Vintage & Classic Cars seen in Tintin Comics

Tintin has always fascinated all of us and it appeals to across a large age groups. Various cars have been used in these comics. I got a PPT of the cars used in the comics, which I have converted to post the same. Since it is in a foreign language, I guess credits if any will be mentioned in the last picture.

Hope you enjoyed this as mush as I have

KPS how absolutely lovely. I am a Tintin aficionado or Tintinophile and have tons of stuff pertaining to Tintin.
Requesting if it is possible to share this ppt in original with me? If so, do PM me and I will share my email id.
I remember years ago, when Tintin used to be published as a weekly column in'The Week' magazine, there was an article on this exact same topic, the cars used in Tintin.
Unfortunately while I had cut that article out, I lost it in one of my 'moves'.

Superb thread - his authentic rendition of older cars is iconic.

Here is my favourite Fiat ad, for obvious reasons

Re: Vintage & Classic Cars seen in Tintin Comics

I simply love Tintin and his motley crew of rib-tickling friends! Belgian comics have the best and most expressive illustrations ever, and Hergé is the finest example of Belgian cartoonists.

The second one where the Thom(p)sons merrily sing along while driving their Citroėn 5CV along picturesque country roads is very funny. If I remember correctly, their engine goes ka-boom soon after, and Thom(p?)son tells his twin brother, "Now I understand why they call these internal combustion engines" or something like that. When my Indica Xeta's engine went ka-boom a couple of years ago, I was to about to pull my hair out in extreme frustration I then remembered this scene and it relieved my blood pressure by bringing a smile to my face. Thank you, Monsieur Georges Prosper Rémi (Hergé), for making our lives easier with your unparalleled artistic talent and wit!!!

The Thom(p)sons' other scene with their Citroėn 2CV is also hilarious as the detectives' hats get stuck on their heads, completely covering their eyes, after the extreme braking manœuvre that results in their heads going into the 2CV's ragtop!

Another funny thing is about cars in the country of Borduria (the fictional Eastern European totalitarian commie hellhole). Most cars have their front grilles modeled on the famed whiskers of Marshal Kūrvi-Tasch, the Bordurian tyrant/dictator!

For some reason, Marshal Kūrvi-Tasch refuses to have his photo shown on Team-BHP. You can have a look at his great whiskers here:

Re: Vintage & Classic Cars seen in Tintin Comics

I have been an ardent tintin fan right from my childhood. However, until today I never realized that the representation of the cars were so detailed and authentic! This is simply brilliant.

Thanks for this, brings back many memories of reading Tintin and saving to buying the comics which were very expensive. The cars are really beautiful and very well drawn.

Brilliant!

Have always loved the correctness of the cars in Tin Tin. Love your effort in getting the photo of the concerned car in almost the exact same attitude.

Labour of love, maan!

Wow the attention to detail that Hergé has put in is truly amazing. Never really gave it a second thought when reading Tin Tin as a teenager. Time to get them out as KPS said.

Ah TinTin! What a magical world it was... I still remember sketching a host of these cars while reading the books. Time to dig out those old sketchbooks!

Re: Vintage & Classic Cars seen in Tintin Comics

Wow. KPS. Thank you so much. You have made my day.
I am a MAD fan of TinTin and I have all of the adventures with me. In fact even now, I keep on reading one or the other Tintin book atleast once in a week.

This is one more facet of the Genius called Herge. I bow to him.

BTW, were the Maharajas Cadillac's suspensions so SOFT?

Once again thank you for this.

Most of the cars on which the cartoons are based on are explicitly detailed in Tintin: The Complete Companion by Michael Farr
Which is a must read for any tintin fan.But good work. From another tintin fan.

Re: Vintage & Classic Cars seen in Tintin Comics

Hergé also depicted motorcycles beautifully. Here is one such bike. Tintin just takes off with a wheelie and the poor Thom(p)sons (and Snowy) are just thrown off the bike - it's simply rib-ticklingly funny!

The single-cylinder motorcycle with a stylish exhaust happens to be a Gillet Herstal:

(Thanks to www.britbike.com and www.cybermotorcycle.com for the two images!)

Edit: I'm just not able to upload multiple images in the same post when using Safari or Chrome on the iPad.
