My Gypsy - The Hornet

After reading all the build threads I thought I'd post my own thread of the build of my Gypsy hereafter named the Hornet (a tribute to Bruce Lee - The Green Hornet)
Here are some pics of my Gypsy when I first bought it

It is a '97 Gypsy King, with a BRC LPG kit. It had a set of new 205/60R15 tyres - yes the previous owner had made it into a car rather than a 4X4!!
ohh yeah did I mention that I got the front drive shaft a week after I bought the gypsy??!!

My first order of business was to change the tyres. Here is a comparison between the tyres.

The next change was to remove the LPG kit - did not find any actual benefit.
Mileage with petrol - 11 KMPL - Cost Rs 50
Mileage with LPG - 7 KMPL - Cost Rs 30
And the engine sounded like there was sandpaper lining in it!!

After removing the LPG kit, I had to change the carb as the old one was spoilt by the LPG.
Ended up with an 800's Mikuni carb - No complaints now

Then the next change was to the top - removed the full soft top and made a cabin soft top.
The bumper was also removed to be repainted - but ended up not putting it back as I liked the look

1. Please post some pics of Snorkel fitting (under the hood pics)
2. Snorkel head make?

Looks like you have made some nice mods to this especially the lockers. For you Gypsy guys, is there any way you can coax another 10-20 horsepower out of the OE motor relatively painlessly....e.g. under a lakh?

A Fuel Injected engine would move the power from 65bhp to 85bhp.

Hey Ajay,
Lovely thread!
Nice to read about Hornet being revived.
I loved the idea of getting the snorkel pipe out of the left side-indicator light.
So, how does hornet feel with the new mods?
@Ken: Would you think even the MPFI version would feel under powered up there?

Saar - my first intention was to bring the hornet back to stock, this took me almost a year. Its only now that I have added the lockers and snorkel, and I intend to use it like this before more performance mods

The credit for the snorkel design must go to a friend from Sakleshpur - I guess its his design which he has used for all his Gypsy's and also he got it done for me.

The lockers make the Hornet's steering a little tight and the locker release in sharp curves is particularly annoying (its a little loud) but on the trail its AMAZING!!!
Had gone to Chikmagalur (sorry no pics - was too busy driving) and was using 2hi in lotsa places where others were using 4hi

Pics will take a little time Krishna - Vehicle is parked up at home and my camera is not very good
Snorkel head is a high quality FRP copy of Safari

Regarding the power, I would rather spend money on crawling gears as they will end up increasing the torque.
This is my thought, but given a choice between Power and Torque, I would choose the latter.
Dont think I have mentioned earlier but I got a FFE with the vehicle
