re: Marengo: Rocky Beige Scorpio mHawk 4WD & MLD. 80000 kms up!

What to say of Mahindra quality and reliability. Terrible. Lot of pain always.

In my Scorpio VLX MHawk 4WD the engine rpm tends to slow down when idling and the vehicle often shuts.

20,000 km servicing was done last month, all filters were replaced.

What may be the issue.

Two of the four glasses ( windows ) dont open. Hammering the door panel for the front passenger side window doesnt work any longer. Why such gizmos man if you cannot guarantee quality.

Drove it up to some high speeds last week on a trip to Agra on the Taj Expressway.

On the return trip cruise control failed to engage for quite some time and finally did only 50 km from delhi.

Trouble, more trouble all the time.

Tyre pressure monitoring system.

Completely gone bonkers.

During the Sariska trip on Dec 25 the spare wheel and rear right were blinking. Had stopped and checked the pressure with a very reliable manual dial type gauge from Bushranger Australia.

Now all of them blink every time i start the vehicle.

Will try the complicated recalibrate process, where is the time to get into all this?

Check MAF sensor and clean.

Check to see if your brake lights stay on all the time. A little rubber bung on the brake pedal, which activates the brake light switch, wears out - costs Rs.7 and takes 1 minute to replace (I have no idea why it can't be replaced with a more durable material).

Details of how to do it: http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/techni...ml#post3185566. Takes less than 5 minutes.

Mass airflow sensor, in the case of Scorpio it's an HFM sensor. Found on the air intake tubing. Lots of videos about how to clean them are available on YouTube.

Don't worry Sir, its like a seesaw, the Scorpio seems to go through phases. Will explain by the intent of this post!

The thread hasn't seen much action from me in recent times, mainly because there wasn't anything substantial to report on. Have crossed the 80k milestone and its associated service, so will take the opportunity to type down the expenses and the adventures Marengo has had in between.

On 17th Feb last month, Marengo crossed the 80k milestone. Here were the related expenses.

Touchwood, all regular items. Reinforcing my belief that, Marengo likes it, if it gets its dose of adventure, otherwise it actually throws tantrums.

Marengo added the 75,000 milestone and has completed the 75k service checkpoint.

Interestingly going by observations over last few months, I anticipated few more things needing attention, there was also a bad-road/offroad adventure trip in the intervening time. Touchwood it did not.

The 75k Service costed only 398 and what was added was only two license plate bulbs. Brakes, Suspension, electricals all fine.

So the stats now stand at Rs 59993 at 75,000kms. Cost per km comes down to 80 paise per km.

Maybe Marengo actually likes adventure and hence stays healthier that way!

Coming to the expense items, here they are

Parts/Consumables

Bulb 6v 21 w double 30.00
Bulb 18.00
Washer Copper M14 11.00
Foam Air Cleaner 565.00
Oil Seal Front Hub - 2 pcs 214.00
KIT Pads BIL 3990.00
4WD Hub cap 199.00
Maximile FEO 1 ltr 332.00
Maximile FEO 6 ltr 1660.00
Maximile Universe Oil filter 166.00
Consumables 225.00
Cleaning Chemical 97.00
Maximile Genuine Grease 139.00
Brake Oil Dot 4 - 3pcs 285.00
Maximile Syntect F2 1 ltr - 2pcs 796.00

Parts Total 8727.02

Labour

Labour 80k service (Tax inclusive) 3842.00
Labour front brake pad R&R 450.00
Labour total 4292.00

Total - Rs 13019

Thus

Cost till 75k Milestone Rs 59993 (80p per Km)
Cost till 80k Milestone Rs 73012 (91p per Km)

However about the adventures that Marengo had put in was a Lolegaon discovery trip and an exploration trip of Gangani, the so-called grand-canyons of West Bengal with the Kolkata Offroaders group.

The Charkhole trip can be read about here :-

Some Pics from those.

With his super capable friends, from he learns and emulates and has so far not put a foot wrong (thankfully!!)

The underwater Submarine, though this became a little dangerous, it wasn't our intent.

Coming to a report on these tyres, the Maxxis Bravo 771 A/T :-

Marengo: Rocky Beige Mahindra Scorpio mHawk 4WD & MLD. 4 years & 1 lakh kms up!-img_28731.jpg

its almost 30k since I procured them. These tyres have seen hell. Climbed the steepest rocky roads at Sandakphu, Sillery Gaon, Kolakham, Murti, the full Lolegaon/Charkhole exploration trip, various OTR's and the related hazards.

