with Leelakrishnan etc in the 1980's and 1990's. Babu was recommended to me by an old mutual friend.

Better go via an agent. It is a bloody pain getting it done yourself.

For sure I will use an agent once the NOC comes through. I just don't have the time to do it myself anyway.

Answered above. Re-tension won't help. Go for a complete re-camber or replacement.

Alrighty then!

The Gypsy is back from 2 days work and servicing at Car Mechs.

They discovered that one RH leaf spring was broken.
Its been replaced now and the Gypsy is no longer flying 'right wing low'.

We ve done a full engine and general servicing, drained and changed the engine oil, cleaned and oiled / overhauled the brakes, topped up the coolant, changed the brake fluid, replaced a couple of small parking lamp bulbs, cleaned the fuel injectors thoroughly, changed the oil filter, reset the front bumper to give a little more clearance to the tyres and then thoroughly washed the vehicle again.

The gear oil and transfer case oil and differential oil doesnt need changing as of now as per the mechanic.

The shock absorbers are also fine.

Now I can really feel the difference when I drive the Gypsy.

It feels so much smoother and refined with much leas vibration all around and there are no unhappy cling clang noises coming from beneath.

He has recommended that I use 30PSI tyre pressure but I am using 27PSI only.

The ride itself is so much more composed and way smoother.

I ve just received the set of 5 Michelin rubber floor Mats which Ive immediately installed.

The boot area mat is still awaited along with a large plastic storage bin with a lid and clasps, which I intend to stow in the rear luggage bay to keep all my odds and ends in one place.

Im now just waiting to get that windshield washer can replacement and a thick rubber beading for the rear door frame along with a few small odd parts like the bonnet rod and one footboard rubber cover which is missing from the day it came, to complete the initial phase of work.

Im very glad to say the Gypsy is now very well on its way to its rejuvenated life and Im sharing a few more pics too in this!

I ve even got a nice heavy duty canvas cover for the vehicle in camo pattern which I will use to keep it covered when Im not using the vehicle.

New Query:
Is it normal for the freewheeling hubs on the Gypsy to generally be greasy and coated with dust which makes a blackish paste?

Or is this an indicator of some wellness issue?

I have a tiny droplet by droplet leak of oil under the car gearbox which the mechanic said was some cable's worm gear which leads from the dashboard to the gearbox.

That apparently needs to be changed and this tiny droplet by droplet leak will stop.

Any ideas?

So Im at this great old place - Green Cars whom I know for 15 years!
I thought they'd closed.
I am so happy they are open.
Clearly the drip drip oil is from the Speedo Worm gear assembly which needs changing.
Parts ordered.

Gypsy undergoing OBD scan and one more general checkup.

Trying to get all the wheel nuts changed too, to fresh new ones.

Some more small parts too, being ordered...

The old blackened wheel nuts on the Gypsy have been changed to new shiny ones.

I like these new ones whose design has an integrated forged cap.

Visited Sri Raksha motors off Sarjapur Road.
Looks like this chap Sardar the owner is quite a Gypsy specialist. Going by my interaction today and of course the number of Gypsys parked around in varying Stages of disrepair...

He said they were all awaiting parts.

Also saw a nice old Willys Jeep tucked away in a corner there.

Anyway with Sardar's help I was able to procure the Speedometer Worm Gear and cable from
Popular automobiles and have the new one fitted properly.

One of our TBHP mates (Jaguar) put me on to this Garage via PM this morning and I promptly visited there.

Glad I went. Thanks Jaguar!

Now I ve got to run the Gypsy for around 50-100
Kms and observe the situation ref the leak, just to be on the safe side...

Hi, I'm getting frequent pressure drops from my tyre. I'm running Bridgestone Dueler A/T 215/75/15 tubeless on stock gypsy rims. Last month my rear right tyre lost pressure and today I noticed rear left has also fallen to 10psi. Does this means that I have to go for wider rims? I believe the stock rims are 6.5. Anybody with similar experience??

Thats a strange problem Raul.
How old are the tyres?
Have you checked the neck valves?
And whether the cotter pins inside the neck valves are ok?
Are any of the rims bent near the edges?

The 'loss of pressure' in my case, was observed only on my Yeti and that was when the tyres were more than 4 years old and had hardened.

Plus at that age they were prone to small tiny punctures and slow leaks as well as of course more frequent bigger punctures per se. Its nothing to do with steel rims or alloys - either of these types of wheels can bend with rough roads and potholes.

I ve never observed this kind of thing on any of the Gypsys I ve had - but then until this Gypsy I ve always used tube type tyres, never tubeless. Always used only stock rims, never alloys. Even the brand new Ceat Rhinos I had put on my last Gypsy in 2005 were tube type.

On this new (Old) Gypsy King I ve just put the tubeless Goodyear Wranglers a week back or so. Stock steel wheel rims only. And I am maintaining 27PSI all around as the air pressure. I dont plan using Nitrogen on these unless anyone here feels that it is recommended.

The tyres are just a few months old. I maintain 30 psi on all tyres for better fuel efficiency and none of the rims are bent which I had checked during the tyre change.. I'll have to check the valves though..
I can safely rule out puncture coz the tyre holds the pressure for a week after being filled.

Anyway I have 30psi on all tyres now and I'm closely watching for any pressure drops.

The reason I asked is that I happened to see Yokohama 235 tyres on alloys and it seemed much wider than my 215's. Since the maximum tyre size for 6.5 inch wheels is 215, am I operating it in a crammed space in my stock rims?

Pal. 235 size is definitely much wider than the 215. It is very Over sized for the Gypsy irrespective of whether you try shoving them on the stock rims (where they wont fit) or on alloy wheels. The stock radial recommended for Gypsy is 205 size.
With 235 the steering effort will be huge and most irritating.

Well, 235's do fit nicely on the stock rims. I ran MRF Zigma 235's and then Maxxis Trepador 235 on stock rims. No issues at all. Have seen a friend run 255 (IIRC) also on stock rims with no issues.

Steering with even 31" tyres was not an issue (for a manual steering). If it is hard then the issue is with kingpin shims. (have driven few of friends with this issue)

Having said all this, 215 is the perfect size for a recreational / functional gypsy. Anything over that is only if you know why you need that extra upsize for.
