Re: Vintage & Classic Cars seen in Tintin Comics

This is the one that fascinated me most from childhood. The car looks great, goes fast and is also up in the air, and the Gentleman driving it has a cool name!!

Re: Vintage & Classic Cars seen in Tintin Comics

Lovely thread KPS!

Here is a scale model of him in a Ford T, it comes with baggage and camers.

Vintage & Classic Cars seen in Tintin Comics-tintin.jpg

But I am not so sure about all cars being correctly identified. The drawings were so accurate, why is there this difference for some cars? Check the Chevy 1932, Chrysler Six, Rosengard 1929, and the Chevrolet Truck 1936 (The wrecker)
I am also not so sure about the Rover 75, LaSalle 1934, and the Simca 5 (maybe he did draw a Fiat).

The drawings are excellent, but I am not so sure if all the cars have been identified correctly.

Cheers harit

Re: Vintage & Classic Cars seen in Tintin Comics

Extremely laudable effort! Hats off!! As a child, my prize for a good performance in the annual exams used to be one Tintin adventure!

It brings back fond memories. I used to amaze at the detail captured by Herge in every frame. The country roads, the highways and of course, the cars.

Here's a Land Rover from Tintin and the Picaros.

i loved this thread ! Both, Tintin and Classic Cars have been my favourites all along! Have you noticed that there is a picture with over about 25 classic & vintage cars (with race/ rally numbers on them ) at Marlinspike Hall , in a single large cartoon in a Tintin comic ! thats my favourite single cartoon!

While we are on the subject, a few pictures of my Visit to tintin store in Singapore would be apt. Moderators delete if this is out of subject.

Re: Vintage & Classic Cars seen in Tintin Comics

Awesome comics Tintin is. I really love reading them at any age any time. The single most important aspect of Tintin comics is that the incidents in the plot stand too much close to reality. It was never a dream world. Herge has done enough research in his plots. And this thread is a testimonial to it. I really thank Herge for ushering me into the happenings of the real world through comics.

Though I'm not a fan of classics, I never thought all the cars were taken from the real world. Nice thread.

This is my favorite sequence among the lot.

Re: Vintage & Classic Cars seen in Tintin Comics

Ah, Tintin! Anyways I see various instances from the automotive packed Calculus Affair, one of my favorites from the whole range. The frame depicting the Rover 75 with visible silhouettes of Tintin, Haddock and some random driver inside, pottering along calmly in the direction of Nyon beside the Lake of Geneve actually bears a strong connection to the frame in the 9th post, which shows the Simca Aronde. A tumultuous event spread over a couple of frames separate both the cars.

Tintin, Hadddock and Snowy are hot on the trail of pre-occupied Professor Calculus who suddenly disappears from Marlinspike Hall under mysterious circumstances.Acting on a hunch and after several foiled attempts by baddies from Borduria to prevent Tintin from reaching Calculus in Nyon, the trio just decided to cab it till Nyon. En route, the Aronde Taxi was pushed into the lake by the mysterious and elusive black Citroen 15, which made a dangerous and deliberate swerve in front of the Simca, all in the name of sabotage. In the classic Tintin scheme of things, the trio make a miraculous escape and somebody offers them a ride till Nyon in the white Rover 75.

Anyways, I shall jog my memory and do a little research and try going through each frame, as briefly as possible!

#Post 1 - Cigars of the Pharoh. Tintin taking two madmen to hospital in this '26 Lincoln, after they were incapacitated by the famed poison of madness, the "Rajaijah juice".

#Post 2 - The opening sequence from Land of Black Gold, where the Siamese twins are merrily chugging along in their 5CV just after tanking up on doctored fuel that'll eventually blow their engine to bits!

#Post 3 & 9 - The Calculus Affair. Explained exhaustively above.

#Post 4 - Tintin in Congo(?). I don't have a clue.

#Post 5 & 6 - The Black Island.Tintin is hot on the trail of somebody and hitches a ride in the caravan towed by this red Triumph Herald driven by an enthusiastic couple. The underpowered Herald runs out of steam on a steep incline leaving Tintin despondent, as his subject got further away. The Vauxhall was used in earlier editions.

#Post 7 - Land of Black Gold. Dr. Muller makes a run for it in his big Buick across the desert with the emir's mischievous son Abdullah, in tow.

#Post 8 - The Broken Ear. General Alcazar's policemen are hot on Tintin's trail in this '36 Ford, who has just committed a jailbreak and is piloting the puny 1929 Rosengard.

#Post 11 - The Crab with the Golden Claws. In a hasty bid to save the Captain in the fictitious port city of Bagghhar, who was just kidnapped by Alan and his mates, Tintin takes hold of this Amilcar only to realize it'll totalled and is hooked to a tow truck!

#Post 12 - King Ottokar's Sceptre - Syldavian gangsters on the run in their 1932 Chevy with the precious sceptre in their hands, with Tintin in hot pursuit in the King's Packard.

#Post 13 - Tintin in Tibet. A disgruntled cow unloads a petrified Haddock inside this Cadillac cab after taking him for a impromptu and insanely hilarious ride on it's back through the bylanes of old Delhi.

#Post 14 - The Calculus Affair. The elusive black Citroen 15 drives off as 57A, Route Saint de-Cergue blows up to bits. It was their handiwork.

#Post 15 - The Castifiore Emerald. An elated Captain loses control of his wheelchair which crashes down the front stairs of Marlinspike Hall with Calculus on board and smashes into the Doctor and his Citroen, who was standing with his back to the Captain, and bent inside the car. A detailed havoc ensures.

