Just a quick question! Do the vibrations from the vehicle drastically reduce when your jeep has passengers in the rear? Please ask Gopal to check if this happens.

A simple suggestion .

A+B=C.
A plus B should be C always. It can't be some time C or may be C. So please relax and do systematic approach to the problem,rather than trying this and that.I believe its a stock Petrol CJ3B so kindly check for all the mountings of Engine,GB,TC,PS etc and make sure all are the parts as per the OEM specifications.

In DwArF, i dont have an issue while decelerating from high speed now, after this temp spacers. Yes before the spacer and gb build it was huge. I did 70 on odo and let go, absolutely clean deceleration, till it hits say 20-25 kmph when the vibrations starts.

Joints are brand new M&M OE stuff.

Not really, if so i would also have suspected the rear spring camber?

I unfortunately dont have access to OE spec documentation with me, one of the main reason why all these confusions happen. Good thing i get to learn and others reading this thread also. Mounts are all aok, but dont ask me if its OE or not, i have no clue or reference.

Hi Jaggu,

It is very easy to check of the prop-shaft is in Phase.

1) Remove the Prop-Shaft
2) Place opposing UJ Bearing Caps on a Table/Floor/Flat Surface.
3) The Prop-Shaft will lie parallel to the Floor/Table without tipping over to any one side.

Thanks Arka, really helpful and simple.

Diff was completely overhauled with check on bearings, clearances etc. As i mentioned earlier, this issue is NOT a new one. It has reduced after current work, but it was there from day 1.

Yes Arka that is where we are starting now, any idea if a new one is available in Chennai? If need be?

Ahh that gives me some ideas, for worst case scenario Just a doubt, how is this achieved?

Someone told me to select an appropriate shaft from another model and shorten the length to achieve the desired results. But yes workmanship matters and now we will hear lots of flack from the purists!

But for academic purpose, like to know the trick.

Hi Jaggu,

The TRICK!!!!!!I give it to a pro who is makes prop-shafts for Ashok Leyland.

1) Get the CJ3B Size Yoke and Splined Yoke.

2) Get SEAMLESS Tubing from the industrial Estate and mention is is for a Prop Shaft.

Match the Length, OD & ID (OD-ID = Thickness of the tube).

Check the OD of the Yoke (neck which will go inside the Tube).

Fix the Yoke and Splined Yoke at either ends of the tube, and align them in phase then mark the tube at 90Degrees and yokes for alignment.(4 Marks on each end of the tube.

Check the alignment.

Spot weld the Tube and Yoke at the 4 Alignment Marks.

Spot weld the Tube and Splined Yoke at the 4 Alignment Marks.

Check the Alignment.

Weld the Yoke and let it cool down completely.

Check the Alignment.

Weld the Splined Yoke and let it cool down completely.

If need be dynamically balance the Prop-Shaft.

Attach the Felt Seal on the Splined Yoke.

Fit the UJ's .

Grease the Splined Yoke.

Check the Alignment & Prop-Shaft in Phase.

Fit in the vehicle.

Arka, good to know that you get your own propeller shaft made, why do you do that if it is readily available in the first place?

I'm running JUGAAD Prop-Shafts on My MM540XD since 2009 Jan.

The ones readily available are expensive 5-8K IIRC, and also the experiment of making your own Prop-Shaft

The JUGAAD Prop-Shafts, each cost 3500( MSL Parts Yoke & Splined Yoke) + Rs300-500 for the Tube and Welding.

The Dynamic Balancing is done in a Lathe with the Spline Yoke (Female Splines Removed/Disconnected) and rotated, and checked if they are straight. To check if the Principle Inertia Axis and Geometric Centre Line coincide.

If there is a unbalance small metal weights (rectangular strips) are added to the Prop-Shaft. I have seen this only on Larger Prop-Shafts (Trucks)

Arka, "generally" if there are no serious issues, propeller shafts lasts a long time, only thing is, get the serviceable (propeller shaft kit) parts attended. Yes, the tube must be in good shape.

Our test vehicles have run more than 2 lakh kms without any change in behavior of the propeller shafts, I believe your daily running is not much right? But still it justifies your reasoning.

Arka, there are 2 things when it comes to propeller shafts:-

a) Runout
b) Imbalance

What you have mentioned above is "truing" or checking runouts which can be easily done on a lathe & dial gauge setup.

This is the second most important part- "Imbalance". Can you share how this is done? How do they locate regions of high / low mass?

Off late I have seen a few incidents of propeller shaft twisting, does it have any connections? Have a look:-

Arka thanks for posting the details. Superb info!!! but i will just keep it for academic knowledge now. Not because i doubt it, BUT in BLR i don't think i have any reasonably good source to carry out the job. But a word of caution, if i get stuck i will definitely trouble you
