Found this electric Gypsy on twitter.
These retrofitted older Military Gypsies were made into electric vehicles when the IndianArmy Cell, IIT-Delhi and a start-up named Tadpole Projects, came together for this project.

I think there will be some problems with this concept.

First of all, nobody uses Gypsy as their daily commute. Gypsies are mostly used as recreational or utility vehicles and I don't think an EV fits that role due to limited range and tendency of batteries to hate laying unused for long periods of time.

Secondly, if used as an offroader, a vehicle loaded with batteries would not be of much use. I mean who would wade into a river with all that electric potential beneath the hood? Also, one would not find much of charging infrastructure in the wilderness.

In my opinion, e-Gypsy is a concept good enough to keep a few Gypsies alive so we can have them around to see and admire. But, anything beyond that would take lot of further research and development.

This thread has been a bit dormant for a while now that we have the new kid (Jimny) on the block.

Well for me, Gypsy will always have that old-world charm that no vehicle in the world can replace.

Sigh... here I'm sitting halfway around the world and the Gypsy is parked in the mountains (Shimla), all I can do for now is to look at the pictures...

So many people talk such judgemental nonsense about the ride quality of the Gypsy.
I ve just taken my stock Gypsy for a 40km ride this morning across various bit of Bangalore and the usual nonsense roads and speed breakers. I give it a run every week because the manual gearbox and soft top and no power steering and no AC gives me the pleasure of connecting with the world in a more basic way.
And in all honesty if driven the right way, the stock Gypsy with stock nylon cross ply tyres with the recommended 20PSI actually gives a more comfortable ride than the SWB Thar. The longer wheelbase helps in managing speed breakers much better.
It is a great vehicle.
And the new Jimny definitely carries that imprinted DNA stamp which take this character forward.
