Re: Mahindra Thar MDi Thread (more pics at page 24)

Had a question about the Thar MDi as compared to the Gypsy. For highway use and moderate off-road requirement (adventure, forest trails mainly, broken hill roads, maybe some occasional snow) is the 4x2/4x4 MDi a good enough alternative to the ridiculous wait that Maruti subjects civilian Gypsy buyers to? Or is the Gypsy that much better than the Thar MDi that the wait is worth it? Please note: a. Am not asking from a 'which vehicle is the boss' angle; I have no allegiance to either manufacturer. b. Have not mentioned the Thar CRDe as that's out of my budget.

Perhaps this is a 'newbie' question in the light of the heavy technical and aesthetic discussions that are going on on the 3 Thar threads right now, but I have a hunch that there may be not a few people who are weighing the two alternatives before making that first 'off-road vehicle' booking.

I would vote for Thar Mdi for your needs. Its diesel, cheap to maintain with service access almost anywhere in this country. Go for it!

^^ Actually it is a deterrent, only with sub 4.xx axles can such numbers be achieved...!!

Re: Mahindra Thar MDi Thread (more pics at page 24)

Its been a week and strangely news on the Thar MDi has just died down.

Questions:
How come specimens of this vehicle were at Bangalore showrooms? How come Bangalore showrooms have listing info and details of this vehicle?
Where in Bangalore City / Bangalore Rural can the Thar MDi be registered?

New Thar MDi 4x4 Vs (Ex-Army) MM550XD rebuild, which would you choose and why?

Re: Mahindra Thar MDi Thread (more pics at page 24)

Thanks Ironwolf for reviving this thread. More than a week's hiatus on this thread for such a capable vehicle, whilst the CRDe thread is raining Pages!

The dealers in Gurgaon even deny knowledge of the MDI. After all getting it registered is not their headache, but the customers. Mahindra should at least push some brochures and information about the MDI, to all dealers.

What are circled parts?

It is to allow the windshield to fold down? If so, the CRDe buyers are doing to be mighty annoyed.

Yeah, the windshield can be opened in DI.

It is mentioned in the DI brochure too.

There you go, one more reason the DI seems to be the better proposition.

Re: Mahindra Thar MDi Thread (more pics at page 24)

The windshield can be opened to around 6inches-outward but keeping it there by tightening the screw type angle holder on bad roads is another thing

Tried to open and keep it locked on my friends 5yr old CL550mdi, despite of tightening the screw with all our might it still would loosen and collapse back 3-4inches in secs even while driving on smooth tarmac.

If the Thar mdi is 75% as smooth as a CL550mdi (theoretically it should be equivalent minus the door rattle coz CL550mdi does not have doors remember?), we have struck gold coz with slightly longer, heavier and broader base the Thar mdi definitely should be a bit more tarmac friendly...

Ask him to buy a complete new locking clamp. This was the saving grace while driving back to Pune from Examm iirc when it was raining and the wiper suddenly packed up. Different thing i was mud black when we stopped at the petrol station on Pune-Mumbai freeway.

Last avalaconda outing me and star aqua drove the whole trip on DwArF with open window. And it was good fun, and a very good alternative to AC.

Hey! It's a Mahindra. That's what it does best.

But no, no difference at all.
