1955 CJ3B restoration

Hello...I am Karumbaiah & I have recently joined Team-BHP. I acquired a Willys CJ3B 1955 model Jeep 2 months back in Coorg. I have been doing research on jeeps for months now & finally picking this one. It has the original 1955 Petrol Hurricane F-Head engine, left hand drive, Trailer, 3-speed gearbox, forewheel drive new tyres & battery. The jeep is in excellent condition to drive with clear papers and insurance for both Jeep and Tailer. Now I am planning to restore few things in this jeep.

My aim is to restore it to its original status- in military look. There are a few areas that I needed help from this forum, which is the reason why I am reaching out to all of you.

Since Engine and Gearbox are in good condition and doesn’t need any overhauling for now I am planning to go for complete painting and a bit of tinkering if required.
Plan is to do this in 2 Phases and complete it by Jan 2010.
Phase1: Collecting items required for Restoration plan
  1. Collected Willys original Tail lights
  2. Round type Side mirror
  3. Jerry Can with Stand
  4. Round type right and left fenders (The one I have is DI type mudguards)
  5. Blackout lights for front grill and left fender.
  6. D hooks for front frame
Need help to get below listed items:
  1. Willys bonet with Willys Stamp on it.
  2. Willys tailgate with Willys Stamp on it.
  3. Shovel, Pick axe with clamps.
  4. Blackout-light switch.
  5. Winch (manual or electric not new one please)
  6. Gun Holder for windscreen (if not original atleast of good guage metal)
  7. Bumperretes
  8. Back seat long type (Not side ones)
  9. Scissor top frame
  10. Stearing Wheel (3 spikes)
I am in touch with people in Mysore scarp yard and Bangalore Sivajinagar scarp yard to get few of these items. Not aware of Mayapuri in Delhi and Pollachi and Pudupet in Tamilnadu which I came to know from this forum.

I went through threads from JeepCaptain, Zulu, Abhishek and others to name few. I need help from this forum to know the place where I can get these items, approximate cost of these items and contact persons. Once this is done I shall let you know my plans for Phase2. I shall be positing few pictures of my Jeep soon.

Thanks,
Karumbaiah

Hi Karumbaiah,

Immaculate Condition considering its still being used for Agri purpose. Very nicely maintained. Do post a few more pics of all angles, including engine bay. There is one CJ3B done to original military spec in bangy. Search in all the threads.

Congrats again.

Congratulations and All the very Best!

Karumbaiah,
Welcome to the club!

I envy you man!! thats one jewel you have found! 1955 CJ3B in perfect running condition and almost stock! That too with a trailer!!

I cant believe this!! I am coming to Coorg to look for one for me now!

Jokes apart. Congratulation on your find. I think its one of the best maintained stock 3B which I have ever seen. There are lots of restoration and 3B experts in this forum. So you have come to the right place.

For parts you can contact the Jeep Guru UBS sir (Uday Bhan Singh) in Calcutta or Siva (trammway) in chennai. There are many more Jeepers esp 3B owners in chennai and Delhi who can help you to source parts.

Ask for help here and I guarantee you. you will get it!

Hope to see you soon in any of the next OTR in coorg. I am from the other side of Western ghats ..Wayanad if you know that place.
All the best with your project.
JC

My answers in Block, Please have the jeep taken to Hyderabad to get most of the spares at reasonable price. Hyderabad is the mecca of vintage jeeps and replica jeeps in south india. Contact members in hyderabad fazaladil is a fellow jeeper, he had covered some jeep builds before some time. I am sure he can hook you up with people in the bussiness.

Karumbaiah, great looking CJ3B there. How's the restoration going?

Your front leafs are literally straight, I sure you are getting it recambered. The shackle kit is grease type, did the original come with silent block shackles?

Thank you all for the compliments. Phase2 restoration work is in progress:
1.Trailer painting is going on, should be completed by this weekend.
2.Jeep small tinkering work is going on. Once this is complete, removing old paint/rust will start.
Shall post few picks this weekend.

Afsar, I have no idea on Winch. I am also looking out for Winch though not the expensive one.
Samurai, I am not sure how the Spring leaf were earlier. I agree its pretty straight and needs some work done.
Fazalaliadil, Please help me out to get one Tailgate with Willys stamp as posted in my thread.
