it was done before decade or two but not any more .
AFAIK now engine no is punched when engine is assembled & dynoed which contains info about engine type, make, etc.
chassis no is punched when going out of assembly line which contains info about vehicle body, drive type ,build date, etc.

jeep gurus more info please .

Found it - How army vehicles are auctioned!

Greetings,
It seems that many government agencies as well as Ministry of Defense has appointed Metal Scrap Trading Corporation of India (MSTCIndia) as their auction agent.
Link below lists all the active auctions:
Forthcoming_e_Auctions_For_All_regions_
All details are given there. How it works in real, I don't know.
Hope this helps,
Sanjay

Picked up a very good condition mpfi Gypsy and an equally excellent 550 from Pune recently.
Watch out for the restoration threads (or shall I say ownership threads as there is hardly anything to restore) soon.

Any idea what is a GAZ KAPSO ?
2 of these are in an upcoming auction :
Auction No MSTC/ERO/AIR FORCE STATION, KALAIKUNDA/2/KALAIKUNDA/10-11/2674[29503]
Opening Date & Time 08-09-2010::11:00:00

So one of these is going to be your safari vehicle?

How much did you get the MM550 for? Did you quote for that directly?

1.35 for the 2000 mm550 and 1.85 for the 2002 BSII Mpfi Gypsy.
We bid directly on mstc and got the vehicles deliver GHed last week.

Here are the pics of the 550 - as it came out of the depot. We only had to put a battery and it started.

Dr Ghosh,

GAZ or Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod (Russia, Nizhny Novgorod), translated as Gorky Automobile Plant. GAZ Vehicles were the main stay of the USSR Military and I think they still are the mainstay of Russian & CIS Military.

By default of our military cooperation with USSR, Russia and CIS in that order, I am sure we have a lot of military hardware in our military too

I am posting a few pictures of GAZ Vehicles.

Since this is an Air Force auction, I suspect that this could be GAZ 66 Vehicles (third picture from top). During mid 60s a lot of them came as the tender vehicle for the SAM Missile systems and as Missile carrier towing vehicles etc (Second picture from Top).

I am not sure what the KAPSO derivative is

Since the new Russia's advent they are one of the better car makers in Russia and a picuture of their current top line SUV is also posted

Best Regards and Drive/Ride Safe

Ram