#Post 16 - The Broken Ear. Tintin looks on startled in disbelief because the car and it's occupants which he had been hunting down was something evidently different from this archaic Hotchkiss and it's octogenarian Doctor, although the registration numbers matched!

#Posts 17& 19 - The Black Island. Baddies Pushchov, his mate and his chauffeur Ivan pause for a moment before they plan to pull out a bound and gagged Tintin from the back seat of this Jag and push him off the cliff! The Humber was illustrated in older versions of the Black Island.

#Posts 10 & 18 - The Black Island. Actually this taxi carrying Tintin & Snowy was stopped by Puschov and co in their Jag, faking engine trouble, and it's driver was knocked down using a cosh. Later on Tintin was accosted and the scene followed. The Austin in Post 10 was used on earlier editions of The Black Island.

#Post 20 - Land of Black Gold. Thompson & Thomson doing the rounds of Sahara in their red Willys, only to realize that they're going round and round in circles. This includes their hilarious and slightly racist run-ins with sand storms, mirages and feisty locals.

#Post 21 - Destination Moon. Calculus shows off his brainchild to his best friends, from this blue Willys.

#Post 22 - Land of Black Gold. Tintin and the Captain make a run for it in the emir's car to save Abdullah, much to his displeasure.

#Post 23 - King Ottokar's Sceptre Gangsters looking for Tintin stop this poor, blabbering carriage driver who was supposedly carrying Tintin, but only to find the LaSalle zip past with the young reporter inside.

#Post 24 - The Blue Lotus. Tintin and his friend Chang take over this private Chrysler by force in Shanghai for a greater cause.

#Post 25 - Cigars of the Pharoh.

#Post 26 - Land of Black Gold. Tintin is kidnapped from the claws of the police by gas mask wearing baddies in the Morris 6.

#Post 27 - King Ottokar's Sceptre.

#Post 28 - King Ottokar's Sceptre. Tintin with His Majesty himself in his 1938 Packard.

#Post 29 - The Red Sea Sharks. Tintin on a hunch following the black Panhard in a taxi.

#Post 30 - The Calculus Affair. People watching all the fun in front Marlinspike Hall, all because of the mysterious glass breaking incidents. The word was spread by the bungling Thompson twins, even after taking their famed "mum's the word" motto in front of the Captain.

#Post 31 - The Broken Ear. Tintin takes off in this puny little car after a jailbreak where he was aided by the renegade Pablo, a long time aide of General Alcazar.

#Post 32 - The Seven Crystal Balls. Calculus gets kidnapped again. Word is out and the police are looking for a black Opel saloon. This is just a random Simca 5 pulled over by them to inquire.

#Post 33 - Land of Black Gold. The Siamese detective twins go undercover to prowl on the doctored fuel business and use the tow truck as a decoy, only to fail miserably and hilariously.

#Post 34 - The Calculus Affair. The twins arrive at Marlinspike Hall in their 2CV in a rather dramatic fashion, to investigate the mysterious glass breaking incidents all around and inside the property.

#Post 35 - The Crab with the Golden Claws. Tintin takes over the Renault cab and forces it's previous occupant out by scaring him with a rabies infested Snowy.

#Post 36 - Land of Black Gold. The Siamese twins trying to hold on to Abdullah's boy toy, with Tintin at the wheel.

#Post 37 - Tintin in America. Bobby Smiles gets away under the cops' noses in his Lombard!

A lot is yet to be covered, and I might just do it in the next couple of days.

On a different note, here's a frame from Tintin and the Picaros, where the Captain and Tintin are General Tapioca's honored guests and the Captain is escorted heavily to buy tobacco for himself,in the Presidential limousine(inspired by the Russian Zil and having trademark Kurvi-Tasch elements), much to his bemuse!

Ah the Lancia Aurelia, driven crazily by Arturo Benedetto.........on the chase for Il Povero Professore!
Delicious. I bought a scale model of this in the exact same colour at the Lancia Centenary in London in 2007.

I have all the Tintin books lovingly collected and preserved over the years since I was a small kid. Truly lovely books indeed!

My grand dad used to buy me whichever Tintin was available at the time. Used to cost Rs 12/- then became Rs 24/- and by then I had the whole lot. I got Land of the Soviets in Bruges, Belgium Tintin Store for 15 Euros some ten years ago. And Congo for some Rs 500 at Landmark. What a price difference fom the 1970's to the 2000's!

Re: Vintage & Classic Cars seen in Tintin Comics

Dear KPS, this now my new favourite thread. I grew up on Tintin comics. Actually my earliest memory of a bed-time story is my aunt reading out a Tintin comic to me. I was crazy about Tintin (and I still am!).

I remember that Tintin comic books were expensive and were priced around INR 100/- in the early 90s. I got to own only 5 (3 were bought for me after much pleading and sulking, and 2 came as gifts). There is magazine in South India called The Week, which used to run a page from a Tintin comic in each issue. I used wait for each issue, so that I can cut the page out and eventually make a book out of it. However, it seems that the magazine skipped a few pages at times and hence my plan failed.

Where is the Tintin Store in Singapore? Ive only been to the ones in Brussels, Bruges and London. Did not know there was one in Singapore! Glad there is though since this is so near to us. You do get some select official licensed Tintin merchandise in the Entertainment Store on Church Street Bangalore.
