The biggest cycling event kicks off on 1st July 2017. The Tour de France is always special because of the sheer size of the event and all the history associated with it. This will be 104th edition of the Grand Tour.

Refer following threads for detailed report of previous two editions.

If you are a busy bee (like most of us) then here’s a glimpse of what happened in last two years.

Best of Tour de France 2016
Last year’s edition was one of the best and most eventful in recent past. We saw multiple riders wearing yellow jersey for the first time including Cavendish and Sagan. Saw some heroics from the eventual tour winner Chris Froome and many other riders.

Cycling Weekly's Tour de France 2017 Essential Guide

2017 - The Teams
Most of the previous teams have been retained with few new names. Few team names have been changed owing to the new primary sponsors.

Total 22 World Tour Teams will participate in this edition.

A look at the Team names and Jerseys. Do comment which team is your favorite.

Teams to watch out for overall performance:
  • Team Sky (my personal favorite)
  • Moviestar Team
  • BMC Racing Team
  • AG2R LA Mondiale
  • Astana Pro Team
  • Cannondale Drapac Professional Cycling Team
  • Quick - Step Floors

All the teams have refreshed the Jersey design by making minor tweaks.

The jersey's of Lotto Jumbo (yellow) and Cannondale Team (green) are the most confusing as these colors are also used for race leaders jersey's. It will give hard time for viewers and especially commentators to spot the real leader(s)

2017 Contenders for Yellow Jersey

Chris Froom – Team Sky
Three time Tour de France winner have the best chance of repeat win this year. He has shown great form in other grand tours though he missed the podium in the recently concluded Critérium du Dauphiné.

re: Tour de France 2017 - The biggest cycling event of the year

Brief history of the Tour de France

Back in 1903, the idea of the Tour was dreamt up by French sports newspaper L’Auto as a publicity stunt to help increase its circulation. It not only fulfilled its objective, but also managed to destroy the rival paper of the time and become one of the most attractive events for competitive cyclists overnight.

Only the gutsy and the tough of the professional cycling world entered the 2,428 kms, 19-day event and the first champion, Maurice Garin, managed to beat 59 other cyclists to take the title by a margin of two hours and 49 minutes.

The Tour very nearly didn’t make it through to its second year with the amount of cheating involved. This was cheating of the non-chemical kind and involved riders catching trains, taking cars and dropping spikes to puncture opponent’s tyres.

Night stops, bike changes and technical help were against the rules of the Tour at this stage, so it’s not surprising that the sleep-deprived competitors were tempted to jump on the train every now and then.

Rather than cancelling the Tour, the officials only added more rules and more mountains making the challenge almost impossible and earning the organisers the label of ‘assassins’.

Now the race is very different with trainers, doctors and experts offering technical advice to every rider, not to mention the huge amounts of money wrapped up in team sponsorship.

Today, the Tour involves more riders, more kilometers and more controversy with competitors demanding the unimaginable from their bodies in the bid to get their hands on that yellow leader’s jersey.

Re: Tour de France 2017 - The biggest cycling event of the year

Criterium du Dauphine race take place prior to the Tour de France every year. This race is looked as preparation to the grand Tour.

Criterium du Dauphine

Overview

The Critérium du Dauphiné, before 2010 known as the Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré, is an annual cycling road race in the Dauphiné region in the southeast of France. The race is run over eight days during the first half of June. It is part of the UCI World Tour calendar and counts as one of the foremost races in the lead-up to the Tour de France in July, along with the Tour de Suisse in the latter half of June.

2017 Edition

Running from Sunday June 4th to 11th 2017, the 69th Critérium du Dauphiné will be made up of 8 stages and will cover a total distance of 1155 kilometers.

The Critérium du Dauphiné marks the traditional the run-in to the Tour de France, and so all eyes are on how the top contenders ride.
Lasting for eight days, the Critérium du Dauphiné is a sort of compressed version of the Tour, with a variation of Alpine mountains, time-trials, flat and hilly stages held across France’s terrain that resembles what awaits the riders come July.

This race is often a key focus for Chris Froome and Team Sky: not only have the team won five of the past seven editions (twice through Bradley Wiggins in 2011 and 2012 and three times through Froome in 2013, 2015 and 2016), they also tend to dominate the race with imposing performances across the whole team, with their supporting riders often outperforming other teams’ leaders.

However this year Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) broke Chris Froome’s (Team Sky) dominance over the Critérium du Dauphiné taking the win on the final stage.
After an early lead was taken by Thomas De Gendet (Lotto-Soudal) in stage one, it wasn’t until a decisive victory by Richie Porte (BMC) in stage four’s individual time trials turned the tables. Porte went on to secure the leader’s jersey in stage six despite losing out on the stage win in a sprint-out against eventual winner Jakob Fuglsang.

