Re: Mahindra Thar Launch on 21st December 2010. Update: Price on Page 2!

Am not very sure LSD is a straight fit and hence MLD at a later date. I might be wrong?

Aren't the rear axles going to be the same as the Army MM550. Was under that impression hence the thought.

Your help has converted my Thar dream into reality today. Thank you once again for taking the time from your schedules to see the Thar launch live. The real work starts now, so my core team and I go back to work.

By the way - "how do you make the Thar CRDe better than what it is today? . Let the interactions begin.

Please accept my best personal regards,

One thing for sure the rear door.. 3 out of 5 times it doesn't shut properly. That is the case with my 55O as well as the New Thar MDI I checked at showroom.. Please change the mechanism it has basic defect in its design.

Two the front indicator lights should go in the fender [like Wrangler] because they are very vulnerable and break quite often in offroad.

Rest everything I like for now in both Di as well as CRDe. Its a nice base vehicle for each one to customise as per own need.

Look forward to coming up with a model by the end of the year and hopefully a working prototype by end Jan - the sooner the better.

If I am correct, these pics are of a Rubicon not a Wrangler. Either which way are you seriously contemplating making this removeable HT for the THAR. If yes, list me as one of your first few customers.

I really wish this option was available from the Factory, with airconditioner, alloys & nice tyres. Had that been the case I'd have bought one by now (It's another matter that the dealers here do not even know if & when the Thar is being launched & at what price.)

cheers

I would have been more happy if it contained latest aesthetics aspects combined with latest engine.

If you get experienced mechanic, I feel with this pricing OLD MM440 and 550 shall be converted with similar specs with much lesser price. Please note many CJs, MM440 etc. had fitted power steering, AC etc. (GTO's classic). Even at the time of launch Thar used Classic's bull bar.

Design of Thar is nothing to talk about. What makes it differ from OLD design (except new engine)?
@anuj: Before you pass critical comments, take some effort to read up about the Thar. It is not a Scorpio engine in a Willys Chasis.

Jeepers actually prefer the jeep looks rather than convert the jeep too look like say a Sumo Grande or XYLO. If you recall even Chrysler reverted back to the classic jeep looks after toying with square headlights etc.

You can add power steering and AC to an old MM540, but you will not get the Thar. The subject is a bit technical else I would have tried to explain why but if you have time, read the tech specs and history of the thar and you may get it.

All i can say is, its called a premium lifestyle 4*4.

But plonking a Scorpio engine into a MM540 and not giving comfortable features, is not what we were looking for.

What i did'nt like from the pricing point of view.
1) Home bred Engine which did not need much of R&D and investment
2) Old Willys chassis, which again did not need much of R&D and investment
3) Same old 4WD tranny
4) Same old braking system.
5) Same old design as the MM540.

For that price we expected atleast.

1) Better dashboard
2) Better ergonomical seating
3) An A/C which is not OPTIONAL
4) All 4 Disc brakes
5) Fly by shift 4WD switch NOT MANUAL
6) Atleast some amount of money and R&D should have gone into a fresh radical design.

What percentage of the T-BHP community guys buy the Thar, is yet to be seen.
Looks like the Safari tag team here to bash the Thar. Please read the reply to anuj's post regarding the Scorpio Engine and Willys chasis.
You are right, it is a shame they have not put All 4 Disc brakes and fly by shift 4WD in a 6 lakh vehicle, given that these features are available in 12+ Lakh Scorpios and Safaris.

Have you taken a drive to comment on the ergonomic seating?

Small clarification, "shift on the fly" systems are not preferred in OTR vehicles, coz they get damage and misbehave very easily with all the muck and water. So manual shift is a boon in this case.

AFAIK, Thar has Manual Shift on Fly. Right? (I guess he was referring to electric shifter which may get damaged in water)

I think Shift On Fly= Change into 4H in low speed say less than 10KM/H & 4L in less than 4KM/H? (Pls correct me if I am wrong.)

Guru, could you please educate me about this engine? AFAIK, currently there are only 2 production variants which develop 140 BHP, curious to know about this 3rd one.

Re: Mahindra Thar Launch on 21st December 2010. Update: Price on Page 2!

^^ There is an error in the price list provided above. Thar DI 4wd is BS-III and not BS-IV as mentioned. Only CRDe comes with BS-IV.
