Re: Mahindra Thar Launch on 21st December 2010. Update: Price on Page 2!

at this price they could include a nice Jeep wrangler type hard top on the CRde high end model. over all it is a niche vehicle so the pricing will be on the high side. i think the DI will be VFM

Re: Mahindra Thar Launch on 21st December 2010. Update: Price on Page 2!

First of all, congratulation to the M&M Team for making the Thar happen. I guess that this lifestyle off-roader has been targeted well to the yuppies like me who wouldn't mind going off for one off recce over the weekend and cover a decent amount of distance. I've always wanted to own a jeep and I know the fact that "Real Jeeps are built not bought". Now, some people like us have a decent opportunity to own one (though not know it).
Though I think that it is a little on the higher side for me, maybe now I will wait for some more time to figure out if it is really worth the amount.

Also, kudos to Team-BHP off roaders mentioned by DB.

Re: Mahindra Thar Launch on 21st December 2010. Update: Price on Page 2!

14 pages of discussion on the THAR make one thing clear.

Thar MDI 4x4 is the way forward and its the best VFM when the we have to make a choice between the two Thars.

a rigid front axle was in many of the member's wish list and it has been provided (sadly) in the MDI.

CRDe with the IFS is surely and purely for people who have the moolah and want to use it to flaunt the vehicle on sundays.

MDI is purely an offroad enthusiast's vehicle which from my point of view will do the tour of duty offroad and not stand in the house garage to be taken out as and when the owner gets time to enjoy the lifestyle vehicle (CRDe)!

happy mud slugging to all!

Re: Mahindra Thar Launch on 21st December 2010. Update: Price on Page 2!

^^ Big problem is the MDi cant be bought by 90% of the Tbhp guys (assuming the offroading community is 90% from a metro).

Question - Can NEWDelhi guys register a Mdi in noida/gurgaon with their metro home addresses?
Similarly, can Greater Bombay guys register in Thane (likewise) using their metro addresses? (I think yes - coz my uncle's verna from mulund was registered in thane).

Re: Mahindra Thar Launch on 21st December 2010. Update: Price on Page 2!

I had a glimpse of the Thar yesterday. Had seen it before at Bangy when i went to pick Behram sir to the Airport.

All i can say is, its called a premium lifestyle 4*4.

But plonking a Scorpio engine into a MM540 and not giving comfortable features, is not what we were looking for.

What i did'nt like from the pricing point of view.
1) Home bred Engine which did not need much of R&D and investment
2) Old Willys chassis, which again did not need much of R&D and investment
3) Same old 4WD tranny
4) Same old braking system.
5) Same old design as the MM540.

For that price we expected atleast.

1) Better dashboard
2) Better ergonomical seating
3) An A/C which is not OPTIONAL
4) All 4 Disc brakes
5) Fly by shift 4WD switch NOT MANUAL
6) Atleast some amount of money and R&D should have gone into a fresh radical design.

What percentage of the T-BHP community guys buy the Thar, is yet to be seen.

What a load of tosh if you ask me

.................................................. ..

There HAS to be a law that forces these manufacturers to ensure that their top products are available for sale in India FIRST before allowing them to sell it anywhere else. They are using OUR natural resources and labor and giving us junk back in return!!!

Makes my BLOOD BOIL
+ 1 ^^^

Would like to congratulate the entire team at M&M R&D (BD, Vinod, Spike and the rest)Before this discussion turns into what COULD / WOULD and SHOULD have been done with the Thar (wait a second, it already has..).

Personally, the Thar to me is no more than a "Midnight Buffet" - Left overs from the day, served with a lot of garnish at a decent price - yes, DECENT!!

It does the Job of fulfilling ones late night food cravings; in the same way that the Thar does the job of performing well off-road in its current avatar.

If you wanted anything outside the buffet menu, go a la carte - the waiter/captain doesn't really care of your food habits / cravings, but will hear you out and see what can be done - BUT, at a price and within his capacity to please! The same is the case with a full sized vehicle manufacturer.

Social media (Facebook / TBhp) has been used exceptionally well to communicate the product and increase inquisition - the interactions have also been extremely monotonous but not necessarily in favor of the end customer; not entirely atleast. The masses just want to be heard and voice their opinion, irrespective of whether their wants are fulfilled.

Like Mr. Henry ford said - "You can have any color as long as it is black". The motor industry in India is a sellers market!! But eventually Ford did succumb to the market conditions (although, it only took a few decades before they did).

I MIGHT buy one of these in a years time. Hopefully by then, M&M would have heard and actually implemented / incorporated all the changes in Version 2 OR NOT!!

While this thread continues for another gzillion monotonous posts with what COULD/SHOULD/WOULD have been done, which in my opinion is not a bad thing - M&M will eventually consider our requests.
But at the end of the day it is very simple decision to make with what is being offered in its current form - TAKE IT.. OR LEAVE IT!!

