Panagarh - The scrap vehicles graveyard of Kolkata

Panagarh, to 4wd enthusiasts, needs no introduction. Anyone in the whereabouts of West Bengal, looking for an ex-army vehicle to restore, parts of a commercial vehicle, or even classic cars that trickle in for scrapping from different parts of the state - is bound to have visited this place once.

In the course of Project Nomad, I've been keeping tab of Panagarh gypsys for some time. Today, while returning from a trip to Durgapur, I took time out to visit some prominent shops in Panagarh. Check out the pics.

There were 3 Gypsy Kings, all Carb. The first one is a 99, seemed the most mechanically intact of the lot

A 98, probably the worst of the 3 Kings here

2 ex-govt Gypsies, in very good condition. If only I found an accident Baleno/SX4 engine (and a good mech to do the transplant), these would have made a better base for Project Nomad than a Gypsy King

3 Paramilitary Gypsys, condition can be described as the stage just before trash IMHO.

The seller also had 2 Airforce Gypsys (not Kings) which were in equally bad condition.

He also had 2 MMs in fairly good condition. The 1st is the white one in the right of the 1st pic. The other is the camouflage colour MM which can be seen at the far end of this pic:

Nice pics! What about the Series 1 LR Defender? Most of the Gypsys seem to be total write-offs

Do you have some contacts in Panagarh? I need a CJ3B RHD chassis, may be I could find one if only I have a contact out there.

Patience dude. Actually my camera battery conked off right after, and the remaining photos were taken from wifey's mobile. Wait till she uploads the pics.

And FYI, a series 1 LR is just a series 1 LR. Not a Defender.

My "contacts" are the few shopowners I've met in course of visits there. Will PM you the numbers.

Aha, good question. Some general pointers.

1. All shops combined, I found at least 7-8 MM550s in decent condition. The asking price was 75K, which can be brought down by 5-10K on bargaining.

2. The 3 Gypsy Kings pictured here were the only Kings in the entire area! Apparently they are expecting a lot of Kings to come in next week. Price asked is about 1.25L (including making the car fit to be driven to Kolkata) and 15K for registration.

3. There were several army, paramilitary and civilian Gypsys available at cheap prices (60K ish). Condition was horrible!

Hi Harjeev,

Yesterday I was in Mayapuri (will tell in another thread why ;-), and saw a very old Land Rover, in good body condition parked at Jeep House. I is the first shop on the right when you enter from the CNG pump side.

Well I haven't really looked around too much. But generally Series Land Rovers (Series I & II) belonging to defunct govt departments/instituitions do crop up in different parts of the country. UBS bought one S1 ambulance (I've posted pics in another thread), so did Abhishek_d_zulu. Another S1 coming up on this very thread!

Defenders I havent seen, except for some well-kept examples belonging to wealthy individuals.

Yes. I'd personally love to pick them up. But the 1.0ltr engine is too old and underpowered. Can you get me access to a 1.6 ltr Baleno engine?

1.6 ltr Baleno engines are available in Delhi at Mayapuri. I can put you in touch with my mechanic who can help you source it but you will have to get it shipped yourself. I helped Allan source one for his mettalic blue gypsy in Mumbai. The Engines, though second hand, are in decent shape.

You will also need a Gypsy king gearbox and flywheel as the 4 speed gearbox in the 1.0L gypsy will not work properly with the 1.6L engine.

The other issue is fitting it. If you know someone who has done it before then go for it. Otherwise it can be quite difficlut. Allan with all his specialised mechanics really struggled with it.

PM me your number if you need the engine sourced.

Cheers
Ankit

Land Rover Series 1

This derelict series 1 Land Rover is lying for some time at Panagarh. No steering wheel, no transmission, no transfer case, no cosmetic parts. Nothing except the body and the engine block!

I suspect the shopkeeper is having a hard time selling it. No restorer wants to pick it up as it will involve a grounds up resto. He can't even sell it as scrap iron, as the body is Birmingham Alloy!

Another Gypsy in fairly good condition. The conversion is typical of Tea Garden Gypsys which are made into 4 doors and used as family cars of the managers.
