Re: Bicycle Servicing | Repair shops, FNGs and the sorts

Hello everyone. Much appreciation for this thread
I have a Scott Speedster 10 2019 edition which I bought in Aug 2020. Now due to the shop, I bought it from, The Bike Shop (south Delhi) being far off and the pain of fitting my speedster into a sedan and then having a service turnaround time of 48 hrs. I made the cardinal sin of missing my first free service and have just about managed to run 500 km till now . I hear some tik- tik noise from the front derailleur. Cannot say for certain what could be the cause. Any expert here can shed some light? No service has been done to date.
Also, I would be grateful if you can suggest some expert service providers in Faridabad (NCR) area. Thanks in advance.

Re: Bicycle Servicing | Repair shops, FNGs and the sorts

I've shared my experiences (The Bicycles thread) getting my (now sold) ACT 110 restored..

Since then I've had a road bike and a hybrid (Cannondale Quick 4).

For all my repair work, I've gone to Rafique at Jayant cycles Jayanagar since early 2019. Since Jayant doesn't stock parts, I pick up the parts online, BOTS store, Wheelsports, Cadence90, Shah cycles, RR cycles, Track & Trail, Mastermind, Probikers, Cyclestation, Giant, etc etc

Service places I can recommend-
Rafique at Jayant
BOTS
Cadence90
Wheelsports
Crankmeister
Cyclestation

Others will have had varying experiences but most cyclists in Bangalore will have some experience with the above..

There are @ your doorstep services but will have to dig up some of those numbers from various whatsapp groups and ask some friends.

If you haven't serviced your bike since Aug'20, then it's about time you got it done. I wouldn't worry too much about missing the free service now, but I'd get the bike to a decent shop and get it checked/serviced (let them advise what is needed). As for the noise, might be the gear settings not aligned so one of the scenarios could be possibly adjustment of the limiting screws on the front derailleur to prevent it rubbing against the chain but this is just armchair analysis.

Reach out to riders in and around Gurgaon (say via local rider contacts or reach out to rides/riders you see in Strava) and drop a note to them. One or two of them should reply back with options - that with google reviews should solve the problem for now.

Thanks for the suggestion @ninja
Yes indeed will get the service done soonest. Maybe I should just head out to the shop I bought it from.
Hopefully, there is no major damage to the front derailleur.

Recently I got a general lube service/ check up/ fine tuning including headset greasing etc., of my bike, a Btwin Rockrider 5.3
Good service, Rs 299 charged

Re: Bicycle Servicing | Repair shops, FNGs and the sorts

Thanks Ninja for starting this thread, quite useful. Now it's my turn to share my recent bike servicing experience.

There were no major issues with bike. Only the front gear shifting had become a bit hard & there were minor creaks coming from the handle bar. Went to the nearby shop, CycleRepublic at Ravet. He gave me 3 options:
  • Running repair - INR 700/- (replacement parts cost extra)
  • General Service - INR 1000/- (replacement parts cost extra)
  • Full Service - INR 1500/- (replacement parts cost extra)
I went for the last option of full service.

Besides the full servicing as listed in the picture above, parts replaced were hub cones and steel balls (front and rear). I didn't go for chain & tyre replacement, the service guy mentioned that these could easily last for another 1000km. He checked with the tool for chain elongation and observed it within limits. May be I will replace them next year before the rainy season.

I took a trial and everything looked fine. I paid the bill of INR 1950/- & returned back home in the evening. Around 8:00pm I thought of taking another trial near my home. Suddenly the front gear stopped working, chain got stuck in 1st gear and won't upshift. I took the cycle again to the shop. When he checked the gear shifter cable he found it to be snapped inside the shifter. Replaced it with a new one. He was asking for INR 250/-, but I told that when I gave the cycle for service it was working fine and while oiling the cable he should have noticed it and pre-informed me. He said while oiling they don't open the shifter assembly. Finally settled for INR 200/-. So total service cost came to INR 2150/-

Yesterday did a 30km ride and everything looks fine for now.

Re: Bicycle Servicing | Repair shops, FNGs and the sorts

Sharing one setup's info started by a fellow cycling enthusiast. Folks from Pune can check out.

PUNE: Velocraft Sports | Checkout pricing here

Pretty new setup started by two ex-Decathlon guys, and highly experienced cyclists Suchith and Sujit. Sujit also competed a trip of cycling all over the country, over a period of six months.

They provide in-store and home visit services. One can also book an appointment here.

Their setup is equipped with tools to service high end bikes and also have a dedicated cycling wash station. Wash and lube products used are from Muc-off.

Last time I visited they were also undertaking a complete restoration of one bike. Paint stripping and repainting, the whole works, so one can visit them for that too if interested.

Would appreciate if someone has an idea of a good FNG which carries out jobs at reasonable prices in Mangalore. Jyothi cycles in Kadri does a good job of ripping off, thanks to lack of cycling stores around.

After my coast to coast Karnataka trip, my Cannondale hybrid was left in Chennai for the last 6 months but unfortunately was lying unused during this time. Coastal city with no usage over such a period showed it's effect on the cycle; in desperate need of a a full strip down service. Over the last few months, I had asked my father to get it serviced but it fell on deaf ears so finally when I had time to be in town, I took it to the guys at VeloDoctor for a full strip down service. Over the years, they now had store presence at two locations - Anna Nagar and ECR. The ECR outlet is a partnership with the existing Bikerz Sports outlet who use it as a sales shop while these guys run a servicing shop in the back.

A day later with some additional parts changed (chain, crankset, pedals), the cycle was as good as new. The hit to the pocket was a lot more than usual but the 6 months of mismanagement was more to blame for that. No complaints - workmanship was as good as the last experience.
