Not only Adler Diplomat, but even Mercedes-Benz had wood-gas generator installed in their 170V models during the World War 2.

A Mercedes-Benz Type 170VG Army staff car with wood-gas generator, an innovative car developed and produced during 1939-43. The M 136G had a four-cylinder engine with a bore × stroke of 73.5 × 100mm. Only 11 of these prototypes were built.

I remember, late 40s-early 50s, during gasoline rationing, some private carrier trucks had a 'Coal Plant' installed behind the driver's cab. It produced gas that was used to power those Chevy trucks.

Not just James Bond, even Johnny common man could have amphibious cars. Wonder why it failed!
It was called the soybean car - essentially a tube frame with panels. The precursor to the Dolphin! With today's technology, this might be viable now.
For me, this was the weirdest invention: wrist steering wheels. WIth fly-by-wire and computerized controls, this or a joystick, should be the way to go in the future.

Volkswagen leads global automotive innovations, Tata Motors sole Indian OEM in Top 10.
This is according to a study by the Center of Automotive Management (CAM), an independent German institute for empirical automotive research and strategic advice.