Marengo: Rocky Beige Mahindra Scorpio mHawk 4WD & MLD. 4 years & 1 lakh kms up!-img_2669.jpg

Roads like these were more of a norm than exception.

Marengo: Rocky Beige Mahindra Scorpio mHawk 4WD & MLD. 4 years & 1 lakh kms up!-img_2755.jpg

Not a single cut, or bruise, not even a superficial cut. So full marks for robustness, although the road noise is on the higher side compared to the Geolandars and steering feel is not that consistent. But since I know, the Sidewalls of the Geolandars I had earlier, would have given up much earlier, their positive qualities hardly matter.

So Marengo continues to go!

Still having trouble with TPMS. Reset it three times once at Mahindra service centre twice myself but it keeps blinking and now fails to read tyre pressure.
Will ask for warranty replacement.

What happens if i remove it totally and fit ordinary tyre valves, will the warning orange light keep blinking ?

You can deactivate the circuit at the Mahindra workshop itself. But I would suggest keeping it. They replace the sensors under warranty. I am not a hardcore offroader, but the TPMS has helped me in many ways, although one has to put up a logical thinking cap, everytime I have it warn me, its quite entertaining and educating though.

re: Marengo: Rocky Beige Scorpio mHawk 4WD & MLD. 96,000 kms up!

I tried the reset once again, this time it seems to be working fine, but now it reads front left tyre as 27.4 lb no matter what the tyre pressure is.

Will check with a reliable milton gauge and a digital gauge gifted to me by TOYO design engineers, need to fix its battery and then recaliberate again, its a real pain to raise and lift the spare tyre up / down during the caliberation.

Lets see else I will demand warranty replacement.

You have a good car in there and thank you for the detailed walkthrough. Apologies for the noob question, what is the frequency in which you replace the engine oil? Is it topped up every 5000 Kms and replaced once in 10000 Kms?

The oil change interval is 20k. If there is a top up requirement, in between, the workshop does it by themselves.

Wow 20000 kms is quite a long window, is it recommended by service station?

re: Marengo: Rocky Beige Scorpio mHawk 4WD & MLD. 96,000 kms up!

I will disagree with this.

No matter what Mahindra says.

This MAxmile FEO is not even rated. Manufactured by Indianoil who do not have upper end oil manufacturing facility. Their own oil comes from Exxcon Mobile.

I do not trust this Mahindra Maxmile Feo at all.

An API rated oil is Castrol CRB turbo. It is a specific design oil for Diesel Turbo like CRDe and MHawk engines.

The ideal service interval for oil & filter change should be 7000 to 8000 KM with maximum stretch interval of 10,000 KM.

If someone was useing a very good blend like speciality diesel Delvac it is a different isuue.

But Maxmile Feo with no antecedant of its origins being driven 20,000 K is a recipe for disaster even more in the summer months.

re: Marengo: Rocky Beige Scorpio mHawk 4WD & MLD. 96,000 kms up!

Well the Story of the horse (named Marengo) continues. Although, the thread hasn't been updated in a while, mainly because the ownership has been largely uneventful, from perspective of maintenance issues.

We had an Intervening Ladakh trip. Read about it here

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travel...h-episode.html

But before undertaking the trip, we wanted to ensure that the 85k milestone service was undertaken a bit early, to give us more of a breathing space till the 90k service milestone.

The 85k service was thus taken up with the Odo reading 83779kms, giving us a bit more than 6000 kms till the next service and hopefully enough to see us through in Ladakh.

However, apart from the usual 85k items, since we had a Ladakh trip planned, I had requested a replacement of Belts and hoses, just to be sure and a thorough check of all Suspension components and bushes. So rather than a forced expense, it was more of a precautionary measure to see us through Ladakh. Here is the Expense breakup

Parts
Bulb 5v 21w Rs. 30
washer copper m14 Rs. 12
Clip worm type no-2 Rs. 13
clamp Rs. 24
clamp Rs. 24
plug drain Rs. 36
hose oil cooler pipe outlet Rs. 90
Belt 1171 Rs. 885
Belt 1115 Rs. 885
Hose egr cooler outlet Rs. 154
Bolthex flange Rs. 96
bushing upper arm Rs. 868
bush stabiliser bar Rs. 157.5
bush lower link chassis Rs. 1372
bush stabiliser bar rear Rs. 134
loctite ultrablue sealant Rs. 148
kit o ring clutch tube Rs. 14
maximile ultracool Rs. 735
nitrogen inflate Rs. 100
consumables Rs. 225
rust remove Rs. 250
brake oil dot 4 Rs. 190
balance wt sticker Rs. 900
Parts Total Rs. 7342.5

