Re: Mahindra Thar MDi Thread (more pics at page 24)

Hi Guys

Let's look at Mahindra's engines

before 80s - F head Hurricane - 72 BHP
80s - Internatioanl harvester diesel - 35 - 38 BHP @ 1750 rpm
- Also Simpsons S 4 - in FJ cabs
late 80s - Peugeot XDP - 4.90 - 2112 cc - 62 BHP
90s - XD3 - 75 BHP - 2350 CC
2000s - 2.6 liter scorpio engine (not sure if it is a bored out XD3)
Mid 2000 - late 2000 - 2.5 liter M Eagle and 2.2 liter M hawk

My doubt here is

Mahindra has a nissan engine (inherited from the cabstar days). And now there is this MDI engine which is coming fitted on many models. Is the MDI, a totally new engine or a reworked version of any of the above??

Second - What is the Cubic capacity and power of the cabstar engine? can a reworked version of that engine be put to any good use

Third - Is the 2.5 M Eagle, a sized down version of the 2.6 or a rebored XD3???

Simply put, Mahindra seems to have too many engines in the 2- 2.6 liter category, is it really necessary to have too many similar specced engines?

These doubts had been bugging me for long ......... Can somebody pls helppppp

Yes its old and ugly looking....and we love it.

Afterall there cannot be two 'Big B's' , you can call yours as Rajni
Wrong - The Rajini version of the Thar is a Live axle, CRDe 150bhp, SPOA beast with 57" track and Electronic Diff locks all round.

Hi Mahendran,

Does the JK Brute 4x4 count .

Regards,

Arka

PS - Rajni, doesn't need SPOA

Nothing new man. Open your eyes and see the 99% of similarity.
@anuj:

The basic body shell is the same as the MM540. The Chasis, suspension, engine & gearbox are updated. Basically, it is a much better vehicle than the old mm540. The looks have been retained as most of the jeep fans don't want to mess with the classic CJ5 look.

Re: Mahindra Thar MDi Thread (more pics at page 24)

Sorry if I missed it. But on PG24, reading about specs of Thar MDI, no additional info is given for 4Wd version. GB is NGT20(5+1).
Can anyone please confirm the Tcase? Is it also Borg Warner like CRDe? or is it T18? What will be the gear ratios of MDI & what will be Low ratio (1:2.48)?

Diff. ratio is only 3.73 which is not that good for torque, but good for onroad speed may be.

Hi Offroad Maniac,

Spicer T18 with Borg-Warner Adapter Plate, yes that is the official name, and sequential shift

This combination was tried out on the MM550XDB, 1998-2002c and then carried over to some vehicles.

Hi 1:1
Lo 1:2.46

Regards,

Arka

Thanks Arka Sir.
Wonder when it will be launched here. If I am not wrong, you must be having some plans ready.

Re: Mahindra Thar MDi Thread (more pics at page 24)

what i understand is that both the Thars...CRDe and MDI would be manufactured in different factories of M&M!

is this true? is yes, then im sure there is going to be a big difference in both the vehicles!

could some one shed some light on this, please?

Re: Mahindra Thar MDi Thread (more pics at page 24)

COUNSEL has posted THAR prices from Bangalore dealer including the DI 4x4 on the other thread. Reposting it here for convenience. (BTW, DI 4x4 is BS-III - the BS-IV is a typo).

so that means they are two different vehicles!

MDI as a replacement for volume sales generated by Major/Invader, where as CRDe is purely a life style vehicle and not volume produced!

compared to the major 4x4, is the thar MDi 4x4 a decent vehicle enough to bough by people who cant afford CRDe?

As far as chassis and guage of the body metal sheet is concerned, it is. But the Thar 4x2 I saw yesterday at Mahindra showroom, Alappuzha had below average fit and finish, even by the standards of the segment it belongs to. The door locks are not precise and closes with an unhealthy sound instead of an assuring "thud". I also found it very odd to see that the portion seperating the running board and platform had no rubber beeding even, in true style of old 540s. The canvas top, from the interior, looks like a cheap aftermarket job.The paint job, though thick, lacks the finish( not gloss) of "Major". Above all that 51' track and 185/16 tyres takes away the stance of the Jeep. And Mahindra could have got rid of that damned dash and could have employed an ordinary bolero pic-up dash, to say the least.
But start the engine and what you hear is the familiar grunt of MDI 3200 TC, well sound insulated and the pic-up underpinnings also look very robust.

Re: Mahindra Thar MDi Thread (more pics at page 24)

No Disc break for MDi ?

Thar

Brakes : Dual Hydraulic Circuit with Tandem Master
Cylinder and Vacuum Assisted Servo

I think M&M's sales department people done the R&D for Mdi.
same thing as they done to the wider track width.

I believe if the Thar MDi comes with a Wider track width and front Disc break it will be a strong competitor for Thar CRDe.
