Just got off the phone with my contact at MUL. According to this person, there are no immediate plans for Jimny.
He did not categorically deny it, so we can expect a this car to hit the roads in 2011.

a longer wheelbase 4 door version with a diesel engine will do wonders at 5.5-6 L, I wish. a two door petrol in India will not see numbers for MUL

Guys, right from day, One, I have been saying that this vehicle doesn't not make economic sense for Maruthi. Maruthi has no interest in the 4x4 market. If they did, there is a few basic things that can be done to gypsy which will make it sell in much higher numbers.

A few members hope that this will be launched and some of them try to make their dreams come true on this forum. Basically if you think rationally, the Jimny ain't happening. Just to repeat my earlier arguments:

1) The volumes won't justify CKD and setting up an assembly line for it.
2) The CBU route will end up making the vehicle too expensive.
3) Maruthi is really not interested in the 4x4 game. If you don't believe me, walk to your nearest big maruthi dealer and try to book a Gypsy 4x4.

Agree with 4X4 Addict. Maruti is more into volumes and a Jimny 4x4 wont make any sense to be added to their existing portfolio.

Friends,
Each time I see this post afresh, I think, "there now there must be some news about its launch". Only to find that the same topic continue, that it is not so and a general consensus among members that it is not feasible ect. for MUL and then the little birdie also affirms it or otherwise.
Not worth checking this thread for the 'no news' and conclusions.
Regards,

Maruti to develop a new mini-suv for India

The news is formally out, Maruti is developing a new mini-suv for India. Read the following link.

The Hindu Business Line : Mini-SUV to lead Maruti's new launches over next 2 years

Not sure if this is a new platform or will be based on the existing Jimny platform.

It will be a wait and watch for the shape, specifications and the prices.

Mods : Request you to reactivate the Jimny thread and move my post.

Re: Jimny expected in 2011

The article states Maruti source saying "four door diesel SUV". So I guess it will be an inhouse modification of the Jimny, not the jimny in real sense.

Re: Jimny expected in 2011

Re: Jimny expected in 2011

What Premier Rio started, would be taken to the next level by Maruti.

i would like to see how maruti make 4 doors out of the current 2 door Jimny?

i dont want to see a 4 door vehicle made out of Gypsy Petrol. Diesel Gypsy, yes!

maruti knows how good the Gypsy would be if its offered in a diesel version with 4 doors, PS and AC (Thar Killer?) to the civillians.

let the good times begin!

Re: Jimny expected in 2011

I somehow cannot digest the image of a 4 door Jimny with current shape as base! But yes good move, 4 door, 4x4, AC, PS, MUL = Success if its priced right. And hope they do it with the 1.5-1.6 liter diesel engine and NOT our national diesel engine (1.3DDiS)

Re: Jimny expected in 2011

Jimny looks are not that great, they should bring something in the Sidekick/Escudo lines
