Arka,
This Willys/ Mahindra which is an Indian army disposal is unimaginably mighty when it comes to hardcore off roading, Our offroading needs were different but I can go on telling tales of its maneuverability, ride quality and power with 4 hefty guys on board.
Cant think of any modern Indian stock 4X4 which can beat this one.
It is still powered by the original hurricane petrol engine and 4X4 in excellent condition.
The pics. of your jeep kickstarted my memoirs.
All the best,
Silent, But Violent-dsc05384.jpg

Same was my thought. Any reason to put the diesel tractor engine in place of hurricane in a 3b? Were the spares unavailable?
fazal sir, that is the best looking 3b i have seen so far. What a piece!

Great pictures and writeup ex670c . Waiting for the next set. I presume the 'silent' in the heading denote the petrol power. And the pictures explains the violent part. Quite amazing!

Part 5 - F4-134 Hurricane

I learned everything I know about JEEPs from UBS and Suresh Stephen.

UBS taught me to tune the carburetor over the phone, when the idling was rough or there were cracks and bangs.

Suresh was more adventurous he persuaded me over the phone to adjust the timing, by rotating the distributor, if the engine RPM increases, then its advanced etc, I personally prefer the Static method open the no.1 cyl and feel & check for the Piston to reach 5 degree BTDC and the adjust the CB points, again by rotating the distributor.

I used to get sleepless nights if the Hurricane was not firing right.

Sudhir Kashyap helped me a great deal with M&M CJ3B related information and suggestions while rebuilding and explaining the progress of the F4-134 over the years with M&M.
7.8:1 Compression Ratio head, the optional Low –Ratio 3.3:1 KMT-90, the 2600rpm redline of the Hurricane Engine.

I have experienced the power and torque of the F4-134 many times.

The first time I saw it was on 01-05-05 the first JEEPTHRILLS OTR, on the way back to Chennai we stopped at a friends farm and some guys came to show off their Hybrid Land-Rover, Series III on Discovery Chassis with Coil Springs, Nissan SD25 Engine & Disco GB & T-Case without Centre-Diff-Lock.

The Landy was pulling climbs left, right and centre, but got bogged in a sand pit on the beach, a couple of SWB JEEPs with the XD4.9P huffed and puffed and dug in, it was my turn with the CJ3B, so I looped the tow cable over my front bumper and Reversed the JEEP in Low Ratio, I was stunned to see the La-Ro being pulled out, no wheel spins, no fuss.

Another time in Jan 2006 a friend of mine got his 2WD stuck on the beach, he was sensible enough not to dig it in, so I had to go over and give him a tug.

On the way back we saw an Indica stuck on the beach near Crocodile Farm, since we had the Recovery Gear, decided to give him a hand, this was a gradual climb to the road from the beach, no sweat pulled him out too, apparently the Indica gentlemen went to help a Versa which was stuck further, down.

Well we pulled him out to the road.

Jammy Anand’s fanaticism, actually deterred me from changing the Hurricane, the Hurricane had, good torque and decent BHP, but I wanted more.

To be Contd.

Part 6 – 2008 Rebuild

The Vehicle was lying in the garage since June 2006, decided to finally get the CJ3B on the road, the Painting and Electrical connections were done in 2007, so it was not very difficult getting the JEEP on-road.

I managed to get spares to rebuild the engine thoroughly and Popular Automobile Engineers, undertook the task. In July, 2008 we fitted the F4-134 and got the JEEP running.

Its customary for us to take a newly rebuilt JEEP, to Kelambakkam, so we did that in November.

To be Contd.

Little did you know! A thread that speaks of how Arka got smitten by Jeeps? *clicks 5 star rating*.

@ Arka : Honest answer....what do you love more? Your MM540 or CJ3B, and why?

@GoSlow
1. OTR - MM540
2. Driving in city - CJ3B
3. Long distance - MM540

@GTO,
I love the MM540XD, the CJ3B always manages to bring a smile on my face.

Part 7 – 2009 Rebuild

Hi Guys,

As the JEEP was garaged for two years, the Tool-Box Area had rusted pretty badly, we decided to address that immediately, and then started a hurried rebuild & restoration.

In March 2007, I managed to source a WEBER 2bbl Carburettor for the F4-134, and in July 2008, Electra Automotives of Kamlesh & Krupesh Patel fame installed the Carburettor and 4-1 Headers.

Krupesh decided to tune the JEEP for mid-range keeping 12kgm@900rpm for the Hurricane as a starting point.

She is quicker than most cars on the road, the torque and acceleration has improved considerably, FE is 6-8Kmpl in City conditions………………..and What a GROWL!!!!!

Upgrades
1)FFRA – Mhd.Ali wanted to give me a surprise, he mistook my instructions and converted the CJ3B to FFRA
2)Carburettor WEBER 2bbl.
3)NGK Spark Plus BR6HS (Enfield Bullet 350cc)
4)Seiwa Carrot top Cables (Spark Plug & Ignition Coil i.e. Contessa Classic)
5)Pertronix Flamethrower 1 – Ignition Coil

Regards,

Arka

Concluded.

The B275 is a diesel engine commonly known as International Engine. It was used on the CJ500D "91" Wheelbase JEEPs.

Arka, please share with us some details about your 3rd JEEP as well. Is it under restoration ?
