Re: Maruti Suzuki Gypsy - Queries

Guys I am yet to find my dream gypsy , but zeroed on a particular vehicle which is in Tamilnadu. I am based in Bangalore and thinking of getting it registered here. Its a civilian registered 2008 model bone stock.( Ex army ones have quality issues) My question is how much I have to spend on reregistration or can I ride it in Bangalore with TN registration. The civilian vehicles in Bangalore are priced astronomically and my budget is max 3.5Lacs.

Hi Sam,

I had reregistered my vehicle from HP to KA. I had to spend about ~45,000 on the road tax and registration to KA. And I paid some agent fees in addition as well, to manage this. The road tax was calculated based on the the last known price in a way - which was about 672000, which would not have been the price of my vehicle in 2010. ( I have a 2010 ex army HT)

Since, you're buying a civilian vehicle. I hope that the invoice is available for the vehicle. In which case, they will base the price on the invoice ex-showroom value. So let's assume that the invoice value then was about 5,00,000. From my understanding of the process, the road tax should be about ~25,000. If we take that they will charge 14% road tax on 37% percent of the car's invoice value since it is 12-13 years old.

I hope this helps, and my understanding is correct. Others may correct me if am wrong

Re: Maruti Suzuki Gypsy - Queries

Thanks for the help. This surely be one time consuming process. I shall have to negotiate better or search for KA registered gypsy alternatively.

Re: Maruti Suzuki Gypsy - Queries

As luck would have it, found one 2018 gypsy civilian gypsy with soft top just around the corner. Upgraded suspension and with some minor modifications. Vehicle is just drool worthy in original paint and tyres. But the asking price 6.5 lakhs. Almost double my budget and the owner won't budge. Is it a good price.

It's a steal price. A 2018 model Gypsy retailed at 8.1 Lakhs.
Upgraded suspension and minor modifications would also cost some money.

Keeping in mind that this isn't available to purchase, it is a seller's market.
So, in my humble opinion, 6.5 Lakhs is a very good price.

As starter also mentioned, the price seems to be good, given the current market scenario. And for a 2018 model it is a steal.

I may let go of my 2010 Gypsy too in the near future, and would look at a price of 4 - 4.5 lakhs, even though it's an ex army Gypsy. So for a 2018 Civilian, this seems like a great price.

If this is just a hobby and a 2nd car requirement then maybe wait for the Jimny 5D launch? Not to buy the Jimny but the resale prices of Gypsy should come down in that year I am thinking... maybe 2022 end quarter if launched in first quarter of 2022 would be a good time to start fishing for old Gypsies.

Generally the traffic police does not stop Gypsy's as they are either govt vehicles or part of the military or para-military. So if this Gypsy looks like one of these you should be safe. White hard-top vehicles are used by the navy and the paramilitary like CISF.

Just stumbled upon this post and incidentally I'm getting an OME installed in my Gypsy today. It's an used one and being swapped from a friend's Gypsy, ex owner of this Gypsy is bhpian cool_dube. It was him who installed it and has given me the confidence to buy it besides giving good feedback on the set up.
The present owner is upgrading to Iron man and hence I bought it. It was used for ~8k kms or so and is in good shape as updated by my mechanic. Great to hear positive feedback from you too on OME. Looking forward to testing it out today. My requirement was to improve the ride, if it improves by 20% I would be happy. Fingers crossed !

Gypsy gurus, Request help.

The OME installation ended up having the issue of my front left tyre fouling with the bolt that holds the leaf springs together. Initially my mechanic suggested wheel alignment to resolve the issue but the issue persists after the alignment job too. Appears like it has nothing to do with alignment(the job was done at Madhus Bangalore). I've a stock steering(no power assist) and using a 215/75/R15 tyre. There was no issue of fouling earlier with the stock suspension. I had also changed the steering box a week back since it had lot of play and steering was extremely hard in parking speeds.

