I was expecting "M" (which is december). Seems the VIN code has been changed in TATA. If any one has the information on latest TATA VIN encodoing, please clarify.
Few fellow BHPians also got this kind of number and looks like its all December 2011 make.

Re: ARTICLE: Find your car's date of manufacture (VIN)

Guys,

Need some urgent help. According to this thread, for Chevy the 7th letter is the month and the 10th letter is the year.

Ive booked a Cruze LTZ and in the PDI (this morning) I found the VIN was MA6JFDADCBHXXXXXX.

Now if I go by this thread the 7th letter is A, which is January, and the 10th letter is B, which is 2011. Chevy is claiming that for them the 9th letter is year, not 10th. The 9th letter is C, which means 2012.

Can someone confirm Chevy's claim that the 9th letter is year and not 10th?

Update: Chevrolet Vins Re-deciphered.

Guys,

Wildon and I managed to get a conclusion on the Chevy VINs based on some research I did by speaking to a couple of Chevy dealers. It's NOT the 10th letter that denotes the year of manufacture, it's the NINTH. 10th denotes the model year.

So all Chevrolet owners who've booked post February 2011, this is for you:

Typical Chevrolet VIN (mine): MA6JFDADCBH-xxxxxx
  • Chars 1-3: Manufacturer Code (MA6)
  • Char 7: Month of Manufacturing (in my case A = January)
  • Char 9: Year of Manufacturing (in my case C = 2012)
  • Char 10: Model Year (in my case B = 2011)
  • Char 11: Manufacturing Plant Location (H = Halol)

Thanks for your help, Wildon.

Here is the Report of your car:
Thank You Very Much Wildon, but saw the car in the stockyard today. It was with the standard Music System which comes in POLO.

Dealer had promised that the 2012 Model POLO would be coming with RCD 310 Music System of the New Vento + Few other features.

So I am going for 2011 Model (which is having VW Discount + Corporate Discount), VIN will be given to me tomorrow.

Thanks Again.

Re: ARTICLE: Find your car's date of manufacture (VIN)

Hi Wildon,

I have a query regarding the following:
VIN vs Chassis # vs Engine #.
Are they all the same or are they different?

I have been allotted a Ford Figo with the following VIN: MAJ1XXMRJ1CB41123. This was embossed on the chassis below the drivers seat. Thanks again for decoding it a couple of day back When I did the PDI, there is a very clear number on the Engine Block which is different: 12020221XXXXX which is engraved twice into the metal of the Engine Block and the Engine Head.

The Ford Sales guy says that the Chassis # and Engine # are ALL SAME as the VIN. Is this correct? A thought: if one wanted to, then one can change the Engine to some other one and the car's VIN / Chassis # would be the same but there would be a different # on the engine.

Also, when taking insurance the company ask's for the Chassis No and the Engine No separately. What should one do? Put the VIN in the Chassis No form and the different Engine # as I have mentioned above OR put the VIN for both the Chassis AND Engine No.

Requesting clarity.
Many thanks in advance for the clarification.

It cannot be same for all. In VIN v/s Chassis Its almost like same but there will a difference ( Again its varies from manufacturer to Manufacturer).

For e.g.

Hyundai VIN : MALAN51CLCMXXXXXX

Hyundai Chassis No: MALAN51CLCMXXXXXX*XX ( Change marked in BOLD letters)

Hyundai Engine No: G4LACMXXXXXX
