Sorry, but this still does not help much.
A guy driving a BMW would easily attribute a Maruti/Hyndai as a tin-can. But that does not make it so.

Was looking for some specifics. e.g. on a Bianchi you can ride for 10 hours without getting a sore butt, but on a BSA Photon you can not ride more than 15 minutes without hurting your butt/back. Just a fictional example. But would prefer specifics like that.

If you can pick a few parameters (like comfort, weight, durability etc) and then compare a 10K INR bicycle with a 20K INR bicycle on a scale of 1-10 (10 being the best and 1 being the worst), that would really help to put things in perspective.

Never mind, I think I am asking for too much! Converting abstract perceptions/point-of-views into a quantified comparision matrix is just too much work.

Read quite a few posts from the link you have provided. An early conclusion is, I need to spend a decent amount of time reading/researching before I take the first step. Never really thought it would be such a serious business. Wish life was simpler. Was anyway planning to spend a weekend researching. All hopes of getting a bicycle in next 1-2 weeks are dashed. But that's ok. Would wait till knowledge and wallet give a OK.

All Cycling enthusiasts... I recently bought a city bike for my Wife and it is a Falter C 3.0 Wave 28" model with reverse brake and internal Shimano nexus gears. I'm planning to get one for myself too. I've heard that the Kalkhoff's are good for quality but on the other side also a bit expensive. I'm thinking to get a E-Bike. Anyone here having experience owning an E-Bike? Any suggestions on the battery life and the performance of E-Bikes in general?

Finally made the decision, went ahead and bought the Schwinn Sporterra Sport on 29-March-2012 from Track & Trail, Lajpat Nagar, New Delhi. The final decision was between the Schwinn 411 24 speed & the Sporterra Sport.
This was because of availability of cycles and the minimum requirement of Alivio for the rear. Got it for 23k INR. The prices have already been raised. The bike is butter smooth, rode it for roughly 10kms on day 1, felt great!! hopefully I'd be able to do longer runs in the future.

I had wanted to buy a geared bicycle that my family could use (mostly by my son). My initial plan was to buy a hybrid, but could not get the model that I wanted. Finally bought an MTB since I may not be cycling for longer than 10-15 km a day. I had gone back to cycling last year and was doing roughly 10 km a day in the mornings (mostly inside Pune University). And now plan to start that again.

There are two threaded holes in the frame close to the rear hub (see in the picture below). Any idea what they are for?


Also I noticed some oil on the front fork (as seen in the picture below). Is this normal?

Talking about specifics, I bought a Hercules Act110 S (steel) for about 7k all inclusive( lock, bottle holder etc,.) in mid 2009. First few months I used to ride about 14 Km one way. And later even rode upto 30Km one way. Butt pain was there but not anything 'specific' to sub 10k bike. I guess a 90kg guy riding even a 25K bike does feel butt pain after a 10km ride for the first few days.

So, enjoyed the bike without any issues except one puncture, for about 3-4 months. Then as summer approached, put it aside and got addicted to comfort of car. Later when I took it out after a few months, the base of the seat (plastic part) had a crack, the left side crank lever became loose (my negligence) and finally got rounded by grinding on the crank shaft. Couldn't get exact matching lever but got something which would fit ok and stay on. After another gap of 4 months, took it out on summer evening for about 10km both way ride without sweat, literally.

Though it is claimed to be of 'steel' , rust is seen on seat post(stem). Such niggles aside, bike is still running smooth and like new. Even the wheels are true after this long (1.5 yrs). I think Hercules stopped producing Act110 s , thats what I heard. End of sub 10K hybrids.

So, making a sub 10K good quality hybrid is not impossible nor is it a bad choice to buy such one, but I wonder then why they are stopped.

Yep, just finished reading it. I have heard of all those horror stories and now got to read them and see the pics. But, the common thing among all of them is they are 'mag/aluminum alloys' pathetically engineered.
Call it hunch or ignorance or halfknowledge whatever, but when I bought the bike, I thought steel is more flexible and shock absorbing than mag/al alloy and fearing how am going to torture the bike under my weight, I choose steel though the regular act110 was available for even 8.7k then.
I guess I made a better choice

Done about 40 kms in a week. I use an iPhone app called Cyclemeter Pro based on GPS. The distance covered is quiet accurate as I cross check with Swift' ODO on my way to office and back. Has anyone used/using this? Because on the last ride when I checked my fastest speed it showed 75 km/h
I don't buy it.
