I got the insurance cover updated last weekend for the Jeep. I opted for 3rd Party (TP in Insurance terms). It did have TP for last year when I purchased it, I decided to leave it at TP. Costed me INR.2895 for the same.

Next expense in the jeep is also paper related - Pay the annual tax for the state of TN - 1050Rs with a 500Rs fine, got delayed coz of the insurance work. This annual tax/green tax/FC is a expense only with "OLD" vehicles that one needs to live with. Can be avoided if one buys a less than 10year jeep/gypsy... enjoy for 5 more years and sell it off before such non-off road work come across.

This reminds methat I have to get the third party insurance renewed for my CJ3B too. Completely forgot about it!!!

Does he take 2-3 days for a 30 min job?

Not sure why you think that... He opened up/put together Shibu's T90 (3+1) GB/TC in 2days... only because i told him to take a week's time since I cant take time off from bangy office and visit him on a working day.

Unlike many bangalore mech's (except our TBhp saviour mech) who are never short of time (but short of customers) - this guy deals with rural folks who value time (somehow) more than a city folk...

I have seen him pull out a FC's (M&M Van) GB down + change Clutch plate Assy, put GB back behind the perkins engine in 45mins flat... just because the Van had to rush back to school for the evening bell.

All this work caused my jeep's job to be 'delayed' and I had to spend '4' hours 'just' for opening up all 4 brake drum assys, clean them, re-pack front knuckles with grease, pull out the erstwhile SFRA's, clean the wheel bearings for water incursion, drain GB+TC of oils, refill them and settle the bill...

svsantosh: I know this is a bit late, but a skid plate for 800 bucks?? About a month ago, I managed to find one (with 3 original nut-bolts, dunno if you got them too) for half that price at the Gujli!!! He quoted 500-odd, but settled for 400 in the end.

Santosh: Shivajinagar Gujli yes, Modi no. IIRC it was a guy named Mushtaq or something. Will confirm with a friend who took his card. The guy had a whole lot of jeep stuff inside, and a hardtop CJ500 waiting to be butchered outside.

Guys we need to share Gujli contacts. I used to go to Ifthikar but, nowdays he seems to have placed me in a higher bracket inspite of me going in my usual old jeans and chappals.

Regd Scrap-AKA-Gujli dealers - Bangalore is a NO-NO any given day... Chennai/Delhi best place since the jeeps are scrapped by the dozen. I rank Delhi @ 1, Chennai @ 2nd, bangalore is pretty expensive to buy scrap Jeep parts!!

Did "some" Shackle job last weekend, ended up paying 300Rs for the lathe shop!! All he did was drill 16 holes and cut 4 metal bushes into size..!! But my above point of mechanic doing a cheap job held true. The mech replaced all 4 shackles for 250Rs. Not just for that job, he also drained the rear diff oil, cleaned with some diesel+oil mix, filled new oil back. We were surprised to find more than a liter of Water inside rear diff!! Root caused the problem to the left rear FFRA axle. The oil seal had conked off, this water and hub grease became a gel toothpaste and started to ooze out and mess the Tyre/rim!! This had caused the water to spiral/whirlpool into the diff when doing water fording.

The rear left hub needs hub greasing ASAP but I decided to postpone it after 18/19 blore OTR. Since I am planning for a full axle housing job (on both front and rear), I currently refilled with 'Made-In-Chennai' Diff oil with a SAE140 rating. It came in a tetra-pack and costs 130Rs/Liter Vs 160~ for Servo. Good enough for a stop-gap. Also learnt that 'Made-in-Chennai' engine oil is available for Rs140~ as opposed to ~180 Servo and ~220 Castrol. These again come in 1 liter tetra packs, should be good enough for a emergency refill situation.

The Longer Shackle has given a ~2 inch chassis lift. Ride is now SUPER HARD and bouncy and bone jarring. Shockers are extended out by the ~2 inches and will Affect Articulation - means search for longer ones!! 215/75/R15 look tiny, need to plan for 31-32"ers...
