Vintage and classic Bicycles in India

Vintage and Classic Bicycles are increasingly becoming highly collectible in India and I felt a thread was required to document these beauties.

Find attached a photograph of a late 19th Century bicycle which was found quite recently in Ahmednagar District. Today it is displayed in the museum at Ahmednagar. It has markings on the front however I could not Decipher them clearly. The only marking I could decipher on the plate was was "Stuttgart".

Dear Amol, John,Rehaan - I have a 1960 Raleigh Humber bicycle with me. It was brought to Mumbai by Captain Jussawalla from England in 1960 in an Air India aircraft. He used to stay in a bungalow in Andheri (West). He passed away in an air crash in 1966. The bicycle was in his bungalow. My father bought it for me in 1972 when I was in the tenth standard. They were asking for 500 rupees, my father said 400 rupees (I was on tenterhooks), finally settled for 450 rupees. My father cycled down from Andheri to Dadar in 1972. I used to take it to my college SBM Polytechnic & then VJTI very regularly. It has the original Sturmey Archer 3 speed gearbox with the thin cable shifter, a hub dynamo, a light which can be alternately run on the dynamo or on 3 normal size battery cells placed in a cylinder attached to the frame. It also has a pump which catches on two arrow heads on the frame. The best part is that it has a steering lock, which can lock the handle in 3 positions, LH side, Centre or RH side. I still have the original key with WILMOT UNION BREEDEN written on it. It had whitewall tyres but some mischeivous guy spoilt them in 1973. Since then it does not have whitewall tyres. It has a full enclosed chain cover. As of today, it is lying in dismantled condition in my loft. It now belongs to my dearest sons Cyrus and Darayus. Obviously, we shall never ever sell it. I will be very happy to see it in running condition once again. I would love to ride it someday. The very soft "click click click " of the Sturmey Archer gearbox is a delight to hear. The free rolling was so good that I used to free wheel for quite good distances. The balance was perfect. An excellent product of a bygone era!

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

Here is my recent find from Bangalore.
I was visiting my friend and suddenly he got a call from one guy saying this cycle is for sale, we waited for 20 minutes and the guy came riding this beauty. Just like... love at first sight, now its mine.

Its 1951 Raleigh, with drum brakes, hub dynamo and 3 speed gear (no name visible though).

Wow Wow Wow ... It's amazing to see fellow vintage bicycle riders here. I was the one who started unusual restoration of a non-bhp two wheeler (bicycle) two months ago in here, now seeing the bicycles raining here.

Here is my Cycle (just recording it in this thread)

1949 Humber made by Sen-Raleigh Industries India Ltd with Sturmey Archer AG dynohub (3speed), Hercumatic gearlever (sturmey archer made it for Hercules), Sturmey Archer front drum brake, Miller headlight dome, Miller dynomo (failback), brass bell and a hand pump, Brooks saddle seat are the few High lights of my Bicycle.

More details here: http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/pre-19...ish-cycle.html

Very soon my cycle is going to have a white wall tyre which is already arrived under my custody.

While not a bicycle, this tricycle (earlier posted elsewhere on the forum) should find some fans here

It is a Singer Challenge No.1 tricycle. 1880ish and was in Panna M.P. now safe in Delhi. Its track rod and links are missing.

This beauty is BSA Paratrooper!, many BSA PT's were scrapped & sold from Jabalpur Army Yards, I suppose @ early '80s.
