If there ever was a 'Hair-Dresser's Car' or a 'Chick's Car', it has got to be the San Storm. That puny, 1.2 liter 60 horsepower, Renault motor never really got it anywhere quickly and the quality of plastics and the body is frankly, quite appalling!

Vectra, Astra or the Corsa? None of the Opel's sold in India were for the enthusiast.

Unfortunately, most of the affordable new cars on sale today are rather boring (Related thread).

I'm going to present a list of cars you can buy for 6 lakh rupees (or less), that will *guaranteed* make for a satisfying ownership experience. Each of these will bring a smile to your face (guaranteed again ) in their own special way. Each time that you go out for a drive!

What's more, if you want to enhance the driving experience, most of the below mentioned cars are modification friendly too. As long as you find a clean car, you can't go wrong with any of them. In fact, this could well be the best 6 lakh rupees you've spent in a long time.
  • Prices as seen in Mumbai. While Delhi may be in the whereabouts (or cheaper), rates down South will surely be higher
  • Highly recommended read : How to buy a used car in India
  • In all probability, you will end up using an after-market specialist for your service & repair needs. Keep a good one ready
  • Don't stop short of customising; Recommended section read

Searching a Lancer!
Can someone direct me to a good mechanic who can do the inspection of the vehicle in Hyderabad? He can come with me to the seller OR I can bring the car to him for the checkup.
Or should I consider talking to the mechanics at authorized SS, but I dont know anyone.
Thanks

Vibhanshu, take it to the authorised service center. They'll charge you a small fee, but its well worth it.

Used driver's car within 2 lakhs?

Hi guys,
This is first official post in Tbhp other than the introduction post.
I am trying to help a friend of mine as well as trying to understand the used market well to buy a new car soon (maybe in the next 6 months). My friend wants to pick up a car with the following limitations

  • ·Needs to be Petrol – to ensure that he does not need to have high maintenance
  • ·Should be powerful and fun to drive
  • ·Monthly usage would be about 500kms
  • ·Bachelor so not much use of the back seat or a huge boot
  • ·Would be used for highway driving as well once in a month
  • ·F.E is not that important, though it’s a consideration as well
  • ·Handling and safety would be more important
Based on the above limitations, I suggested him to go for a Palio 1.6 GTX (thanks for the various reviews in Tbhp). I did put across a disclaimer that it would be a tough find if you do get one. He has been searching ever since (1 month now) and hasn’t been able to find any decent car. He did come across a Palio 1.6 which was a LPG version which he is not too sure about.
Now for the questions, which I need assistance with
  1. Is my suggestion correct? What other cars would you recommend
  2. How worthwhile is it to pick up a LPG Palio? Any change in performance since Petrol has not been used for a while.
  3. In addition to the other checks mentioned in “buying a car” section, is there anything else that he should be checking in the car (Palio specific check)?
  4. Since he is buying from a different state, what charges would he have to incur other than the registration charges.

Jaiswal, you are on the right track. Within a 2 lakh budget, it's either a Ford Ikon, Mitsubishi Lancer or a Palio 1.6 GTX for him. Note that 50 - 75K more could also get him a petrol Mondeo. For all the other questions, please search (been answered several times on the forum).
