What is the reason behind the huge muffler/silencer? I dont think a stock qualis comes with this big.

Samurai did you drive the jeep? How is it, please share your experience, esp with NVH levels.

Wow! What a fab looking jeep! Hats off the the owner and the mechanic!! Please do post the driving experience.

Sharath, if I may ask...how much does that winch cost and where did he source it from!? A friend is really keen on a winch for his MM540.

Thats nice. What about long time reliability with the mix and match.

The winch looks sweet.

Oh, time to rename the thread A Restored MM550 (xxx) and how...

XXX - the qualis engine code :)

Yes, I drove it around my office in the dry grassland. The engine purrs instead of puttering. This is with the windows down. If the window is up and AC is on, I doubt the engine can be heard at all.

As compared to the bullet-proof reliability of an old stock Jeep?:uncontrol

Saumrai / Sashas, could you please comment on this?:):D

Apart from the 18k for the engine, could you share some costs?

This would work only with the BA10 GB? Would not be possible with the T18 box?

No plans or rerouting the exhaust or use a smaller silencer chamber? Thats gonna hit during some serious offroading isn't it?

It looks as though single cab utility's cabin is transposed on the 540. Very neat job done. Congrats Sachin.

Warm Regards

Total cost came around 71k this includes engine, battery, radiater, air filter and AC.

Not so different from Thar MDi, is it?:D

Today was offroad testing day for the Qualis Powered MM550.

The offroad track in my office is now acting like a dust bowl. The surface is very brittle and the tyre can easily dig into the terrain. Just yesterday I had tried to climb the well-known hill in my backyard and had failed. The tyre dug up a 8 inches of earth from the trail before I backed off. Right now a longer WB Jeep would have an advantage, as it proved today.

This one is simpler hill, both crawling and momentum was tried, momentum won.

The well-known hill has become to difficult now because of a fast growing tree blocking the usual entry point. That means we can't use the momentum, only crawling is possible now.

But Sachin manages to crawl up at second attempt.

The offroad test of the Qualis Powered MM550 was a very good success.

Now for the group shots. The Udupi Offroad team of two drivers (Sachin & Sharath) and a master mechanic (Prakash Poojary) who keeps these machines chugging along. He has overhauled the engine of all three vehicles, apart from transplanting the Qualis engine into the MM550 and making the un-serviceable Gypsy very very serviceable.

Now the MM550 has lockable front cabin, with AC and music system.

What gearbox is the qualis engine mated to?

Nice jeep, needs MTs though...

The Qualis engine is mated to BA10 gearbox. Right now all 3 vehicles run Geolander AT-S, which is the most popular tyre among Karnataka offroaders.

Can you post some pics of the 550 without the softtop to give us a idea of how the center stell wall is constructed? Will give a lot of us some nice inputs.

I know it needs some effort, but may be possible when it visits the next water wash...
