HI Kaushik !!

A wonderful machine and a great effort on your part. The color somehow reminds me of `Knight Rider'. The overall look of the Gypsy means serious business. Loved the stripe highlight on the rims. Hope you had a great time on your Ladakh trip. Waiting to see some pictures of this mean machine in action in the Himalayas.

KSM - Great trip log mate! And amazing work. I've only seen gypsies getting restored up north or down south. Wasnt sure if we had any mechs in pune/bombay. I've been looking for a gypsy for a while now. Seen a couple of old makes but wasnt sure if i could restore them. Do you know any gypsies, pref mpfi, that are available in bombay for sale? I've looked up pune and no luck. And i guess, even if i do find them, i'll have to get them to bombay to get the work done.

The "Demon" Project....

Things were going on as usual and I would drive the vtec on a daily basis wherever I went. Only until I realized that if I have to visit LADAKH I need a car that can handle the terrain comfortably and make the trip feel like a mountain rally rather than a slow, scary drive with the fear of bottoming out at places and a sure shot invitation for a suspension re build.

With pdev29 in the group and drives in his “Monstar” every night there was no way I was even going to think of buying any other 4X4 vehicle. The hunt & research began and I found that the Gypsy commanded a major premium in the market and was not easily available. Now since I was buying the gypsy for the Ladakh trip and was not sure if I was going to keep it after that, I dint want to spend a lot on the vehicle.

That’s when I came across the thread on army auction vehicles, this seemed to be a cheaper option and the aspect that attracted me was the thought that I could build the Gypsy myself from scratch and be sure that everything was done perfectly. Worked out the cost structure and it seemed to be a cheaper option than buying a ready gypsy also with the assurance of self administered quality work. Decision was taken and just then an auction was conducted by MSTC which we bid for successfully.

Got a chance to check out the Gypsy only on the delivery day and was shocked to know that it was a carb, but now there was no turning back and I decided to go ahead with the project. This day marked the beginning of never ending sessions at numerous workshops, spare part shops, websites for research etc. It took 5 long months of after office visits to the workshop, endless weekends of working on the gypsy almost till midnight most of the times to build the Gypsy to a level that I was sure of nothing going wrong during the trip. My family and girlfriend almost disowned me during this period since I was more at the workshop then with them (but provided all the support I needed).

Completing the project was possible only because of the support from pdev29, khan_sultan, danlalan, hvkumar, all my friends and off course various workshop guys who worked on my “Demon”.

Great Pictures Kaushik, I've too been a follower and admirer of your travelogues.

BTW in your Ladakh travelogue you wrote that your 4x4 was stuck in neutral and then you rectified it yourself!! That was really something. Could you please explain what exactly went wrong and how you rectified it?
Cheers
