Re: Hunt for MM540 ends here……

Nice the jeep has come out nice. The color is really suiting the machine.

Is there any plans to upgrade the rims and tyres? We have become so accustomed to seeing these jeep with some chunky rubbers that in such specification something seems to be amiss.

Re: Hunt for MM540 ends here……

Explain circumstances more accurately please? Is it slipping from 4wd to 2wd? High to low? Or is the main GB slipping gears. All have different causes, so please eloborate.

To save you some time for starting mechanical work - IF...

1) Your issue is Tcase slipping from 4wd TO 2wd, then only Tcase can be brought down from Jeep and work can be done in it. Mostly the largest gear (dont know the name) inside it wears out its teeth - REASON - daily jeepers in hillstations dont have the time and patience to STOP the Jeep and AT 0KMPH engage the 4wd lever - they just move on in 2nd gear, approach the estate mud road at 25-40Kmph, and PLONK in the 4wd lever like SOTF (Jeep Tcase isnt designed for such use)...

Hi Santosh,

Thanks for the replay,
Mine is 96 model jeep which has single lever for engaging into 4wd mode.

In detail what happens is ..

If i engage into 4wd mode by shifting it down and drive slowly it comes back to normal position, essentially means that it is coming back to 2wd drive mode in 3-4 seconds,I have to hold the gear lever to keep the vehicle in 4wd mode.Same thing applies to 4wd low also it comes back to neutral in few seconds.

Re: Hunt for MM540 ends here……

Ok, should be a elementary fix for your mechanic. Dont ask him to refit with used-but-good-looking gears, get brand new ones from a spares dealer. OE ones in MM boxes will last long but cost you a bomb, you can settle for 'gajanana' brand ones (avbl in south india), they will cost&last 50% of MM ones... (IIRC MM boxed ones are spicer, MSL ones...)

Suji,
It is better to have a look at the selector assembly which can be checked without opening the gearbox Then take a decision.

Suresh
I would go with this advise. To me it sounds as the selector assembly nothing else. At least I would want to make sure that it is working normally before I tore into the gearbox.

Re: Hunt for MM540 ends here……

I am planning to change my diff ratio to 4.27 from 4.88 because these days I use my Jeep as a highway cruiser.
Can any one help me to source a used crown and pinion(ratio - 4.27)? Since my vehicle is 4wd I am looking for both front and back.

Thanks
Siju

Contact Jagan Muvattupuza, if in Kerala.

Or any Scrap Yard (Bangalore, Mysore, Mettupalayam etc.. ) will give you 47/11 crown pinion. Its available in plenty.