Porte went into the final day with a one minute lead over his rivals but on the short 115km stage long range attacks was the order of the day. Fuglsang broke from the main group leaving Porte isolated behind him. Despite working hard to bring himself within a minute behind Fuglsang, the Dane took the stage win and with it 10 bonus seconds, enough to take the 2017 Critérium du Dauphiné title.

Froome, who had started the race as the favorite, missed out on a podium place by one second losing out to Dan Martin (Quick Step Floors) after the Irish rider came second on the day giving him enough bonus seconds to leap frog the Brit.

Re: Tour de France 2017 - The biggest cycling event of the year

Just one day to go to the start of the grand tour. Here is the official teaser video;

As the yearly tradition, Team presentation was held at Dusseldorf.

Tour de France is not only won by the best cyclist but the race is played off the road as well. Everyone has started playing the mind games

The German capital of fashion hosted a dress show on Burgplatz just outside the town hall with all 198 contenders of the 104th Tour de France riding their bike throughout the old town of Düsseldorf in the middle of the crowd. The favourite color of the peloton this summer is white. Team Sky, Trek-Segafredo and Katusha-Alpecin turned up with their newly designed uniforms that are predominantly white.

Thanks for the images from the Team Presentation!
Isnt there any TV coverage in India this year? I can seem to find any :(
Missed day-1 already.

Found this tweet from Discovery Sport,
"will be showcasing best of everyday's action in a 30 minutes show starting July 2nd at 06:30 PM IST."

Unfortunately Ten Sports agreement to broadcast TDF ended in 2016 and they haven't renewed. So for Indian viewer the live coverage is not available on TV

Even I missed the first stage. Since yesterday I am trying to find out the best options of live stream. See following link, the best I have got so far
http://www.steephill.tv/tour-de-france/#live

France.tv is free and rest all are paid. However the commentary is in french
I will keep looking for some other options. If anyone knows better option, please share.

Found this link which streams consistently. Though the language is Spanish, it's better than France TV.

BTW, Froome and Bardet were involved in crash with 30 kms to go. They have rejoined the peleton.

Re: Tour de France 2017 - The biggest cycling event of the year

This is my first time watching the Tour. Boy what a finish!
Shows the importance of team work also. The riders who were leading the race till the last 2 miles were left in the dust by the peloton.

EDIT: Thanks mp, for starting this thread!

That was a horrific crash in Stage 1 and it has ended Valverde's tour. Busted kneecap? He hit the barriers hard.

Welshman Geraint Thomas blasts opening time trial of the 2017 Tour de France to wear the yellow jersey for the first time in his career
Geraint Thomas (Team Sky) won the opening time trial stage of the 2017 Tour de France, conquering the treacherously wet roads of Düsseldorf, Germany, on Saturday.

It’s the Welshman’s first Grand Tour stage victory, and he will wear the coveted yellow jersey of race leader for the first time in his career. The result goes some way to compensate for Thomas’s disappointment in the Giro d’Italia in May, where he was forced to withdraw after suffering crash injuries.

Thomas stormed through the 14-kilometre course in a time of 16 minutes and four seconds, five seconds ahead of second-placed Stefan Küng (BMC Racing) and seven seconds ahead of Sky team-mate and former time trial world champion Vasil Kiryienka in third.

Home favourite and current time trial world champion Tony Martin (Katusha-Alpecin) placed fourth, eight seconds adrift of Thomas.

The torrential rain made for testing conditions throughout the duration of the stage. With numerous tight corners strewn with slippery road markings, it was almost inevitable that riders would tumble.

Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) suffered a heavy fall into the roadside crash barriers, and withdrew from the race with a suspected broken kneecap. It is a blow for Quintana to lose his most valued team-mate so early in the race. Bahrain-Merida’s Ion Izagirre also crashed out.

Rick Zabel (Katusha-Alpecin), Patrick Bevan (Cannondale-Drapac), Tony Gallopin (Lotto-Soudal), Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo) and George Bennett (LottoNL-Jumbo) were among those other riders to take a spill, but all managed to finish the stage.

Stage summary video:

All the crashes from Stage 1. Valverde's crash was most horrific.

Stage Result

Germany's Marcel Kittel claimed his tenth stage victory at the Tour de France since 2013. He won the bunch sprint at quai des Ardennes in Liège ahead of French champion Arnaud Démare and André Greipel who remains ahead of his compatriot on the victory tally with eleven stage wins. Chris Froome and Romain Bardet crashed but finished in the peloton like Geraint Thomas who retained the yellow jersey.

From the gun, Thomas Boudat (Direct Energie) initiated the first breakaway of the 104th Tour de France, quickly joined by Taylor Phinney (Cannondale-Drapac), Yoann Offredo (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) and Laurent Pichon (Fortuneo-Oscaro). Their advantage didn't exceed 3.25. All four escapees were debutants at the Tour de France this year but the bunch took them very seriously with the teams of the sprinters setting a steady pace at the front: Lotto-Soudal, Quick-Step Floors, Dimension Data, FDJ, Katusha-Alpecin…

Taylor Phinney in the polka dot jersey

For his Tour debut, Phinney was smart enough to sprint at Grafenberg, km 6.5, to score one point in the King of the Mountains. He also outsprinted Pichon at Côte d'Olne with 20.5km to go to get the first polka dot jersey of the 2017 Tour de France, six years after another American, Tejay van Garderen, wore it.

