Re: Maruti Gypsy Pictures

Inspired by Shankar.balan's K&N filter, I searched AMAZON.IN and found the Samurai/Jimny model, E-2553, an exact match for Gypsy. Got it and fitted today, but after being shocked on reading "OIL BEFORE USE" on the top. So found some red leftover MG 20W40 engine oil from IBP, and applied it with a paint brush. Hope the engine does not foul up and start smoking !

At 7990/- the filter, supposed to last 50,000 plus miles, does not inspire much confidence, specially when you read that the wire mesh holding the filtering medium is of aluminium. Our old Jeep & Jonga air cleaners were made entirely of steel wire mesh, and generally did not need replacing. And they were washed/cleaned in kerosene or motor spirit, and ran in an oil bath. But K&N has a special kit for cleaning and re-oiling, equally expensive!

I hope the whole thing will be worth it, performance wise. Do not care much for the slightly more noise, as the engine breathes better.

PS : Just found that the same filter is available from SWASTIK FABS for 6000/- ! Feel like shooting myself!

I was just having this discussion on air filters with my trusted mechanic aka guru. I frankly asked about using KN air filter. His words -" of course it does better, it doesn't restrict anything at all in the air channel. The engine will be gone very soon, it's washable but doesn't filter much"
I don't know if anyone had done a engine condition check after a long time use but I would take his word as he is one of the regular rally mechanic for the last 20 years or so.
Btw would like to hear from you how gypsy is fairing with the new air filter. I see you from Howrah, I am just on the opposite bank of the river, would be good if we can catch up.

Even I was surprised to peer inside the filter and see the gaps between folds in the element, and was thinking along the same lines as your mechanic.
Hoping less than rally-dust conditions do not ruin my engine so soon, as K&N is more than 10X costly, compared to the standard.

Performance is better, as can be imagined with less restrictions on airflow. Amazed to find such increase in power without any internal mods. Can climb flyovers in 5th gear if speed not less than 50 kmph, in 4th can come down to 20+kmph and increase speed without changing down (previously impossible in such a wimpy-engined vehicle).

Sure we can catch up someday !

Am in the same boat - switched to K&N last year. Needless to say, the performance has improved significantly and the peppy Gypsy is much more fun to drive now! Given that the filter is not an "open" one but placed inside the housing, I do not see dust ingress being a big issue, unless of course, you drive regularly in very dusty conditions. Let's see how it goes.

Re: Maruti Gypsy Pictures

Yes, cool_dube, I chose the more expensive E-2553 instead of the racy looking open types so that it stays inside the filter box for protection (its own plus the engine's !). Bu did you oil it before installing, as the instruction on the body said ? If so, with what oil, and how ?

Nope, I did not. I got it installed at a FNG and I was told that it would need an "oil bath" after a year/10,000 kms (which is essentially the frequency for a normal filter change).

Re: Maruti Gypsy Pictures

Got a whatsapp forward that says Bangalore police department Gypsies above 2000 models are being auctioned tomorrow in Mysore road depot. Not a validated info, but if some Gypsy lover wants to check this info, it may be worth it

Re: Maruti Gypsy Pictures

These pictures are shared by my friend Razzani (an avid off-roader) in Wayanad, Kerala - his white Gypsy in the various hinterlands of picturesque Wayanad, an off-roading paradise too.

I was lucky to have taken this beast to few unexplored greensward trails there on few occasions. And each time I come back with the wanderlust again on those beautiful terrains!
