Harjeev, brother !
Why dont you get these rims powder coated / painted to MATT black.
This way you would have a cool looking ride and functionality and strength of alloys as well.

The effect would be same as on Arjun's ZUK as below.

Hey Naveen
I really like your idea on painting the Alloys to Matt black or Black powder coated. Any idea where I can get all these done??? Will it be an easy job or Ill have to go to a specialised paintshop??? Also do you have any idea on how much would it cost?

Regarding the mods, earlier before buying the vehicle I thought that Ill do all the mods that you've mentioned, but now I've decided to keep the Gypsy stock as far as possible, atleast for the time being.
Ill be using my CJ3B for the OTR's and the gypsy only for mild OTR.

Primarily the Ill keep the Gypsy for long distance travel, city driving. traveling to Corbett and other national parks (exploring wildlife etc, not OTR's) and the long distance events like Desert storm, Raid, etc. Again no pro stuff. I know people say that the suspension in the gypsy is nothing to write about but with a little compromise and better seats, it becomes quite bearable.
The only mods that I think that Ill do are a air filer replacement most likely a K&N (stock type) a good air con with proper and good quality insulation, so that the vehicle is drivable in the summers. & might be some good quality seats. (I remember how the ride quality of my MM550 changed simply after installing the Innova seats.)

Atleast thats the plan for now, but you know me, my mind and thouoght's changes faster than anyone else around me.. So who knows

Had someone a year back told me that a year down the line Ill be having 4 4x4's, I would have said that he's lost his mind. I can never have 4 vehicles in my stable. But see now.
But now I've had enough. I just want to cherish the vehicles that I have and just have fun. The year of rebuild is over.
Cheers
Welcome Twenty Ten!!!

1. Rock crawler gear ratios (Get the contacts from Arjun).
2. SPOA (a la Khan_sultan, as this would be cheaper than Coils)
3. Snorkel and free flow intake (Raj.)
4. Headers and free flow exhaust (Raj.)

This will turn your already capable ride into a formidable one.

Cheers !

Arjun's wheels were orginally shiny like yours.
This black finish was a last min. decision and done at Raj's paint shop.
I dont think it would cost so much.

You could also check with Arush.

I can appriciate you wanting a long distance cruiser in your arsenal.
Get the Snorkel anyways this aint gonna compromise long distance cruising ability.
Yeah the SPOA and rock crawler gear ratio would make it a bit edgy and strained on the highway.

Harjeev,
I hope the above statement is only partly true. I was wishing for a new detailed thread covering the rebuild of the other SWB Jeep you have.

Hey Satnam
I hope for my sake that this statement is true .

You see from my point of view, I already have a SWB, hurricane, RHD CJ3B. So even if I restore the LHD WILLYS I won't get to experience anything new apart from a change in the driving position. The LHD was more or less a kind of an investment, which now I think was a good decision. The kind of price I paid for the LHD, people are not able to get RHD CJ3B's for almost one and a half to two times the price, and this too without registration.
And the best part of my LHD is that the paperwork is all original and again 45 years old which again add value to the vehicle. I have to be really careful when I hold the RC in my hands cauz the paper sheets are itself very old and very brittle. In hindsight I think that I made the right choice and I have only to thank the people who advised me to go for this vehicle. They said if you have the money buy it, and by the time you start to restore it, it will have started to appreciate. Guess what I haven't even started thinking about restoration and the vehicle is already worth more than what I paid for!!!

I will just gather info and gain knowledge over the next couple of years and I am quite serious that I might restore the LHD after 2013 or so. Lets see!!!

Very true. I have Ford GPW 42. Even after laminating the RC few years back (20 years) to avoid tearing, but even lamination has become so old that, i will have to again laminate it. Thanks for reminding me .

hey harjeev, you got a nice ride mate,my suggestion would be to keep it as stock as possible, the most you should do is get an air filter and air con, rest leave as it is.A crawler and a long distance travel vehicle are from two different categories and are miles apart from driving behavior, what we discussed about our travel part, just keep that in mind and stick to stock gypsy and at the most get a cabin and old man emu soft suspension later on.I'm just suggesting you this keeping in mind our plans of travelling. As far as powder coating is concerned, let me know what you want to powder coat and i will get it done in my factory,i am getting new chromium based powders for mirror finish of few custom parts.let me know.

regards

mandeep

As suggested by others, I would also recommend close to stock. Do get CFL for rear. THEY ARE WORTH IT if you plan to do long drives. Do not get CFL's for front.

Agree 100% about the SPoA but not about the Crawlers. 4.16 crawler gears "primarily" work in 4WD mode and it's in 4L that they become REAL CRAWLERS. In 2WD they have a 12% reduction in gear ratio, thereby making your gear shits like a short ratio gear box.

What happens is the following to your normal driving (2WD Mode), with 4.16 crawler gears:
  • Your top speed may reduce by ~10% (I can easily do 120 for days at end without any strain)
  • Your "in-gear" acceleration will become WICKED. Believe me, when I say that you will reach 80-100 LOT LOT faster.
  • For highway driving, it will feel like a diesel torque at your fingertips for pulling away from traffic. Not may vehicles can match you for the in-gear acceleration.
  • NO perceptible drop in FE -- if driving between 80-90. I have tested this over 1000 Kms with 2 other 1.3 Gypsy's (one mpfi, one carb). All of returned the same FE of 12-12.5 kmpl.
  • If driving at 100+ then FE drops like a stone to ~10 kmpl
Cheers,

I agree with you 100% too,but i have mentioned that some major travelling would be done in this gypsy and participating in some rallies is also on the agenda,to which i think from my limited knowledge stock is a better option to compete in initially,as this vehicle wont compete in extreme category in anycase.Low ratios are always better for highway travel even if you are pulling major load(which i would be as my roof tent is getting fabricated).I have the same setup in my mind for my FJ62.anyway point well taken.

@khan & @mandeep
Thanks buddy!!! I sure have plans for mods on the gypsy or I should call it the zuki but nothing immediately.
I have just started gathering info on mods for Samurai's or the zuki for us. Will definitely be doing stuff to the vehicle but not so soon as I have to replenish the money bag too
So will just be enjoying it stock for the time being for long distance driving, OTR, city driving, etc and the works. And once I get tired of the stock setup the mods will surely take center stage
But I am surely amazed with the range of stuff that's available online for the Gypsy, which leads me to another question

The MG413 that we have in India which model does it correspond to on the Samurai

(GoSlow) Ankit has given be url of a website (thanks a lot dude) and with each passing day I think that I've made the right decision by buying this vehicle!

Removed the Alloys and moved on to Stock Rims

Hey guys a small update. The title of the post say it all. Sorry for the low quality pics a they have been taken from a mobile cam!!!

PS The weird throttle issue raised its ugly head again and apparently it only surfaces after the vehicle is driven for 50-60 kms and if switched off for 15-20 mins again becomes dormant!!!
I have explained the issue in this post

All is is happening on warm engine so the cold engine thing is ruled out!

They have serviced/ cleaned some part (the part is not there in the picture) and they referred it as Throttle Body (whatever that is) This part was removed and cleaned but no avail.

Gypsy owners/ experts need advise here
