| Tour de France 2017 - The biggest cycling event of the year  The biggest cycling event kicks off on 1st July 2017. The Tour de France is always special because of the sheer size of the event and all the history associated with it. This will be 104th edition of the Grand Tour. Refer following threads for detailed report of previous two editions. Tour de France 2016 Tour de France 2015 If you are a busy bee (like most of us) then here’s a glimpse of what happened in last two years. Best of Tour de France 2016 Last year’s edition was one of the best and most eventful in recent past. We saw multiple riders wearing yellow jersey for the first time including Cavendish and Sagan. Saw some heroics from the eventual tour winner Chris Froome and many other riders. The race will start in Dusseldorf, Germany on Saturday July 1 to Sunday July 23 2017, the 104th Tour de France will be made up of 21 stages and will cover a massive total distance of 3,540 kilometers. All the teams have refreshed the Jersey design by making minor tweaks. The jersey's of Lotto Jumbo (yellow) and Cannondale Team (green) are the most confusing as these colors are also used for race leaders jersey's. It will give hard time for viewers and especially commentators to spot the real leader(s)  2017 Contenders for Yellow Jersey Chris Froom – Team Sky Three time Tour de France winner have the best chance of repeat win this year. He has shown great form in other grand tours though he missed the podium in the recently concluded Critérium du Dauphiné. | re: Tour de France 2017 - The biggest cycling event of the year Brief history of the Tour de France Back in 1903, the idea of the Tour was dreamt up by French sports newspaper L’Auto as a publicity stunt to help increase its circulation. It not only fulfilled its objective, but also managed to destroy the rival paper of the time and become one of the most attractive events for competitive cyclists overnight. Only the gutsy and the tough of the professional cycling world entered the 2,428 kms, 19-day event and the first champion, Maurice Garin, managed to beat 59 other cyclists to take the title by a margin of two hours and 49 minutes. The Tour very nearly didn’t make it through to its second year with the amount of cheating involved. This was cheating of the non-chemical kind and involved riders catching trains, taking cars and dropping spikes to puncture opponent’s tyres. Night stops, bike changes and technical help were against the rules of the Tour at this stage, so it’s not surprising that the sleep-deprived competitors were tempted to jump on the train every now and then. Rather than cancelling the Tour, the officials only added more rules and more mountains making the challenge almost impossible and earning the organisers the label of ‘assassins’. Now the race is very different with trainers, doctors and experts offering technical advice to every rider, not to mention the huge amounts of money wrapped up in team sponsorship. Today, the Tour involves more riders, more kilometers and more controversy with competitors demanding the unimaginable from their bodies in the bid to get their hands on that yellow leader’s jersey.         |

Criterium du Dauphine Overview The Critérium du Dauphiné, before 2010 known as the Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré, is an annual cycling road race in the Dauphiné region in the southeast of France. The race is run over eight days during the first half of June. It is part of the UCI World Tour calendar and counts as one of the foremost races in the lead-up to the Tour de France in July, along with the Tour de Suisse in the latter half of June. 2017 Edition Running from Sunday June 4th to 11th 2017, the 69th Critérium du Dauphiné will be made up of 8 stages and will cover a total distance of 1155 kilometers. The Critérium du Dauphiné marks the traditional the run-in to the Tour de France, and so all eyes are on how the top contenders ride. Lasting for eight days, the Critérium du Dauphiné is a sort of compressed version of the Tour, with a variation of Alpine mountains, time-trials, flat and hilly stages held across France’s terrain that resembles what awaits the riders come July.    This race is often a key focus for Chris Froome and Team Sky: not only have the team won five of the past seven editions (twice through Bradley Wiggins in 2011 and 2012 and three times through Froome in 2013, 2015 and 2016), they also tend to dominate the race with imposing performances across the whole team, with their supporting riders often outperforming other teams’ leaders. However this year Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) broke Chris Froome’s (Team Sky) dominance over the Critérium du Dauphiné taking the win on the final stage. After an early lead was taken by Thomas De Gendet (Lotto-Soudal) in stage one, it wasn’t until a decisive victory by Richie Porte (BMC) in stage four’s individual time trials turned the tables. Porte went on to secure the leader’s jersey in stage six despite losing out on the stage win in a sprint-out against eventual winner Jakob Fuglsang. Porte went into the final day with a one minute lead over his rivals but on the short 115km stage long range attacks was the order of the day. Fuglsang broke from the main group leaving Porte isolated behind him. Despite working hard to bring himself within a minute behind Fuglsang, the Dane took the stage win and with it 10 bonus seconds, enough to take the 2017 Critérium du Dauphiné title. Froome, who had started the race as the favorite, missed out on a podium place by one second losing out to Dan Martin (Quick Step Floors) after the Irish rider came second on the day giving him enough bonus seconds to leap frog the Brit.  |

Here is the official teaser video; As the yearly tradition, Team presentation was held at Dusseldorf. Tour de France is not only won by the best cyclist but the race is played off the road as well. Everyone has started playing the mind games The German capital of fashion hosted a dress show on Burgplatz just outside the town hall with all 198 contenders of the 104th Tour de France riding their bike throughout the old town of Düsseldorf in the middle of the crowd. The favourite color of the peloton this summer is white. Team Sky, Trek-Segafredo and Katusha-Alpecin turned up with their newly designed uniforms that are predominantly white. However the commentary is in french  I will keep looking for some other options. If anyone knows better option, please share. Found this link which streams consistently. Though the language is Spanish, it's better than France TV. http://verdirectotv.com/tv/deportes/teledeporte.html BTW, Froome and Bardet were involved in crash with 30 kms to go. Results Welshman Geraint Thomas blasts opening time trial of the 2017 Tour de France to wear the yellow jersey for the first time in his career Geraint Thomas (Team Sky) won the opening time trial stage of the 2017 Tour de France, conquering the treacherously wet roads of Düsseldorf, Germany, on Saturday. It’s the Welshman’s first Grand Tour stage victory, and he will wear the coveted yellow jersey of race leader for the first time in his career. The result goes some way to compensate for Thomas’s disappointment in the Giro d’Italia in May, where he was forced to withdraw after suffering crash injuries. Thomas stormed through the 14-kilometre course in a time of 16 minutes and four seconds, five seconds ahead of second-placed Stefan Küng (BMC Racing) and seven seconds ahead of Sky team-mate and former time trial world champion Vasil Kiryienka in third. Home favourite and current time trial world champion Tony Martin (Katusha-Alpecin) placed fourth, eight seconds adrift of Thomas. The torrential rain made for testing conditions throughout the duration of the stage. With numerous tight corners strewn with slippery road markings, it was almost inevitable that riders would tumble. Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) suffered a heavy fall into the roadside crash barriers, and withdrew from the race with a suspected broken kneecap. It is a blow for Quintana to lose his most valued team-mate so early in the race. Bahrain-Merida’s Ion Izagirre also crashed out. Rick Zabel (Katusha-Alpecin), Patrick Bevan (Cannondale-Drapac), Tony Gallopin (Lotto-Soudal), Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo) and George Bennett (LottoNL-Jumbo) were among those other riders to take a spill, but all managed to finish the stage. He won the bunch sprint at quai des Ardennes in Liège ahead of French champion Arnaud Démare and André Greipel who remains ahead of his compatriot on the victory tally with eleven stage wins. A visit will be paid to the car racing circuit of Spa-Francorchamps after 20km of racing through the Ardennes on the roads of Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the oldest of the big classics. 130 kilometres of the course are in Luxemburg, the country of the recently retired Schleck brothers.
