I have visited the Bangalore garage twice now.
The first time I visited them was in January. The task at hand was to fabricate clamps and fit aux lights on my Xylo. I was in the garage for 2 hours and I took that as an opportunity to evaluate their work. They did an honest job and charged me 2,000rs for it which I felt was a reasonable amount. I left a happy man and decided to return for the car's annual service in February.
As planned I returned to get the car serviced in February. I met with Mr Vinay who is the workshop manager and Mr Arun who is the service advisor and they prepared the job card.
Highlights -
- Two mechanics started working on the car immediately.
- All regular checks are thoroughly performed. (Impressive)
- They informed me all fluids are in good condition. Only the engine oil, breather hose(leak) and air filter will have to be replaced.
- They did not have the parts and sent the workshop boy to source it from their dealer. This caused a huge delay.
- Thankfully, I caught two mechanics discussing cutting the air filter of a Scorpio to fit the Xylo. I made it clear that I would not entertain such nonsense.
- In spite of repeatedly mentioning that I want them to use Shell Helix HX7 10W-40, they used Bosch 5W-30 and tried to convince me later saying that it is better.
This thoroughly annoyed me. I'll replace the engine oil at 2500kms. I do not want the car running on oil that is less viscous.
- Car washing and interior vacuuming was done and the car was handed over to me.
- One of the mechanics/drivers in the workshop broke my handbrake lever sleeve.
What I liked -
1) Knowledgeable mechanics.
2) They are honest in the sense that they'll not ask you to change parts/oil if it is not required.
3) You can stay at the workshop and watch as they work on your car. (Biggest plus if you ask me)
4) Good alternative to ASS if you are not satisfied with the ASS.
5) They work on all brands of cars. I saw Mercedes, Skodas, Tata, Hyundai, Ford and others come in to get serviced. However, Mr Vinay mentioned that it is much more difficult to get parts for them.
6) There are 8 bays which include 2 of them that have lifts, 1 specialized for body and paint jobs and 1 washing bay.
7) I saw them perform all the checks that are to be performed in a paid service(Not sure if this is even done in an ASS)
8) A good working condition for mechanics.
What I disliked -
1) They only stock the most basic parts. So if any part has to be changed they will send their workshop boy to pick it up from their contact. This causes delays.
2) They have a tendency to resort to Jugaad(temporary hacks) when in a tight spot.
3) They don't have a backup generator. So if there is a power cut, work comes to a halt.
4) Cost. They charge as much as a regular ASS.
5) When I received the vehicle the handbrake lever sleeve was broken. I pointed it out to Mr Arun, he said he'll order it and let me know,
I have not heard from him yet.
The cost for the service was 8,500rs which is slightly on higher side. (Bill attached)
