Team-BHP - Top Speeds of a 4x4 (pure offroaders)

I completely understand that achieving speed is not the primary motive of any 4x4 and I am sure they were not designed or built with this concept in mind.
They have been built for a different need and many of us use it effectively.:)

On the highway or for commuting a 4x4 can become very monotonous, lethargic and if I may put it straight, slow.

I think every 4x4 is unique in terms of engines, gear ratios and other specs, as most are built, engine transplanted, wheels modded and the works. very few would be identical on marginally similar lines and a further few stock.

I had heard of a CJ340 running on a Scorpio petrol heart powered by NOS. The source claims that it achieved great speeds and cleared most obstacles as it was able to gather a lot of momentum. This does not impress me much as this is completely against the ideology of owning a 4WD. He also claims it was able to do 130 on the highway. A SWB doing 130 on the highway is suicide.

Getting back to the topic, I would like to know the top speed or rather comfortable speeds you guys are able to manage on your 4x4, if you have a working speedo.:D

1990 CJ340- 90kmph.

'97 Classic running on a 2.5 XD3P diesel. Will do 115 kph(indicated) yet most comfortable at 80. The handling & steering are way too vintage to allow safe cruising above 80 km/h.

Even the Gypsy King is best <100 kph.

More power = more momentum = inherent advantages in a climb, through large sand dunes & the like.

In my Gypsy I can cruise all day long at ~80-90 kmph. Anything above that is not comfortable.

But yes, let me add that after my t-case gear ratio changes, the 'in gear' acceleration of my Gypsy is WICKED. Very very few vehicles can overtake it in the 30-80 kmph sprint in the 3rd/4th gear :-)

My Isuzu powered gypsy total smooth at 80 and beyond. I have not pushed it beyond 130 kmph. With 1000 cc engine I have pushed the vehicle to 135 kmph on Mumbai - Pune expressway, but felt uncontrollable and slowed down to 100 kmph.

Maruti Gypsy 410
Ride is smooth between 80-85.
Max speed may be 90.

My Speedo doesn’t go above 70 though.

I had to ask my friend to drive his car next to my Gypsy and watch the speedo in his Car. He told speed is 85 not 70, Till then I always thought am driving safely in 70 :D

That reminds me of the time I was running a 1.8 ISZ petrol in my Jeep. The good thing, and ONLY good thing, of that engine install was the acceleration. I kept up with my brother (in a carb esteem) in a 0 - 80 (private industrial ground), and have embarassed more than a couple of hatchbacks / C segment sedans with the 1.8.

Now that the big LC is sold here in India officially I can share that it can do 190 with as many as 11 people inside and is steady as a rock.

My CJ3B is comfortable at 70, can do 80 and possibly more but its scary to even try it :)

@DKG- B275 engine official top speed is 72 kmph max. So you mean to say you feel comfortable when your jeep is redlining?

@Dwaraka- Gypsy 1000 cc top speed is 110 kmph (tested) Your 135 kmph on express way has to do with fair amount of speedo error

@Beejay- Your CJ340 has 5.38 ratio. Mahindra classic with 4.88 ratio was tested 95 kmph true top speed. Hence your true top speed should not be more than 85-88 kmph
@sreeraj- 120 kmph is possible in 4th gear and i doubt if this is possible in 5th gear. Bolero top speed 2wd (true speed) is 125kmph in 4th gear settles at 115-118 in 5th gear

On my MM540 4wd i have achieved 90 kmph (true speed) ...matched it with Honda civic digital meter. I still could go a bit more, may be 3-5 kmph. Comfortable speed 75-80 on highway 50-60 in city. Engine noisy between 60-75, revs smoother when i cross 75. Brakes highly inadequate for emergency stops @ 70-80 kmph. May opt for Disk brake soon.

Mileage- Iam yet to check but should give me 9 kmpl in city. Tyres- 235/70 R16 HT

p.s- All the true speeds mentioned are from magazines of test drives of these vehicles in past

Great.!! So,the humming sound in your drive shaft at speeds of > 50 now rectified?

Wow didn't know that the engine is limited to that speed. Yes it does feel very comfortable, and the engine seems to do this speed effortlessly. But now that you've told me perhaps I should ease off lest I bugger up the engine.
