Maserati Ghibli

Moderators,

Request permission to start a thread on the Maserati Ghibli.
This Giugiaro designed GT debuted in 1967 and outsold its two most famous rivals the Lamborghini Miura and the Ferrai Daytona. An outstandingly handsome car, I'd like to discuss the following topics :

A. Design philosophy
B. Objective for manufacture
C. Any technological innovation in it
D. Production & sales figures
E. Predecessor & successor models
F. Ownership reports, especially from India
G. Surviving units
H. Any other snippet

Thank you & regards

If i remember right did'nt V.J.M. have the Merak and the Ghibli in India.

There also was a 80's or 90's Ghibli in Bombay. Similiar looking to this car unless i have got the model completely wrong.

This is the Ghibli-II which was released with 2L V6 engine which was manufactured around 1992.

The ones @wasif has posted are the Ghibli-I producted around 1967.

Ghibli-I was a real killer product, stopped production around 1969 because of the parent company being sold or taken over by Citroen at around 1968.
Ghibli-I had the pop-up head lamps which was unique design those times. I believe these were designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the same guy who designed FIAT Punto and Daewoo Matiz.

That car is not considered to be a pure Ghibli but a marketing trick to sell cars.

The cars with the "king of good times" are teh Merak and the Indy.

NO original Ghiblis around in India unfortunately.

Wasif sir, according to me marketing trick or no marketing trick Ghibli is a Ghibli right . You asked if there were any and i mentioned this car.

You are right if V.J.M's other car is not a Ghibli then there are no original Ghiblis of the 60's.

Point taken Speedy but whats with the "sir" thing plain old wasif will be much more appropriate.

BTW it was news to me to know that here is indeed a Ghibli 2 in India, the one you posted.

I was refering to the original car that was what anyone who speaks of the Ghibli is actually talking about. most people don't eveb know ther was a Ghibli 2 at all.

The blue car posted by speedy - There is a similar red one i have seen in Mumbai, but it is the biturbo two door coupe of 80's vintage replica of the one pictured below. Ghibli uses the same base/paltform/greenhouse

Lads,

Can we have inputs to discuss the (original) Ghibli ( the Tipo 115) please?

It was preceded by the 5000GT ( including the Shah of Persia) and succeeded by the Khamsin. For me the Guigiaro design is simple, with very clean, elegant lines.

Classic.
Timeless.
Not-in-your-face at all.
Possibly the definitive Maserati GT.

See pics here, which I had posted in the thread on the most beautiful car. elsewhere.
See the following link for more details: Maserati Ghibli

P.S. : Any Ghibli (Tipo 115) and other Masers in India? I had heard of a Mallya Merak and have seen two Quattroportes ( the new ones) in Santa CRuz and Andheri over the last year or so- one black and the other white.

Regards

What do you mean it was preceeded by the Shah of Iran ??

BTW teh Lamborghini Miura SVJ was actually developed on teh request of the Shah of Iran !

For me the best of the lot will always be the Ferrari Daytona followed by the Miura then the Ghibli and the Porsche 550, BMW 507 and the Jaguar E type series two.

The 5000GT was first built on a specific request for the Shah of Iran, so the car is termed the Shah of Persia ( not Iran). This car was bought later by American screen actor Nicholas Cage.
