Wow...just give me this chassis, I will mate it with the existing Gypsy body. The solid-axle-coilspring combo is deadly. I dont like the car-like-body finish of the Jimny.

it would have been better if they offered a gypsy with a SWB.. a SX4/1.3 DDIS engine and coil over suspension. Optional AC and PS to go with that. MS already have the design and infrastructure for the gypsy.. they just need to modify a little bit. I honestly think the jimny won't sell here. even the army won't buy anything like that.

Hope they start using VW diesels. For lot of people a Jeep is a Jeep, that is, not ready to buy one because of reliability issues, interiors, comfort etc. This could be a good alternative.

We have both models in South Africa, Thar and Jimny - Although both is excellent 4x4 and both 2 door vehicles, You cant really compare the two vehicles. The Thar is a Jeep like "toy" vehicle - rough and very basic. Where the Jimney is more a small SUV and much more refined than the Thar.
For a daily transporter, mom`s taxi, work - the Jimney is great. But the Thar is the rough weekend mean machine!

What is the engine specs of the Jimny sold in SA?

Engine Capacity / HP / Torque / Axle ratio / OE tyre size / GC / Other features

Then we can really know if it's a Thar killer. Otherwise it will be like all those iPhone killers that are released each quarter.

It will take a lot for the poor Jimmy/jimny to take on the 2.6crde 4x4 mammoth the 'THAR'! Jimmy/Jimny is a more of a upgrade from Gypsy but THAR is not just a 4x4 but its a brand new segment in itself for me!!! Only the dying Gurkha fits into the THAR's segment.

^^ Its has a 2.5L engine and not a 2.6L, the power and torque bands are different.

first of all its J I M N Y and not JIMMY!

second, is it a good idea to compare Jimny with Thar?

the best reply has been from Wild_card, because in SA both the vehicles are sold and he has summed it up very nicely.

@Dan, i agree that with MASS under its belt, there will be a lot of people going for Jimny over Thar.

the fit and finish of Jimny will score over Thar in terms of quality product.

im sure Maruti will launch Jimny in 1.3 or 1.2 K series 90+ bhp PETROL engine (new 2011 swift is coming with a 1.2 K series 90+ bhp).

the sales charts will light up if maruti offers Jimny in Diesel engine also! i would pay 5-6 lakhs for a Jimny over Rio anyday!

@Spike, i think MM should offer some good value for money in Thar's pricing!

maruti jimmy vs premiere rio

edit: guru dont expect same reliability and offroadibility as your gypsy
Jimny against Rio! (Japanese relaibility Vs Chinese clone)

come on allan, you chose to drive a Gypsy in the NDTV 'flight of the Hawk' over a jeep...any reasons for that choice?

Aren't you the thread starter? didn't you name it Beware Thar?

EDIT: Parm, please use Edit button rather than posting back to back posts.

And Allan is right. The only competition currently is Rio (although i don't know if it as available in 4x4); whether made in china or patiala doesn't matter. It's the segment that is being spoken about.

oh yes, im the thread starter and i did name it 'Thar Beware' and all i have done is asked the question after reading the 32 replies since i started the thread, that is it fair to compare the two?

Jimny's only competion is Rio in terms of what? quality, A.S.S, relaibility, brand? Rio is a product of bygone era (like the 20 year old pajero sold in india)!

made in china or patiala doesnt matter to you, but for me it does makes a difference, huge difference!

lets enjoy the thread my respected forum member.

Cars are usually classified into segments eg: A, C, D, etc irrespective of where they are made.

In terms of Quality, Reliability, A.S.S, etc, i'm still to here good things about Mahindra as well. Sorry Spikey & BD, nothing against M&M, just making a point.

We have mahindras in our family, both scorpios, 5yr (65k kms) and 8yrs (92k kms), no issues at all since purchased, its tank solid. The build quality is exemplary and A.S.S has been fantastic too. Lets not generalize here...it tends to show great present day companies in bad light! Having said that, there isnt one company that has all its customers rating it 10/10!!!
