I have been scouting around for ages now to find a good fabrication shop who can make roll cages. Sad to say that until today I still haven't found a single place in Kerala to make proper rally/offroad spec Roll Cages. :Frustrati

But thanks to one of my dearest friend who came forward to help me with getting the roll cage done.

Now the Defender is send to Coimbatore for the getting all the body armor done.

Some more pics of the trip from Cochin to Coimbatore.

The way the restoration is going, I think by the time I complete restoring, My Defender will travel all the states in India. lol:

Here is the list of states traveled by My Defender since I bought it.
  1. Sikkim
  2. West Bengal
  3. Uttar Pradesh
  4. Bihar
  5. Delhi
  6. Madhya Pradesh
  7. Rajastan
  8. Maharastra
  9. Andhra Pradesh
  10. Tamil Nadu
  11. Kerala
    & Counting...

Just to give an idea about what I am planning to do now.

Some Roll Cage pics from web.

These are some sample pics. My Idea is to have a combination of both the below designs. I mean an External roll cage with a bolt on Roof Carrier. Not Aluminium but steel.

Shibu, will it be pipe bending or cut and bend? What size pipe are you planning? Remember, the size of your pipe will determine the weight of the total structure and hence its cumulative effect on the vehicle. Few bends will be difficult through pipe bending.

Spike

looks promising ,( the first pic. )

I am still stuck between a roll cage & a roof rack ( or both combined ) for my Landy . yet not able to decide ( a roof rack is lying with me , for an year , presented by a late landy owner friend ) :Frustrati

Anyway, not in favour of a roof rack ( heavy type ) for landy as it will increase the roll .

Sudarshan

Friends,
Just a quick update.
The External Roll cage work is now progressing. But I am doing it slow.

The reason why I slowed it is..Initially I had plans to take the Defender to my forthcoming Himalayan Expedition. But then I decided to do that next year and this year I am taking my 2WD SLX Bolero DI Turbo for the trip.

I have one one pic of the WIP. Will post more pics as I receive them from my dear friend who is helping me to get this done.

Dear SirAlec, Yes I have got new ( slightly used) fender flares. It has reached India. Will be installing them soon.

Shibu,

Nice exo-skeleton.

With Rohan it is bound to come out classy.
Just one thing, the horizontal pipe over the rear slim glass should not have covered it. Since your full welds are not done yet you still can lower it by 4 inches.

Looking forward to the build stages.
Regards,

Shibu

A roll cage fixed to the aluminum body is not going to be of much use in a situation where you need it.

You need the roll cage to be attached to the chassis or at the very least to the chassis outriggers. I'm sure you know this already, just a reminder not to rely on this particular cage to save you from a roll.

Typically the Series/Defender roll-cages tend to go from the outside into the interior from where they are mounted onto the chassis/outrigger.

Beautiful!
And I agree with Mr. Fazal - try to lower the 2nd horizontal bar.

I suppose you'll be adding another horizontal bar under the windscreen too.

I know Steer is speaking out of experience. See if you can modify your Roll Cage.

Since you are workig towards a a reliable Defender, you might go this extra mile as well

Best Regards and Drive/Ride Safe

It has been over a year and a half since your last update on this, Shibu. Look forward to seeing more of the beast. Also, did you take note of what Steeroid mentioned?

Hi Jeepcaptain,
Looks it has been a long time since you updated this thread.. I was just reading the story right from the beginning and sad that the thread came to an abrupt pause. Kindly update how the defender looks and rides now.
