ARTICLE: Find your car's date of manufacture (VIN)

Hi Guys.
My friend booked a Swift VDI sometime back and dealer has now confmred the vehicle was ready for delivery. The VIN is MA3FHEB1S00168056.
This however is 16 digits as against Wildon's 22 character eg. he has used. Can this be decoded. Wildon can you please help.
Since my friend wanted to delay the delivery due to auspicious day, we were little apprehensive if dealer would give this to somebody else.

month = 11th 1=Jan,A=Oct,C=dec
confirmed "unofficially" by service adviser

From the face of it, and as I read your guidance earlier, the month seems to be December, however the year seems to be 2012! Actually, that's the confusion.

After going through the few samples available with me and inputs from W.A.G.7, ms001 and various Nissan owners here is the conclusion .

10th Character = Year i.e A=2010, B=2011 , C=2012
11th Character = Month 1= Jan, 2= Feb, 3= March, 4= April, 5= May, 6= June, 7= July, 8= August, 9= September, A= October, B= November, C= December.

So your's will be July 2011 Manufactured Vehicle. Please do have a check with the RC book and find the details included in that for confirmation.

But at that stage there was not enough samples to confirm so couldn't made it to this thread.

Could you please tell me which digits should I be looking at in the 17 digit VIN to get these info? I have asked for 2012 manufactured car and hence do not want to repent later in case I am fooled.

I am confused. I am taking delivery of a new VW Jetta and i noted down the VIN. If i go by the instructions on the first page, the date of manufacture is Nov 2012! How is that possible? The 4th letter is "L" and the 10th letter is "C". Any help would be great.
