Great scoop, but where exactly is the Thar sticker? For that matter any sticker apart from QC and PUC Me guess this is for replacing Major for the rural market and hence the DI.

Question is how difficult it is to convert one of these into 4x4?

Still SWB's rules!

EDIT: I meant all this MWB are pbhhht!

What time were you at the India Garage Showroom? And why not say which showroom it was in? Is there a protocol?

I went there to pick up some stuff for a DIY servicing of my Bolero.

Saw this white one sitting in a corner. For a moment I thought this is it... Then looked below the front axle. Damn 4x2 so this is not it. Asked some guy clicking pictures of an about to be delivered Scorpio.

Me: Is this the THAR?
MM Guy 1: What?
Me: That one, is it the THAR?
MM Guy 1: No its a Mahindra Jeep.
Me: uh what?? Oh ok. What's it called?
MM Guy1 to MM Guy2: What is the name of that?
MM Guy 2: Its a Mahindra Jeep, new one.
Me:
MM Guy 1: No idea sir, you can ask inside.

Was in a hurry so didnt bother asking inside.

I took a video though have a look:

Good catch. Can you please let me know if the steering box is located in the front behind the bumper or in the engine bay?

Should be cheap as well!
It does have the NGCS. They stopped manufacturing the older chasis. Secondly if you look at the leafsprings, it has the wide leaf springs.

Price should be about the same as the Major..

What chassis does this have, same as Major? We know Thar is supposed to have Scorpio chassis.

AFAIK this will not come in 4x4 to keep it from eating into Thar territory. How many you would honestly buy a Thar if this came with full floating axles and 4x4? (only talking to serious mud pluggers...)

I'd get this, drop in military spec axles, 4x4, wheels and go to town (or outside it!)

Only thing to confirm is if this really has the NGCS chassis underneath. IN which case this is a great buy for someone who wants solid axles in front and rear for off-roading. Buy one of these, drop in mil-spec axles and a 4wd transfer case, gearbox. You have modern body, engine and tried and tested drivetrain and the NGCS chassis!

Should be cheap as well!
Hi Guru,

Since most of the stuff is already in place we just need to do the following on a 4WD THAR MDI

57" OKBJ 4.55:1 or 4.88:1 Lockers
53" FFRA 4.55:1 or 4.88:1 Lockers
Bilstein Shock Absorbers
32/33 inch Skinny Tyres
PS Conversion.
6-Point Roll-Cage

Pricing I guess the 4WD Thar MDI will not be more than 6-6.25L on road.

Regards,

Arka

this jeep needs only 2 big parts like TC & front OKBJ for basic 4x4 action.

for people like me on limited budget the added components like lockers & big tyres can be added later as we get more power *M*. (money lol)

i will contact our Mahindra dealer for more info.

EDIT

This will be available in 4WD. It is a completely different animal from Thar CRDe except for the sheet metal. Chasis & Power train is completely different.

Thar MDI
MDI3200TC Engine
NGT520 with T18 Transfer CAse
NGCS Chasis
51 Inch Track

The 4x4 version of Thar MDI won't compete with the Thar CRDe as the Thar CRDe will be priced much higher and targeted at a different client base. The Thar MDI 4x4 is targeted at the Major, Invader buyers.

As Arka pointed out we only need to add 57 track from the NGCS 550s that will hit Mayapuri in a year or so, upgrade tires, FFRA and you have a great solid axle 4WD.