Breakaway caught with 1km to go

It was raining badly when the peloton left Germany for Belgium for the last hour of stage 2. With 31km to go, Chris Froome (Sky) and Romain Bardet (AG2R-La Mondiale) were involved in a heavy crash but they made it across seven kilometers further. With 15km to go, Phinney and Offredo forged on while Pichon and Boudat were reeled in. Offredo was awarded the price of the most aggressive rider of the day. The duo still had 30 seconds lead with 4km to go but they got reeled in 1km before the end. Marcel Kittel (Quick-Step Floors) didn't have a real train to lead him out but he made his way to victory in the middle of the road to outsprint Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain-Merida) and André Greipel (Lotto-Soudal) who were leading the charge on the left side. Démare was on Kittel's side to take the second position. This is the 21st victory by a German rider at the Tour de France since 2013.

Stage Summary

Starting from Philippe Gilbert's native town of Verviers, stage 3 is much hillier than stage 2. A visit will be paid to the car racing circuit of Spa-Francorchamps after 20km of racing through the Ardennes on the roads of Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the oldest of the big classics. 130 kilometres of the course are in Luxemburg, the country of the recently retired Schleck brothers. One Luxemburger, Ben Gastauer of AG2R-La Mondiale, is part of the 195-rider strong peloton. Everyone else who is not familiar with this small country will realize it's not a flattish one. Stage 3 is long too: 212.5km. It might be a hard day for some riders. It's a land of opportunities as well. The finish on French soil in Longwy atop the 1.6km long climb of the Religieuses surely pleases Peter Sagan as much as the hill to La Glacerie in Cherbourg-en-Cotentin at the end of stage 2 last year. The finish suits Gilbert too, and many others who would be well inspired to make the race hard earlier on.

‘I just lost a bit of skin’: Froome happy to finish relatively unscathed on Tour de France stage two
Chris Froome says that “everyone’s ok” after a crash on the wet roads at the end of Tour de France stage two to Liège.

Team Sky‘s leader fell with four of his team-mates – yellow jersey Geraint Thomas, Luke Rowe, Christian Knees and Michal Kwiatkowski – with 30.3 kilometres to race.

“There are no injuries thankfully, I just lost a little bit of skin,” Froome said.

He arrived at the bus with the back side of his black Castelli shorts ripped. He climbed on the bus and returned outside to warm down before taking one question from the press.

‘It was raining but my day was still awesome’: Geraint Thomas relishes first day in yellow at Tour de France

The second stage of the Tour de France may have been run under heavy rain for much of its duration, but that did little to dampen the enjoyment of Geraint Thomas (Team Sky), riding from Düsseldorf to Liège with the yellow jersey on his back

Leading the race by five seconds after winning the opening time trial, Thomas enjoyed a relatively easy day in yellow, bouncing up quickly from a crash with 30km to go which took down team leader Chris Froome.

“It was a really special day to walk off the bus in yellow,” Thomas said after crossing the line in Liège.

Marcel Kittel: ‘The only way I can win the green jersey is if Peter Sagan gets sick’

Marcel Kittel (Quick-Step Floors) may have taken the green jersey after stage two of the Tour de France, but he thinks there is little chance of a pure sprinter like him taking it all the way to Paris unless woe befalls Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe).

Sagan has won the points classification on each of the previous five editions of the Tour, and is looking to add a sixth title that will draw him level with Erik Zabel’s record for green jersey wins.

Speaking after winning stage two of the Tour into Liège, which also gave him an early 25 point lead at the top of the points classification, Kittel said that as the system currently works there is little chance of him wearing green in Paris.

Team Sky rule out change of tactics after Geraint Thomas takes yellow at Tour de France

Team Sky will continue to use Geraint Thomas as planned at the Tour de France after the Welshman took yellow in the opening time trial in Düsseldorf.

The 31-year-old won the stage by five seconds from Stefan Küng (BMC Racing) with Sky team leader Chris Froome sixth, 13 seconds back.

Even I missed the first stage. Since yesterday I am trying to find out the best options of live stream. See following link, the best I have got so far

..
Found this link which streams consistently. Though the language is Spanish, it's better than France TV.

Same here. I have been following the race for so many years now. Phil and Paul commentary is one of the sweetest thing you hear. I'm going to miss it.

This year is going to be frustrating. Really surprised to see no sports channel broadcasting the grand sporting event

Thanks for the appreciation. Will try my best to capture the tour. Since I'm not watching the tour live, unable to comment on the stage analysis and have to rely on readymade content.
