Apparently the 4WD system got stuck for these two vehicles. Anup has been using his 4WD without any problems for a number of years. The key is to engage it at least once every week or two. Secondly before you leave the clutch make sure that the low range light is not blinking (i.e don't take off whe the mechanism is still engaging low range, this can result in the motor getting stuck). Thirdly if you are fording water, better to put in 4L before going into the water to prevent operating the electric motor under water.

This is precisely why I hate electric transfer cases. Unfortunately with the Scorpio/Safari there is no choice. Thankfully the Thar is coming with a mechanical transfer case.

Does this mean just checking the 4H, 4L by engaging and releasing them by reversing or need to drive for some distance ?

Pramod:

Just engage both 4H and 4L just drive a few meters and disengage. Do this once every couple of weeks atleast. Secondly when you are putting into 4L wait for the light to stop blinking before you give power to the transmission.

@arjun:

The Scorpio atleast the one in front seems to have a lift as well. notice it is taller than the one behind.

thats sad to see the 4WD scorpio getting stuck on not so tough terrain. I guess, it should have come out of that dig.

4x4addict, were these the cases with the 4WD failure on these scorpios OR there was something else ?

4x4addict, help needed

In the morning, I was taking my 1 year old kid for a bit of up and down on a hill top.

at the top of the hillock before descending I stopped the scorp, pressed the clutch - shifted from 2wd to 4L. from what I know, the 4H indicator should come on and blink for 6 seconds and then go off and then the indicator for 4WD low should start glowing. There is no blinking - the 4H indicator comes on, goes away and then 4WD low starts glowing. On descending with 4Lo, 1st gear, engine braking assists you in crawling down without burning brakes.

This non-blinking part - is that a problem? Also I noticed that there is no documentation describing shifting from 2H to 4L in user manual.

the 4H indicator does not blink in the safari. Since the scorpio also uses a borg warner system, and its shift on the fly like the safari, it won't blink. Its the 4L which blinks.
So for 4H, its shift on the fly. For 4L, you shift to 4L, wait for 5-6 seconds, and then march

From what I was told, the the problem was the 4WD system got stuck and 4x4 couldn't be engaged and one of the scorpios had a clutch burn out or something like that. It was more to do with mechanical failure than the terrain. The refreshed 4x4 Scorpio that took part in the Road and Track Munnar event did the whole course along with the jeeps/gypsies. The biggest flaw of the Scorpio 4x4 is the electrical transfer case which could fail due to some electrical contact issues, motor failure, motor getting stuck etc..

These problems don't exist for mechanical transfer cases.

@adzegeek:

blinking is for low range. 4H is shift on the fly so no need to wait. can be done while moving.

Took delivery of my Scorpio 4WD last Friday in Kottayam and drove it to chennai yesterday. With the drive to chennai and some local driving in kottayam, I managed to complete the 1000 km running period in two days. I have been keeping it under 100 kmph for the run in period. I am dying to put pedal to metal but I think I will drive sedately for another 1500 kms. Will post an ownership report after I have clocked some miles.

Congratulations Tini!!! Finally a long-termer SUV in your stable. Please post pics of your 4wd.

So what next on it?-
ARB bumpers ?
LSD?
winch?
AT tyres?
Expedition roof rack?

Well i don't mind all this but don't surrender it to garage for long time again
Lets meet up- Would like to see your jeep in person as well. Is the P.S and axle conversion over?
