550XD - would have XD3P engine + KMT 90 4 Speed gearbox
550XDB - would have XD3P engine + BA10 5 Speed gearbox

I do agree, but what about the Dataplate that claims MM550 DP?

The power train is usually identified the the characters after the 540/550.

DP = 2.1L Engine and 4+1 Gearbox.
XD = 2.5L Engine and 4.1 Gearbox
XDB = 2.5L Engine and 5+1 (BA10) Gear box.

550DP was available in the market for the same reason.

Not True friend. 550 was available as DP as well. There are many original name plates that carry this. As mentioned in my earlier post it has to do with seating capacity. There is also an old MM550 poster at the authorized Mahindra parts distributor from where I buy some parts. The poster high lights the *new* eight seater MM550 DP. The poster also says that it is available with 2.5 Liter engine and 5 Speed gearbox.

The 550DP is nothing but the 540 with a 2.1 ltr engine and all the mechanicals same as the 540 except for the rear bech seats which are the same as the army 550 due to which the seating capacity on the RC book says 8 persons.

Only the 550XD(Army) GB: KMT90 & 550XDB GB: BA10 have 2.5L engine.

We own MM540DP, MM550DP & MM550XD all 3 models in our family (among cousins) so speaking from 1st hand experience.

What About the MM540XD (1994-1996c) XD3P/KMT90

First Mahindra JEEP/Vehicle to have the XD3P engine.

The Major difference is in the Chassis. NGCS: Mew Generation Chassis & Suspension.

Introduced in Army 550 in 2004, the chassis is Box Section (Completely closed ) & older MM550 had C-section Ladder frame chassis. (Open from inside). Hope this helps.
I guess, rear axle was also FFRA for NGCS 550.

May be Sateesh can explain better, Please post some underbody/ chassis pics to compare

Dear all - the major differences between NGCS and old chassis are as follows. NGCS has 2.5 times more torsional rigidity as compared to the old chassis. The rear spring centre line and frame centre line are concentric in the NGCS which is not so in the old chassis which uses outriggers. The rear spring shackles are located in the main NGCS itself which is not so in the old chassis. The tubular cross members of the NGCS are located in trepanned holes in the long members, which is not so in the old chassis.

Old chassis is history.
