MG413 W is being discountinued by Maruti because of a big reason nobody talked here in this forum, Indian Army is evaluating new 4x4 vehicles which we have somewhere on this forum.

Jimny is too small and doesnt fit the requirments of Indian army, they want vehicles like M&M AXE or LR Defender.

M&M has tied up with an israeli company to build land defence equipment (factory in Faridabad), so is TATA going to bring in expertise from LR for indian army in the form of Defender, and LR has 50+ years of experience in supplying 4x4 vehicles to armies around the world

Maruti is not a a small car/vehicle manufacturers and doesnt have military expertise and neither they have any vehicle which is on par with M&M AXE or LR Defender.

internal security forces are shifting to diesel vehicles and Gypsy stands no where among the competition it faces from M&M and TATA vehicles in this respect.

people must have read about M&M Marksman, which is a scorpio based bullet proof vehicle bought by various police depts in india, introduced after mumbai 26/11 attacks.

has anyone see the last defence expo held in delhi? with so many players for indian army and security forces requirments for 500kg-1 ton 4x4 vehicles, maruti makes just a light weight gypsy which topples over by a small hand grenade blast force!

maruti doesnt even offer a OEM armoured/bullet proof gypsy, its an after market job done by few specialists!

so a small 2 door jimny perfectly fits for civillians and with a sub 6 Lakh price tag and i sure the new segment created by the launch of Rio needs more polished and better vehicle like Jimny!

Really?
Yes, in terms of creature comforts it beats the Jurrassic relic hollow.
But I wonder if the SWB Jimny can really be compared against the LWB Gypsy.
The correct comparison would be against a SWB Samurai.
In that context what makes you think it will outperform the older version hands down considering
that the only major difference between the two is the way the front axle is suspended.
Think about it.

Anyone knows what model this is ? Looks like a Gypsy to me.
It is a Suzuki Samurai, modified with an Isuzu diesel engine. Quoting the owner below :

@parm because we bought the rights to manufacture it here in India along with the stampings and everything. Maruti will have to do the same for the Jimny now and now that I think about it, seems less likely that they will.

Forget the Jimny GS which would be an all new one. Cant these guys spruce up the Gypsy Itself for the time being. Damn You MUL for offering such an old world 4x4 to India.

Gypsy will be phased out in Indian Defense sector soon, with M & M Axe and LR coming in. Gypsy is mountain goat, means light, swift and easy in high altitudes. But not carrier for troups and combat vehicle.

Defense need more sturdy, carrier and combat vehicle which are driven by diesel. Jimny is SUV, not meant for defense functions.

MUL may surely succeed in Jimny more than in Gypsy because of look, comfort and sporty features. A clear competition for high priced SUVs presently in the country. Even at Rs. 6 - 7 lakhs, it's worth going for (if priced in this range).

Desmosedici,

As for sprucing present gypsy, MUL has already created a brand fit for fauj and police vehicle. Body shell is the same they offered in 1986-87. I can say this is the only vehicle in the country which has not undergone change in avatar, come what may. Small per cent of auto enthusiasts like the design and capabilities.

It's too late, but even if MUL tries to make visible changes and showcase, gypsy will not attract any more interest.

Where as, Jimny will because it's maiden launch with all features of true SUV with 4 WD.

I think a jimny with diesel engine would really be nice vehicle. I hope that Maruti introduces this car. Would be a boon for Indian roads.

With Maruti slowly having its 50% small car market share eroded by other players, their focus now will solely be on this segment . The A star and estilo not selling too well, new swift next year and a replacement for an M800(by downgrading the current alto and bringing in another small car to take the altos place) keeping MUL busy for most part of 2011 i seriously doubt that the Jimny will make it to india any time soon if ever.

There could be a small chance that as MUL developes the RIII platform, they might decide to include a compact SUV on that platform too. But since the RIII is being developed on the swift/ritz platform we will most likely only get a soft off roader. So guys a true Gypsy king replacement is nowhere to be seen in the short to medium term. Sad but true unfortunately in my humble opinion.

Happy motoring
