The Escudo/Sidekick is nothing but the Grand Vitara. Pls. refer to the following wiki link.

I have also read somewhere that MSIL is also thinking of launching the GV with a diesel engine in 2011. Can someone confirm this.

Though these 'concept' interiors would never make it to a production vehicle, at least not in India!

Am more worried about the price, if its diesel and has 4 doors coming from MUL (esp since they know Thar is at 7.3 OTR), pricing would be a HUGE disappointment! Good thing is from my perspective i can make it my dual purpose primary vehicle

God, this has confused me more. I had almost made up my mind on buying a gypsy ST while retaining my 5 yr old baleno, and here i see jimny launch thread. what do you say guys. I think I should wait, but how long is the question

Wait for another year at least. Maruti is generally very tight lipped about their plans. If it doesn't happen in 2011, then we all can move on.

Maruti has been in the news for some time now and has been planning to launch the much-awaited Maruti Jimny, an entry-level SUV. The Jimny will be launched to phase out the Gypsy.

The SUV will be positioned between the Gypsy and the Grand Vitara and will have to compete with market leaders Mahindra. The expected entry-level Jimny will be launched with a 1.5 litre multi-jet diesel engine.

I hope they won't lose the 4x4 or short wheelbase to tailor it to Indian requirement. That is biggest fear with Jimny's Indian avataar.

I'll take this news with well a bowl of salt.
The launch of Jimny is been speculated for years now. But if the news is true, Maruti will have another winner in it's stable.

Thank you Parm for this good news.I already decided to wait for V2 and end of the day I can decide one from 2 4x4s so I think its worth waiting for Diesel Jimny.Its good to see this Entry level 4x4 market is getting hot,really good for Budget 4x4 lovers like me

I just had a brief chat with a senior person at Maruti. According to him, there are plans for introducing Jimny in Indian market, but the timelines are not yet clear.
If we were to believe the above news report, a few test mules would have been spotted by now.

Hmmm.....I suppose Suzuki could sell the old Jimny dies to Maruti as they launch their new version in the rest of the world, ala Toyota to Sonalika on the Qualis.

I take this with a pinch of salt as there is no Fiat 1.5L MJD!

They might have been refering to the Renault K9K 1.5L Turbo-Diesel.
