Team-BHP - Taking the Plunge, bought an MM540DP. EDIT : Now with 14B!

Guys,

Would appreciate some responses to the below:
1) Been on the lookout for a 4x4 transfer case + front differential and have been told Rs 5,500 for just the transfer case. And oddly 20k for the rest! For used parts, what is the typical price range? Anyone knows a place where I could source it from? Delhi? Mumbai?
2) Also, was told that I may require a change of the rear differential axle also. Why exactly is this required?

For 6.00x16 Tires 4.5E wheel rim is recommended and for 235/70R16 it is 6.5J. Vinod i believe is running his 235 on smaller rims without any major issues.

My two cents.

1. Dont go for a PS immediately. Drive the vehicle for around 1000 kms and then you can decide. I drive a 1996 CL340DP 4WD (MM Classic) for the last 4 years and never felt the need for a PS. You would start loving the beast as it is in due course of time.

2. Dont go for a too much of a upsize in tyres. One of my friend had a 245 and there was difficulty in steep turnings. So you need to check and then upgrade it. My suggestion is 225/75/R15.

About the tyres, still not sure as with a limited budget, alloys are out and so need a reasonably cheap steel rim option to go with 235s. Don't plan to go over 235s for sure.

On a serious note, did you fit the 235s on 4.5x16 rims? I believe the min size is at least 6 size rims.

IMHO I dont think 235 on 4.5 size rim is a wise idea... For a smooth and safe ride for 235 you need atleast a 6 size rim. While changing the rim and tyres, please be careful about the backspacing. For off-roading purposes, its better to have a steel rim.

Finally found a 4x4 package from a fairly new Marshal (transfer case, gb, front and rear differential) which I will swap with the existing 2wd setup in my 540. Not sure yet if everything fits seamlessly but thats something we'll figure out on Monday when we have a look at it!

Pretty excited now!! Finally things shaping up!!

i hope you know that 4x4 is just a name used by JK. This tire has nothing to do with a 4wd. As you are buying a new one, please go for a better ones.

Yes sir I understand that much at least! I was just giving the exact brand name.

Unfortunately, I am buying slightly used ones that were taken off after being used on a Gypsy along with the FC Rims. Both tyres and rims have been thoroughly checked and look good. The thing is that I might go in for alloys and good tyres once I know how much I'll be using it offroad and onroad. I can't stand the tyres that are currently on the jeep so decided on them. Also its a good complete set of 5 that should see me through till the time I can afford better ones!

Congrats for your purchase. First get into solving whatever little niggles and problems lie in the vehicle, before you go adding a PS. I would not recommend any trial and error method. Go through various threads in the 4X4 section and im sure you will find all your answers. Have fun.

Hi guys,

Last week or so me and a friend from JeepThrills, Yograjsinh have been doing the groundwork for the 4wd conversion. Found a guy with a Marshal who's ready to exchange the crown jewels of the 4x4 Marshall with my 540 DP.

Currently work is in progress and I'll be able to update more once I have a look at it tomorrow.
First change that we had to do were:
1) Change the rear differential from a left offset to a right offset differential to bring it in line with the output of the transfer case.
2) Currently work is in progress on getting the previously unused transfer case into perfect working order which required a change of a few bearings, "Major kit" and a few more parts.

Tomorrow I'll be able to post some pics and also give an update on the progress of the work. Can't wait to have a uncastrated vehicle soon!
