Have you referred Indian blue book? Of course few ads from olx will give you a good benchmark to begin with. All the best.

Re: Volkswagen Polo 1.2L GT TSI : Official Review

Dear Forum members,
I am in the market for a hatchback for my father. He is not fond of sedans, he likes smaller powerful car with reasonably good build quality. Current car he drives is Getz petrol, which is now 10 years old. The new GT TSI is priced at 10.6 lacs on road in ahmedabad. Today i came across this sparingly used Feb-2018 red GT TSI with 10000 kms on ODO. Manufacturing is Dec-2017. Dealer is asking for 8.75 lacs, which is slightly negotiable. We plan to trade off our Getz with this, which will fetch abour 1 lac or 1.25 lac max, considering a specially cared bhpian car. What should be a sweet deal? Below are pics.

I cannot say what a sweet price is. But, as per my guess the dealer must have bought it for somewhere between 70-75%(7.4L-7.95L) of the OTR price. If you are content with the condition of the car and willing to buy, you may have to start negotiating from 7.5L.

Re: ARTICLE: How to buy a *USED* Car in India

All,

Is the team-bhp orange book value accurate? I checked price for Corolla Altis 2015 JS trim. The price quoted is very low than what the seller is quoting here.
Also price calc doesnt seem to take location as input. So not sure whether I can rely on that.

I tried checking Indian blue book/ carwale also. It says it doesnt have price for that model :-(

Any help appreciated.

Thanks in Advance

Use the tbhp calculator price. Then check the price on carwale.com which is a dealer price. You will generally find that the price you end up paying is an average of these two prices, or thereabouts.

The seller will probably over-quote expecting that buyers will bargain.

If you don't have price for that trim on Carwale check for similar trims from another year and approximate.

Re: ARTICLE: How to buy a *USED* Car in India

Hey Guys,
I am looking to buy a well maintained BMW 535i
But whichever used car dealer I talk to, replies me with "sir I have never seen a 535i in my life".

Can someone direct me to someone who has a 535i and wants to sell it now or in near future.

FYI
Spoken to Quick Cars as well. Got the same reaction from Amit.

Re: ARTICLE: How to buy a *USED* Car in India

I was recently browsing through the website of Wheels Wisdom to check their used car inspection offering and came across the below checklist. Looks like a comprehensive list and might be helpful for anyone looking for a used car. A lot of items we can check for ourselves but for a few we might need help of a mechanic/specialist.

With half a lakh rupees gap between the seller's quote and the buyer's comfort zone, I was forced to step in. The seller is a colleague and the prospective buyer an acquaintance - owner of an eatery where we have daily dose of tea. So, it was a very tight rope for me to walk when i went to test drive the car.

As soon as I turned on the ignition, I felt something was amiss. There were a lot of vibrations and noticeable number of skipped beats. A thorough inspection of the engine bay showed no red flags. A short drive convinced me that there could be some skeletons hidden somewhere which the owner himself could be unaware of. On top of it, the car was serviced just a few days ago.

I spoke to my colleague and requested him to get the car checked thoroughly before selling so as to avoid any bad blood in the future. He got a bit offended by this but I couldn't be less sincere. The buyer was also apprised of my apprehension and advised the same.

Keeping the current condition of the car in mind, a price in the range if 85-95k seemed appropriate.

Two days later, I saw a mechanic poring over the engine bay and thought someone is getting the car checked up. Sadly, he was there because the car wasn't starting at all. After going through all possible trouble areas, the mechanic opened up the spark plugs and there they were - completely smeared in oil. It was then that the colleague told me of the head gasket, coolant and engine oil replaced during the last service carried out a few days earlier at an FNG in his native place .

The mechanic diagnosed the problem to be an improperly seated/sealed head gasket and o rings. Fortunately, this happened before the transaction could take place. The car was towed away, repaired and sold to someone else for 95k.

Re: ARTICLE: How to buy a *USED* Car in India

I am being offered a 2015 Verna for 5 lacs. Seller claims it is run only 28k. Seems like a good deal until you get to the details - the current owner is the 3rd owner(in three years!), he has modified it to CNG - which I will have to get reconverted.

Does this deal seem to good to be true? What are the things to watch out for?

A non factory fitted CNG is one thing to watch out for already . Leave this vehicle alone.

Re: ARTICLE: How to buy a *USED* Car in India

How old is considered old for a 2nd gen Endeavour? I am getting a 2011 AT 4x2 done 72K kms, for sale by the owner and a 2014 registered but 13 manufactured 4x2 AT done 34k kms, this one through dealer. The 2011 is for 7L and I plan to offer 12.2 for the new one but I am not sure if it is worth twice the price?
I am of the opinion that the Endeavour is rock solid and 7 years and 72k should not be a lot for it.
Would appreciate any advice on this.

There is no way that vehicle has run less than 100k kms. People only get CNG fitted if they have a high usage. It is not worth the hassle unless you want to run it on CNG yourself.

Re: ARTICLE: How to buy a *USED* Car in India

Hi All,

I currently own a 12 year old Hyundai Santro that is still going strong. I use it for the city and running errands.
I also do have a 2009 Honda city (with 195 mm tires) that I use mostly for road trips. Road tax is pending next year and I also have troubles with ground clearance/mileage on road trips. My priorities are as follows:
1. Good ground clearance
2. Decent mileage on highways
3. Low cost of maintenance

Budget - lower the better.
I was considering the i20 active diesel and also the diesel Brezza and Creta and want to buy it used. I have never owned a diesel car before. Any pointers/suggestions on my next purchase please?

You might try a used Ecosport or Duster - especially the Ecosport will tick all your checkboxes above.