OME Kit came with a steering damper too. The stock one which was there earlier was found to be dead with zero damping and it was kind of jammed at the end of it's travel. The steering earlier was very hard towards the end of turn(both sides) while it's turned. Few bhpians whom I spoke to indicated that while fixing the steering damper the centering of wheel may have not been done properly and the steering wheel should've had equidistant turns to both sides.

What worries me the most is the tyre is extremely close to the leaf springs itself though it's now only touching the bolt.

Meanwhile I did drive the car for 15-20 kms post installation and it exceeded my expectations of a better ride comfort. My Gypsy has transformed itself and it's much much more composed on broken tarmacs. I did test it on few flyovers with very wide expansion joints and potholes and the difference was very evident. I would say a 35-40% improvement in ride quality and extremely happy with the upgrade. The joy was short lived though with this unexpected issue that has cropped up.

I plan to do the following tomorrow

1. Try and reverse the bolt where it's head goes to other side. It would still make the tyre perilously close to the leaf spring.
2. Check on the damper fitment.
3. Possibility of moving the bolt to adjacent slot.

What could be the issue here and possible solution. Thank you. Few pictures below.

The circled part is the one that's fouling with the tyre.

The below image is of my earlier stock leaf spring. Note the clamp without the bolt.

Would it help if I move the clamp to the circled slot, but it seems to be a riveted one.

Chill! No tension! I experienced the same with Ironman kit. I got a 1” wheel spacer from USA but I think you can find one locally at Swastik Fabs I think. Just make sure the spacer you buy comes with its own lug nuts or studs and holes to bolt-on to the original hub. These will give adequate stud length to affix your tyres to. The ones that don’t come with their own lug nut and use the original are just like washers and as a result you will have 1” less stud length to fix your wheels.
I am using these ones since more than last 8 yrs without issues -

Since it is more than 7 yrs I don’t remember where I experienced fouling but yes I too experienced it only on one side … this may be it!

Maruti Suzuki Gypsy - Hyderabad service

Hello all, I need to get our Gypsy serviced in Hyderabad. When I called the close by dealer they said they don’t service the Gypsy any more, which surprised me. I didn’t call all service centers to check.

Can anyone point me to an authorised Maruti service Center (preferred) or a mechanic who specialises in a Gypsy, in Hyderabad?

Thank you!

You could try Amar from Xenex in HiTech City. +91 86860 00001. They specialise in off road vehicles. Servicing and mods etc. His place is diagonally opposite the NEXA showroom.

Re: Maruti Suzuki Gypsy - Queries

Hello guys.

I need help regarding some issues:

1- I am experiencing 'missing' (lack of smooth constant acceleration), irregular idling, and sometimes even the engine gets off while I free-coast. The mechanic has suggested changing the throttle body. What could be the issue?

2- The steering box leaks green fluid while I park my vehicle. Apparently, my steering has become very hard. But that may be due to malfunctioning in my EPS which has apparently stopped working after a water crossing.

3- What should be frequency of changing the differential gearing fluids? I have not done it since 3 years and 10k km (mostly off-road)?

4- My leafs have gone completely flat at the front. And while the wheels flex (I have the stability bar removed), one of the two leafs gets inverted. Shall I add a couple of helper leafs to raise the height? I am afraid it might ruin the ride further and reduce the articulation.

5- The 2" shackles that I have installed do not swing during the articulation but remain at an constant angle thus, not helping in increasing the articulation further. May be because the mechanic has overtightened them. Shall I loosen them a bit?

TIA

(1) & (2) I have no expertise so wont comment.

(3) Every 40k kms is fine but if you put synthetic you can stretch to 50k.
(4) Normal in OEM Gypsy leaf - the flat camber actually softens the ride. Extra leaf is very much recommended. How is the ride without stabilizer/sway bar above 50-100kmph on highways? Have you done sharp hair-pin bends without sway bar at +40kmph? Does it feel safe?
(5) I think the correct torque setting should be 26-30Nm. I am having difficulty finding a Garage that has a working torque wrench too - everybody has a "jugaad setting by hand and feel" approach.
