there are some reasons which is making MM launch this vehicle in indian market:
1. MM has understood about the demand for such a vehicle in india through their extensive research and feed back though MGEs (great escapes).

- Good, but why then Thar was intended for foreign markets? (Read Pt.2)

2. Thar which was built for exports didnt get much response in the international market as MM expected, so its stock and concept being diverted to the indian buyer.

- Indians overlooking Indians

3. MM has all in stock, NGCS army surplus vehicles as IA is going for a new vehicle for its troops, CRDe engines from scorpio stable as its moved on to Mhawk.

- This cant be happening, as per some earlier posts, the chassis will be completely new based on Scorpio to fit a CRDe & also for improved handling dynamics

4. MM has burnt its fingers with Getaway as a high life style 4x4 weekend vehicle which as some one correctly said, never moved out of the showrooms.

- This is what Amricans would have liked (Selling well as PikUp), not Indians

5. MM people have seen indian hardcore 4WD offroadies building their own vehicles from ex-army disposals, so why not a factory option for these people!

- Very True but very LATE !!!

6. Indian 4WD offroad can now afford to buy a stripped down factory fitted 4WD in the shape of 550/Thar!

- Yes, but not post 6 Lakhs for basic 4X4

7. Stinger/Inspire/Major didnt sell through their customization dept despite hiring cricketers and footballers to sell it!

- This is India, we love window shopping, but spend money wisely

8. Legend was just a teaser to see how the market response to a factory fitted 4WD, true blooded offroader.

- Truly nice vehicle

9. Im running out of reasons, so please add your.

- Dabhar sir had started a wish list thread........

So basically we are getting left overs made into a kichidi from Mahindra and its going to be obnoxiously priced. Truely Indian!

I am sure it will be a very capable offroader however the timing of doing this and the pricing just is

BTW -OT - what is the AI going in for from now? The MM Axe?

Don't think any one at Mahindra would be stupid enought to rope in DC. Thinking about it has any Indian automajor used him for exterior design work?

Yes it will have to be sub 6 lakh to be attractive. Lets hope Mahindra get the pricing right otherwise this will turn into a white elephant.

PParm, you say it is confirmed. Please tell us more. Confirmed by whom? How do you know this? Please note, I am not saying you are wrong, it is just that rumors abound. The release of the new Gurkha or OM611 and the release of a new MM540 are pretty old rumors now. A couple of dead mongeese stinking up the place....mongooses?......a couple of dead, not too bright primitive mamalian carnivores stinking up the place.

UGH! is all I can say!!! What a gross contraption...

Why can't they revive something similar to the Classic? A basic offroader, no frills attached - no PS, no A/C... just a raw, brute, 4WD in the 4 lakh range. I can bet my Classic, it would sell like hot cakes.

Thar will surely be displayed at the expo but going by mahindras antics, i dont see a launch as yet.
Has it been through homologation process already?

I like the front bumper. I like the Jerry cans hanging on the tailgate. It's the stuff in between I do not care for. Look at the cat hanging down. Why in the world can't M&M route their exhaust, cat converter and silencer in such a way as to not invite rocks to smash them? This is true of their pickups, too.

Dear Ken - your comment on exhaust system is well taken, easier said than done though, maybe there are various non-technical reasons also.

Dear all - there are auto shows all over the world and cars are especially prepped up for auto shows all over the world.

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

Yeah, I know there is a heat issue and cost issues in where to route an exhaust. I do not want to be too harsh, if it had 4WD I would surely take a good long look at it. I saw a Maruti Omni catch fire just 4 hours ago going up a steep mountain road loaded with passengers. It was the cat converter. Everybody got out okay without too much damage. I feel a thread coming on....

Dear Ken - thanks for appreciating. There may be many constraints based on which decisions could be taken, a very important one being common platform approach to optimize costs by adapting aggregates across models. I hope to meet you soon, you know where.

Best regards,