Labour

Machine shop charges Rs. 674.16
Accesory drive belt inspect and replace Rs. 314.61
85000 service labour Rs. 404.50
Labour Total - Rs. 1393.26

85K Service total Rs. 8735.76

The Maintenance Charges per km till this milestone thus was

Marengo at 80K Rs 73012
Marengo at 85K Rs 81747.76
Translating to a maintenance cost of Rs 0.96 per km

So after this it was time to set sail.

Marengo conquered a lot of Ladakh, including the elusive and difficult Marsimik-La

Marengo: Rocky Beige Mahindra Scorpio mHawk 4WD & MLD. 4 years & 1 lakh kms up!-img_16261.jpg

Infact the Ladakh trip went as a breeze for Marengo

Seen here, its basking in the sun at Nubra Valley

Marengo: Rocky Beige Mahindra Scorpio mHawk 4WD & MLD. 4 years & 1 lakh kms up!-img_1373.jpg

However, mid-trip the 90k milestone was also nearing. So we scheduled the 90k service at Shuhul Mahindra at Srinagar. The service experience was far from satisfactory, in the end, I was happy that the vehicle made it back from the service center within a day and without having developed any snag.

However here are the details of the expenses

Just needed front and rear differential oil change. Rest being inspection items.

Maximile Elite 1.8 ltrs - Rs 1426
90000 km service Labour - Rs 1680

Total 90000 km service cost = Rs 3106

Cost of maintenance at 90k milestone = Rs 84853
Translates to a Rs 0.94 per km.

Marengo came back peacefully. Thankfully remained troublefree till 95k milestone. Had seen an OTR from the Kolkata Offroaders team.

Marengo emerging out of the ground! Pic courtesy bhpian Samba

The 95k service was also largely uneventful. Because it had only some checklist items for checking.

Nothing required to be done.

95000 Service Labour - Rs 404.5

So cost of Maintenance went up only to Rs 85258. The cost translated to a cost per km of Rs 0.89 per km. Impressive for a 95k vehicle having been through a lot of adventures and events.

But, four days after the service, this was about to change by a bit. There was a gnashing sound on application of brakes. 95K service did not have a check of the brake pad wear situation.

The front left pad was worn out till the metal and had impacted the rotor as well. Probably the rotor could have been saved had the situation been caught during 95k service. But looking at the service schedule, they were not wrong in not checking for pad thickness, besides the pads were changed at 80k itself.

Even the front right pad was worn and so were the shoes at the rear. I am told, its actually the Ladakh effect, premature brake wear is not uncommon.

So here was an additional expense item, in a long time though. But to take back something from it, the component prices have reduced.

Parts

Kit Lined shoe Rs. 3300
Disc RH Rs. 2795
Disc LH Rs. 2793
Kit Pads Rs. 3995
caliper grease Rs. 40
Consumables Rs. 225
Parts Total Rs. 13148

Labour
Brake Liners Rand R Rs. 989
Front Brake Disc R and R Rs. 899
Labour total Rs. 1888

Discount Rs. 625

Total repair cost Rs 14411

With this there would be a spike in the cost per km, but still hanging around the 1 rupee mark, given the inflation and the adventures Marengo has seen, its within quite acceptable limits.

Maintenance cost at 96k milestone
Rs 99668.5
Cost per Km = Rs 1.03

Have a tyre change coming up and also a Battery change.

However, Marengo continues to gallop as one faithful and reliable horse and hopefully it will continue after crossing the 1lakh km milestone, after which, he will be out of the extended warranty scope as well as Mahindra's guardianship. Keeping fingers crossed.

A pic of Marengo in the kind of habitat he so loves to be in.

Great review . Gone through all 13 odd pages of Marengo and its achievements . I surely miss the 4WD some times in my Scorpio VLX 4X2 .

Wish had taken a decision for a 4WD when i bought scorpio in 2009. I have seen your pictures , videos and the way Scorpio going OTR and i am amazed . Probably one of the best long term review covered on scorpio in Team BHP
