Army Gypsy 2000 MPFI- Build Off

Hey Guys,
My dream of owning a gypsy has finally come true, got my hands on a 2000 Ex Army Gypsy (MPFI) in great condition. Would be sharing with you my experience of the build off and would like to seek help from all the experienced team members on weather or not my planning is correct and ways to improve my Gypsy.

I would like to keep the vehicle as stock as possible so no fancy stuff will going in. Its the mechanicals i'll be concentrating more on.

THE CAR'S CONDITION (WHEN BOUGHT):
  1. Body line- Great
  2. Underbody- Clean
  3. Tires- Poor
  4. Suspension- Good
  5. Engine- Good
  6. Interior- Average
  7. Floor- Good
  8. Electricals- Good
  9. Paint- Average
  10. Running Condition- Yes
WAY FORWARD:

Stage 1:
  1. Full Service
  2. Clear Headlamps
  3. Horn
  4. JK Tornado tyres
  5. Stock Rims
  6. Floor mats
  7. New dash

This should make the car absolutely road worthy, will drive it for around two months and get on to stage 2:

Stage 2:
  1. Half cabin- Fiber
  2. Header, Performance air filter
  3. Hella Lamps
  4. Bull Bar
  5. Additional shock absorbers
  6. Paint Job

PRIMARY USAGE:
City- 60%
Off Road- 40%

EXPECTATIONS FROM THE FINAL PRODUCT
  • Should be fast.
  • Rattle free
  • Off-roading capability without hassles
  • Perfect Handling

Attaching few pictures of the exterior, will share pictures of the interiors, engine bay and underbody in my subsequent post.

Please feel free to advice me on this project and what should I do to meet the expectations mentioned above. Thanks a ton.

Regards

By looking at the photos, Vehicle looks excellent and well maintained.
Now, please share us the cost of the Gypsy and how did you buy it?I am looking forward to get one in the near future so need some help and advise.

Also, registration seems like a Military one now how do we change it to the normal ones( I mean registration like our car)??

Re: Army Gypsy 2000 MPFI- Build Off

Hi Camchennai,

The car cost me 2.0 L with 5 almost new JK Tornado tires (done 500 odd kms, spare wheel is brand new)

I bought this vehicle from someone i got to know while browsing various forums (will share his contact after seeking his permission).

As far as registration is concerned, the seller has promised to get it done from Zira, Punjab. It would cost around 15K. (Guys do let me know if the registration cost is fair). It takes around 15 days to get the registration done.

Hope this helps.

looks quite neat. How much did you get it for?
And regarding the registration the charge is OK. Whom did you buy the vehicle from in Mayapuri.
Congrats on the vehicle
Cheers

Hi Harjeev,
The vehicle cost me 2 lac with almost new tires.
I did not buy it from Mayapuri, someone bought it from an auction from Patahnkot and I took it fom him.

The vehicle looks neat and for the price paid its a deal, I dont think you can keep that paintjob (cops will surly catch you especially in the NCR), so your first priority should be paint job if mechanicals are intact. JK Tornado tires are not good since you already have ~ new tyres i would suggest you to exchange them for yoko golanders. BTW saw a sneak peak of your lancer with 17" alloys, how comfortable are they?

Re: Army Gypsy 2000 MPFI- Build Off

Hi Pramod,
Thanks for your input.
Can civilians not keep army green gypsy (even if i remove all the millitary markings which are visible on the car as of now?). Is there any law which prohibits this?

Would the geo landers fit on the stock rim, and if yes how much would it cost me to exchange and from where?

About my lancer- Its on 17" Momo Corse rims with Yoko A-Drive R1 tyres. The ride is good and stable on a smooth road like the NH8 but really rough on rough roads.

You can go to karolbagh, but before you go there read through the threads of other Delhi Gypsy owners, there are people who have got really great deals for the stock tyres during exchange.

Yes i have seen those wheels and yes they look hot but 17" Are really uncomfortable, my car is running 15" with 50 profile and trust me they too are uncomfortable, i am thinking of downsizing to 60 profile, you should post some pics of your car here

Looks like I will have to go for a paint job after going through Sec 121 of the Motor Vehicle Act. Thanks for the heads up, Pramod.

Pics of my lancer are posted here http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/modifi...cs-thread.html.

looks great. price is decent and the registration cost is fine too. You are lucky to get the JK Tornado's. they are very good on road and decent for offroading except slush

Thats a decent price to pay for a MPFI Gypsy. And with regards to the Olive Green color, well I'd say that though the law says you can't drive I drove my MM550 for more than a year in the olive green paint job and not just in Delhi but even out station too. Never had any issue whatsoever.
I have a friend who is driving a similar 2001 MPFI ex-army gypsy again in olive green color and he's not thinking of an immediate paintjob.

That said I would say that it always pays to be on the right side of the law and you never know when the tide turns.

With regards to work on Gypsys though all Maruti workshops should be able to handle but its always advisable to go at workshops who specilaise in Gypsys or frequently work on gypsys, as parts (not all but some of them) sourcing for them is a little easier and /or quicker than compared to workshops who handle only sedans. Again this is not a requirement but just a humble suggestion.

BTW if you do not mind sharing what part of Delhi are you based in?
I am in Central Delhi and have atleast 3-4 friends who are rebuilding their gypsys and if you could please PM me the name of you contact as I have a friend who is very eagerly looking for a MPFI gypsy and it would be of great help to him.
Cheers

Thanks for the advice, Harjeev.
Will PM you the sellers contact.
I am in South Delhi. Can you recommend any workshop which has a reputation in building Gypsies and is not exorbitantly priced.

Thanks

Re: Army Gypsy 2000 MPFI- Build Off

Guys here are some photographs i clicked of the interior and the underbody, the pics are not so good quality as the vehicle was standing in a dark place.

Update:
While taking the car to the garage we noticed that the oil lamp was flickering which meant the fuel pump in the engine was blocked.
On opening the engine we found that it was completely blocked by sludge. The engine has been opened and cleaned, thankfully no damage was done to the internal parts.
I was also told that if the car would have done another few kms the engine would have seized.

Whats your take on his people?