Oh yes... a few UNBIASED Test Drive reports would be a lot helpful in the decision making process for prospective customers.

Cheers..

Re: Mahindra Thar Launch on 21st December 2010. Update: Price on Page 2!

In my humble opinion, turning a Jeep going at 100+ speeds on a highway when it has a Solid axle will be a scary.

They did not really have much choice but to go the IFS route, if you wanted a Crde engine powering it.

And @Pavan:
What i did'nt like from the pricing point of view.
1) Home bred Engine which did not need much of R&D and investment
I don't think its a fully home bred engine.
The Crde unit is the same as the one with Bolero and Xylo.
Those engines were based on the Scorpio engine.
The Scorpio engine was by AVL. The same guys who did the Safari 2.2 as well.

Quote:
5) Same old design as the MM540.
If you go thru the old Thar threads. Everyone wanted it to look like the old MM540.

For that price we expected atleast.

Quote:
2) Better ergonomical seating
Not yet sat in it so no comments.
But I personally find bothe the Scorpio and the Bolero comfortable.

Even Noida and Gurgaon are classified into Euro 4 zone, so getting a Thar MDi registered here is not a possiblity. AFAIK even cities like Meerut and Rohtak fall under NCR so they are also under Euro 4 zone.

Expecting all wheel discs is a little too much from Thar, even some of 20L+ SUVs like Fortuner and Pajero do have them yet. Even the Scorpio does not yet come with a four wheel disc set up.

The manual shift mechanism is much more reliable compared to the Electric unit offered in the Scorpio. AFAIK the manual transfer case also has the shift on fly capability.

Re: Mahindra Thar Launch on 21st December 2010. Update: Price on Page 2!

BIG Congratulations to the Mahindra team on account of an attempt to create a unique segment in the Indian motoring catalog. Looks like they have indeed pulled it off

The pricing seems considerate, the product looks thoughtful and last but not the least the intent seems to be indeed customer centric! My heartfelt appreciations to all the key stake holders especially Behram Dhabhar'ji, Vinod Nookala'ji and all the folks from the Tech team.

Dhabhar'ji, I know you are an extremely busy man at this time so I wouldnt disturb you by ringing in, but I would love to congratulate you in person and give you one important feedback that I will refrain from posting it here. Will give it a shot sometime later today...

Pavanji are you sure about this ? I am confused

As far as what I saw on the assembly line ( specially the rolling chassis without body ) & comparing it to my 'old' ( 1989 ) 540 4x4 , I found the following ,

1) Thar crde dosent have the old C section chassis .It had a rigid box/tube chassis

2) The transmission looked like the new 'Borg warner ' all alluminium casings & not like my jeep ( 4 forward 1 reverse + T 18 )

3) a braking system with booster( vaccum assist ) & a load sensing unit mounted on rear end of the chassis ,which is not like my 540

4) & design ,yes It looks like the old 540 ,but only looks there are so many changes in body pannels , for example see the front mud guards inner sides

I dont know what R&D they have done or not, but I surely saw its different then what you are saying .

OR had I seen something else

AVL did develop the 2.2 l engine which runs the Scorpio ( mHAWK) and Safari now.

But is the Thar CRDE based on that ? I dont think so. I think its based on the original 2.6l ENGINE that came in the Scorpio which is now called the mEAGLE and this I think is a HOME GROWN engine

On a positive note - M&M have done a great job to give a RELATIVELY modern offroader + highway blaster in a body shape that STILL draws attention from many people. For all those people who cant go the customised route, this is a good option.

On a cribbing note - M&M have definetly given too less for the price when one compares what goes into this vehicle in comparison to other similarly priced vehicles.

Every car will have a + and -. I for one, if I had the money, would go for the THAR once a good factory fitted AC, HT and front facing rear seat option comes. Would prefer if M&M can improve the dashboard and ergonomics by then.

Its the NGCS Chassis with very high structural rigidity and hence has the ability to take much higher levels of abuse

As a matter of fact Borg Warner Transfer Case is standard across TATA and M&M. So I fail to understand how it can become state of the art in a TATA Safari and same ole **** in M&M

I understand the booster is different and bigger than the Bolero VLX (Spike can confirm) which has the same setup.

IIRC the Safari also hasn't changed in looks since last 10+ years.

The THAR CRDe/ MEagle / Bolero VLX engine are all same with different levels of tune are based on XD3P engine with common rail injection unit bolted on top. This was developed inhouse by M&M along with Bosch fellows.

Guys i am booking the Thar Crde. I was wondering if someone could tell me the colour of the other car from the launch. It looks like a shade of green to me but they dont have that on the site. Is it the Rocky beige? Thank you.
